Happiness drips with maple syrup

in Eating out

I had to work on Saturday this weekend just gone, which was a bummer. But since I had to be out and about anyway, I decided to get to Subiaco a little earlier and grab brunch at Tastings Coffee House – pancakes with banana and maple syrup.

For AU$9.90 I wasn’t sure what to expect. When my pancakes were placed before me I know my eyes must’ve lit up – the dish was colourful and looked simply gorgeous. And yes, I’d ordered another of those $5 freshly squeezed OJs as well*

Pancakes with banana and maple syrup and a glass of freshly squeezed OJ

A four pancake-stack, layered with sliced fresh banana, drizzled generously with maple syrup. All around the plate were squiggles of berry coulis and more dribbles of maple syrup. And just to make the dish look even more appetitising and colourful, the pancakes were topped with a garnish consisting of a strawberry, kiwi fruit and more banana. It was just beautiful.

Pancakes with banana and maple syrup

As I took the photo below, the maple syrup was literally dripping down the side of the pancake stack. It was seriously to die for. Oh. My. God. I could smell the syrup and feel the warmth gently rising from the pancakes. All I wanted to do was dig in and taste them, but I forced myself to concentrate on taking the photos first.

Pancakes with banana and maple syrup - side view

You know, not to toot my trumpet, but once in a while I do take photos that I myself fall in love with. I find that I can’t stop myself looking at them… in this case, I’ve been gazing at these photos and greedily reliving that lusciously dripping maple syrup and that warm, sweet pancake smell. Personally, I think it’s more about the food looking amazing to begin with than the photos themselves, though! :)

I really REALLY enjoyed the pancakes – I mopped up the pool of maple syrup and most of the berry coulis with the pancakes. It was a very sweet and sticky breakfast, but utterly utterly delicious. Even just cutting through the four layered pancake stack was a pleasure. The photo below depicts the pancake stack with my first and rather large mouthful neatly carved out. Subsequent mouthfuls were a little less gluttonous, as I took my time to really savour the experience. I definitely “live to eat” – I’m sure a lot of you guys do too! I don’t think food blogs would be as appealing or appeal at all, otherwise.

Pancakes with banana and maple syrup - after the first bite

Tastings Coffee House is located at 108 Rokeby Road in Subiaco. Breakfast is served from 6AM to noon. All pancakes come served with maple syrup, and you can have them with banana, berries or just the syrup. You can order bacon on the side too, if that’s what you’d like – ordinarily I would’ve done exactly that, but I was in a banana place on Saturday! And if pancakes aren’t your thing, Tastings serve the usual breakfast fare – bacon and eggs, scrambled eggs on toast, fruit salad, etc. If you stick around for lunch, there are sandwiches, burgers and other delicious items on offer. The homemade pizza in the warmer looks amazing.

*Jetgirl, I’ve been thinking more about your recent comment about my $5 glass of OJ. I reckon back when the film Pulp Fiction was made, $5 (American or Australian dollars) would have been expensive for a milkshake or juice, but it’s pretty normal these days. :) I’d only be happy to pay $5 for freshly squeezed juice though, not a glass of juice poured straight from a bottle.

Wow, what a beautiful stack of pancakes! I can almost smell them from my computer screen. I think I might have to go make myself some pancakes soon. Your photos always capture the essence of the food so well :)
(I definitely live to eat, too!)

Why don’t I have amazing food like that where I live? So unfair.

Those pancakes just look heavenly. ^_^ I had banana walnut pancakes with honey instead of syrup one morning… it was delish!

This blog is a very very very bad place to be at during the hour immediately preceding lunch….I mean this in a good way, of course…

Yeah I know what you mean, price of everything is going up like crazy. Back when that movie was made gas was like 95 cents a gallon here, now its 3 bucks. So now it would be a 15 dollar shake/orange juice. ^_^

I’m not much of a sweet-tooth, but those look so, so good! I reckon it’s possibly coz they look so pretty. All the stacks of pancake and banana and maple syrup and berry coulis. And with the kiwi and strawberry garnish! It’s making me so hungry for some right now.

I’m amazed at your self-discipline – taking so many photos before digging in… I don’t think could have been half so restrained! They look superb.

Mmm… that does look delicious… renews my energy for our current daily task of emptying sap buckets.

See, I’m exhausting myself daily in pursuit of that very golden liquid you talk about… Maple Syrup, the holy grail of sweet edibles.

That’s enough. Must rest and restore my energy for more making of the syrup.

First time reader: found you through Scott’s Abode. I make pancakes for my boys every Saturday, but now I’m seriously embarrassed at my lack of presentation. I just plonk them on a plate.

Tomorrow I’m going to garnish. At least a little. They won’t know what hit them.

The pancakes just look so yummy, will have to drag the man out for brekkie there one day.

I wonder if that Elvis impersonator still hangs out at the place (used to work in Subi and see him around all the time)

beth,
:) Welcome to you and your cousin! I hope the photos will continue the mouth-watering trend.

M.M.,
Hope you’ve managed to have some pancakes!

Clover,
Maple syrup is my favourite accompaniment for pancakes and waffles, but I do like honey too.

dynagrrl,
:-D Hope you get to feed that pancake craving soon! Every time I look at these photos I feel like having some more!

michelle @ TNS,
Well, if money were no object and the opportunity were available, I’d say “absolutely!” LOL. If only I could apply that to my life! I’d be flying all over the world to sample the foods I’ve read about on food blogs.

Bitsy,
I do feel pleased when I hear that! To me, that is success (sorry)! :)

Jetgirl,
Hah. I think my tolerance for higher prices has also risen as I’m earning more money now than ever before – having been a poor student for many years, I’m now really enjoying being able to afford being more “generous” with my expenditure.

dea,
I’m much more of a savoury person too, but for dishes like this I always can make an exception. Pancakes and waffles I can’t say no to!

yuyu,
Thanks for commenting! Glad you’ve enjoyed this post.

aforkfulofspaghetti,
Only when taking photos for the blog can I hold back on my gluttony!

Jac,
It was great. And ever since I showed Chad the photos, she’s been bugging her boyfriend to go and have pancakes there with her. :)

michelle,
I hope you got to have some pancakes! At a cafe or at home, doesn’t matter! I prefer eating pancakes out in many respects – no need to make the pancakes, no dishes or pans to wash up.

Colleen,
I read your maple syrup post with great interest. A maple syrup festival sounds fantastic! If we ever make it to Canada we may just have to make our trip coincide with that event! Do you sell your maple syrup?

Frogdancer,
LOL. I guess the fancy presentation is part of what you’re paying for when you eat out! I’m sure your boys don’t even think about that aspect when you serve your pancakes up!

jean,
I did see a bloke with an Elvis-like haircut lurking about. But it may not have been the same guy you’re talking about.

cellobella,
Hahahaha, wanna have breaky again together sometime? :-P

Bryan,
Oh yeah. That’s exactly what I thought when the dish was brought to my table.

Thanks for checking out my post. :)

We do in deed sell our syrup. Hopefully the large majority of it will be bought on the festival weekend and the rest will go first-come first serve.

Please do come by if you visit Canada. We love our visitors!

Colleen,
I’d definitely love to visit! Just have to make a trip to Canada happen. I know Jac has been keen to go for sometime.

The Home Cook,
I’m really pleased with how the photos turned out. That cafe has really good lighting for photos. Such a shame I probably won’t eat there again, now that I’ll be working in a different suburb.
