RIP, Big Breakfast

in Eating out, Takeaway

I made a startling discovery yesterday (startling to me, anyway!). McDonald’s no longer serves the Big Breakfast. That era is now over, and all I have are my photos and memories (geez, so dramatic!).

Yeah… no more Big Breakfast served in that environmentally unfriendly styrofoam packaging. No more soft, bland scrambled eggs served with that spicy, rubbery sausage (the perfect accompaniment to bland eggs!) and an ultra-crispy, salty hash brown along with the spongey toasted English muffin, which I liked to eat with strawberry jam.

The Hungry Jack’s Aussie Brekky is really good, but you get fried eggs, not scrambled eggs. There was something I really liked about those Big Breakfast scrambled eggs. I’m still not sure why I liked them so much – I mean, you could pick them up in one piece most of the time! *sigh*

I asked the girl who served me how long it’s been since they stopped serving Big Breakfasts, and she said it’s been about a month. Apparently they weren’t selling as many as they used to, and the decision was made to drop them from the breakfast menu. She told me that ever since they stopped selling the Big Breakfast they’ve been driven crazy by people constantly asking for it. I suppose that’s always what happens. Heh.

And so for my breakfast yesterday morning I ordered a Sausage and Egg McMuffin Value Meal, with a Berri Apple Juice instead of coffee. It was yummy, but just so not a Big Breakfast!

Well, now I will never have a reason to go to Macca’s ever again. The Big Breakfast was the only thing I ate from there, once every few months or so. Mind you the last few times I went to Maccas I swore I wouldnt bother to go again, as the service has been horrifically bad. (Keeping you waiting in line for ten minutes before taking your order. Then taking your order and letting you wait another ten minutes before telling you they’ve run out of hash browns. Then, when you get the food it’s lukewarm and the egg runs down your shirt…) Yes I need my head read ;)

CW, is that your *local* McDonald’s? We used to have terrible service from that particular store when we lived round that way. I even wrote a complaint letter, but they never replied.

Chubbypanda,
Jac and I may be going to see the Fast Food Nation movie soon. I’ve read the book and I’m keen to see what they’ve done with it in the movie format. I’ve already warned her I’ll probably feel like eating McDonald’s right afterwards (just as I did right after watching Supersize Me! Terrible, eh? :))

Well i must admit i was shocked to learn that HJ’s does a breakfast menu. Although i’ve avoided HJ’s for quite a while (about four months), i’m quite sure they haven’t started a brekkie menu since then. :)

The brekkie wrap looks yummo. I love wraps of all types: KFC (Twister), Red Rooster (Flayva), Subway and even my homemade ones. Maybe i’ll take a trip to Perth so as to sample one of these treats. :)

BTW, the upper right shot of the ‘old’ Big Breakfast looks rather epochal don’t you think? With the sun shining on the eggs and hash brown with just a hint on the muffin and the sausage patty hidden in the darkness (where it should be). Just perfect.

Haz, if you do try out HJ’s breakfast, I’ll be eager to know what you reckon. Jac really loves those brekkie wraps – she always has one of them if we have HJs brekkie. Interesting – according to the HJ’s site, the breakfast menu is only available in QLD, NT and WA. I guess we’re the lucky guinea pigs, for once!

Epochal? I can see what you’re getting at with the placement of light/shadow on the items. But rather than a chorus of angels trilling I can visualise a big God foot stomping over the top of it :) *sigh* Looks like I will have to travel overseas if ever I want to have one again.

Just thought you should know… the scrambled eggs from McDonald’s Big Breakfast was literally two eggs, a couple of squirts of ‘plastic butter’ (as we used to call it. Pretty much just yellow oil), put into the ’scrambler’ which was a plastic square with an aluminium rod through the centre (with a couple of bends in it), for twenty seconds, and flipped onto the plate.

I haven’t eaten egg since I worked at mcDonalds.

Went to McDonalds for breakfast last Sunday after dropping mum at the airport at 4am… I too lamented the disappearance of the big breakfast. I normally have hotcakes or a sausage mcmuffin but I really felt like some eggs… and I was sad that it was gone, even though I hadn’t had it in like 10 years now!

So, I had a bacon and egg Mcmuffin instead– I usually never get it but like I said, I really felt like eggs. And I was pretty surprised by how tasty it was. The bacon was beautifully crisp and tasty. I tried to mimick it at home yesterday using english muffins and a little round to make the egg the right shape and everything… but it just wasn’t as good! How weird is that?

Mcdonald’s HAD a Big Breakfast?? I don’t remember that at
all! This post shows why I love your blog ( and go back to it every
time to feel hungry). It’s very unpretentious – you blog about
food, regardless of where it’s from. It could be from room service
from a 5-star hotel, to a fast-food chain – or it could be just a
hearty home cooked meal. While some bloggers only blog about fine
dining (foie gras, anyone?), I love coming to this blog for its
variety. It’s all about the love of food.

Oh no! I’m so SO sorry for your loss! Where i live we still have big breakfasts! They are wrongly delicious, and I was treated to one for my birthday :L

I discovered your blog looking for the price of the big breakfast and i think “the food phonographer” is a genius name.

I’ll definitely be visiting again soon.

Milly.
