On Monday evening, we went to our friend M’s for a barbecue dinner. M told us not to bring anything – as M and her son L are both vegetarians, we went along knowing the meal would probably be vego. I know most people think of me as a complete carnivore who is anti-vegetable, but I really do enjoy good vegetarian food on the occasions that I eat it. As we arrived, M was hard at work making tofu satays and vegetable kebabs. It all looked really good and I couldn’t wait.
The kebabs were great! Baby corn, green capsicum, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and chunks of haloumi. The only time I’d eaten haloumi previously it had been unpalatably salty and had completely turned me off haloumi. I was a little hesitant to try it again, but I’m so glad I did – this haloumi was just the right degree of salty and deliciously savoury, and L did a really good job cooking the barbie – the golden brown crusty barbecued edges of the haloumi were fantastic.
M had made a chunky peanut butter sauce for the satay.Yes, I know this wasn’t authentic satay/satay sauce, but the sauce was absolutely beautiful with the tofu and I’d happily and eagerly eat it again any time.
We also had vegetarian sausages and buttered fresh bread rolls. We ate outdoors on the wooden deck. My favourite part of the meal was the haloumi. Got to eat more barbecued or grilled haloumi.

I love halloumi! We eat it all the time with fried eggs instead of bacon! It’s absolutely amazing!!! I haven’t ever tried it on the bbq, but we are definitely going to make kebabs! What a great idea!
those kebabs look fantastic! i think i’ll make them for dinner tomorrow. did M brush them with anything before bbqing (olive oil/lemon juice) or is it as simple and easy as it sounds?
I love haloumi! It has such a delicious, squeaky feel and I like the saltiness of it. I’ve had it on vegie BBQ kebabs like this too and they are yummy!
dynagrrl,
Mmmm, haloumi and eggs sounds great! Will mention that to Jac.
Perthie,
I don’t recall, but I’ll check with M on that one. Brushing with olive oil/lemon juice sounds like a great idea anyway!
Guera,
Yep. I wish I’d had these sooner!
What a great spread for a barbecue, and are you sure that satay wasn’t real chicken? :-)
The tofu satay looks amazing! I am not a huge fan of cheese so the haloumi doesn’t quite appeal to me, but I do like veggie kebabs with eggplant, mushroom, onion, capsicum and zucchini on it!
Kenny,
Heheheh. Nope, definitely was tofu! But it was really good though. I wasn’t at all disappointed it wasn’t chicken. :)
dea,
Oh yes, I love eggplant, mushroom, onion and zucchini. I think if I were to ever make vegie kebabs I’d need extra long skewers so I could fit everything I wanted on the kebabs.
Whoa! Grilled cheese! That’s an awesome idea! That tofu satay looks fantastic! I just woke up and I’m kinda hungry, so this post is making me drool all over the place xP.
Kagenosuke,
What’s great about haloumi is that it holds its shape when you grill it – it doesn’t go all soft and melty and collapse into a cheesy mess. Hope you get to try some grilled haloumi and tofu satay some time soon.
