Another week's food

What do you do with leftover hamburger buns? Jac made them into garlic bread, with butter, fresh parsley and of course, lots and lots of garlic. The burger buns were a little sweet for garlic bread, but still pretty tasty. Of course, being mashed up with large chunks of garlic nullified the anti-stinkifying properties of the parsley. Not that I ever chew on fresh parsley anyway.

During the week I had yet another lunch of char kway teow at uni. I bought it takeaway because I thought I might not be able to finish the whole thing, but it was so good once I started eating, well, let’s just say I was terribly full and felt like a nap afterwards. And a couple of hours later I had a red bean paste pao. And a handful of pepitas. I’ve been snacking on pepitas during the day when I inevitably get peckish between meals. I figure they are much better for me than say, a curry puff, samosa or chicken shishkebab.

Sometimes, Jac doesn’t feel like cooking, and as I’m more of an eater than a cooker, this is what happens (selected food from the week, obviously not the only meals we had)…

This is the BBQ meat lovers pizza we think gave Jac food poisoning. She thought the cold meats on it (pepperoni, ham) smelled a little funny when she ate it. A little while after eating her pizza, Jac’s body decided it must be purged. Poor thing, she felt crook for the rest of the day.

This was a Bacon Double Cheeseburger Jac ate during the week. She added our smoky BBQ sauce to it to enhance the flavour.

This was a Filet-O-Fish I had this week – for reasons unknown, I had been craving one. It was soooooo good. I love the tartare sauce in it. I usually find tartare sauces too sweet, but surprisingly, the tartare McDonald’s uses has never tasted that way to me. I just love the cushiony, soft, chewy steamed bun too.

Will we ever get good McDonald’s fries? These were well and truly gone before they were scooped up for us, I think. Floppy and sad.

I was also craving Chicken McNuggets with sweet and sour sauce. I always think of my brother when I have McNuggets with sweet and sour sauce, because he loved that when we were kids. I must ask him if he still does.

On Thursday night, Jac picked up some Japanese for dinner. She had a large pork katsu, with fried onions and eggy sauce on rice…

…and I had a large chicken teriyaki on rice.

We shared a large salad, which was sitting in loads of dressing as well as being topped with a dollop of mayo. The carrot was grated and kind of mushy i.e. eeeww. But everything else was really lovely in the dressing and mayo.

Our meals each came with miso in a cup – I don’t like miso, and so Jac got mine.

We went to a barbecue last night with some old friends, people I used to work with around 7 years ago. I didn’t feel like explaining the food blogging thing, especially to non-internet-savvy-only-use-computer-at-work-because-I-have-to people (who are perfectly nice people, don’t get me wrong!), so I didn’t take the camera out of my bag – I ate incognito. Steak, sausages (with loads of tomato sauce), garden salad, coleslaw, tinned pineapple chunks and a bread roll with real butter – not salt-reduced. Yum. The only butter we consume in our house is used in cooking rather than as a spread, and usually it’s salt-reduced, so when I do get the full hit of thickly spread real non-salt-reduced butter, it’s just sooooooo gooooood.

Today will be a day of cleaning and getting organised – my younger sister and her boyfriend will be coming over tomorrow for lunch (I anticipate yummy photos coming!) and a walkthrough of the house/looking after the cats – they will be house/cat-sitting for us when we go to Geraldton for a week’s holiday very soon.

I’m so sorry Jac got ill after eating the pizza. I hope she’s okay now.

I’m really feeling the Bacon Double Cheeseburger. It looks very scrumptious!

I don’t know about mushy carrots in the large salad but I reckon it looks pretty good.

Imaroller,
Yeah, she’s ok. She wasn’t too good after throwing up and had to crash for a while but the cats and I looked after her really well. :)

The chicken in that Teriyaki Chicken looks fried. Is that normal for Australia?

Chubbypanda,
I don’t exactly know how they cook it but yeah, that’s often how teriyaki chicken looks when we eat it at places around Perth.

Mmmm….McDonald’s….my husband and I were having a serious craving on Saturday so we drove out to McD’s around 10 p.m. for a fix. We both got Big Macs and shared a small fry (our fries were also limp and old) and it really hit the spot. I was going to take pics but we were so hungry and didn’t want the food to get cold.

I love nuggets with sweet & sour sauce. :)

That Japanese food looks fantastic! Pork katsu with that sauce…yum! I wish they had that kind of food in my neck of the woods.

Sarah,
So many people I know, when I mention how crappy and cold our McDonald’s fries tend to be these days all complain of the same problem. I would rather wait longer for fresher, tastier fries than be served quickly with fries that are ready to go but have been sitting there for a while.

The Japanese place also does a dish Jac likes called oyako-don which is chicken cooked with onions and that same egg sauce, served over rice. I like the egg sauces too, but teriyaki remains my favourite.
