Jac and I met up with C, E and Em for dinner at Taurus Hawker Foods (Shop 10, 113 Collins Rd Willetton) on Wednesday night. I was a little worried that it would be too busy and we would have to wait to get a table, but the timing was perfect and we took over a recently vacated table as soon as we arrived.
She, Em and Jac had cendol.
I also had chicken rice. Something I love about Taurus is that when you order chicken rice, they ask if you want the leg or breast. Of course, I always have the leg. The chicken rice came with the standard bowl of chicken soup too (sorry, no photo). Can you believe this is the “small” size? The dishes come in large too, and they are gargantuan!
Em ordered the see hum char kway teow (char kway teow with cockles). I’ve never liked see hum – when I was a child I found their salty smell to be rather like blood, a very offputting bloody smell. As a result, I still won’t eat see hum.
E had loh mee – I should really have taken a photo once she’d stirred it up and revealed the noodles lurking beneath. Like this, it looks like a glistening black swamp or tar pit!
We ate and talked and laughed and had a great time. Em and E bought some takeaway for later. It was a shame it was a week night and we had to go home to bed! If I didn’t have to get up so early the next day, that chicken rice (and more chicken rice!) would’ve fuelled more conversation and laughter!

We went back to Taurus again tonight for dinner. I had hor fun, and the other 3 (Em, Pri and Pri’s friend) had laksa.
Shared a plate of char kway teow.
And EVERYONE bought takeaway this time. Lunch for the first half of the week is sorted!
C,
Hahahaha, good one!
Oooooo, chicken rice! And thats a SMALL?!?! Wow, try the large sometime, I’m curious to see how big it is ^_~.
Ahh..squid tentacles, my fav! Just have to wait until I can drive, then I can get them myself =D.
C forgot to mention we went to Taurus for my last lunch in Perth. I had laksa with see hum added, and we shared a poh piah. C had mee pok dry.
I miss Taurus!
Also, I definitely put on weight from Perth – eep! Was nice seeing you and Jac!
Kagenosuke,
The large is huge. You’d have to be absolutely starving to get through that mound of rice.
E,
Hahaha, would you believe C texted me and told me about your return to Taurus? :) She didn’t say what you ate though. Yum. Putting on weight from your holiday just means it was a good one. :)
Hi TFP, wow! I absolutely love Hainanese Chicken Rice. Ask my partner and he will tell you how I have to try it at any new place that I see selling it. Unfortunately most of the time I’m disappointed. Such a pity that Taurus Hawker food does not seem easy to get to by public transport or I’ll be there in a flash ! The next time when I’m in Perth and I’m provided with a car to use, I’ll head there immediately. If you head to Sydney again you should try the chicken rice at Istana Restaurant in Thornleigh or if you are in Melbourne head to Malaya Inn in Doncaster. In my opinion they are the best for their cities respectively. Yummy !
James,
I’m going to have to plan more eating holidays over east pretty soon, as I’ve had so many great restaurant recommendations I’m really hanging to check them out! Taurus definitely isn’t as convenient to reach via public transport but I do hope you’ll get a chance to check it out some day. I always have a terrible time choosing what I want as there are so many great dishes on offer. It’s always very busy, both for dining in and takeaways. A warning about Taurus’ chicken rice – only get the large size if you are absolutely starving or have a humungous appetite! Even I have trouble working my way through the entire plate! :)
