Hard-boiled egg makes woman squeal (Wednesday bento)

July 30, 2008

in Bento, Home cooking

The hard-boiled egg molds (they are called “Easy Boiled Egg Shapers“) I ordered arrived last week. As you can see, I got four different ones – car, fish, bunny and bear.

My new hard-boiled egg molds - Easy Boiled Egg Shapers

How to use Easy Boiled-Egg Shapers:

  1. Hard-boil your egg.
  2. Peel the egg while it is still hot.
  3. Place the egg in the mold.
  4. Leave the egg in the mold in cold water for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Voila!

If you’re interested, you can buy these cute egg molds at J-Box:

Fish and car Easy Boiled Egg Shapers

I have to confess, I literally squealed with excitement and joy when I opened the mold up and saw this plump bunny face looking back at me.

Bunny hard-boiled egg mold - it works!

Jac was pleased to see how thrilled I was, but she said she’d rather not eat a hard-boiled egg that had a face! Heh. I guess I’ll keep bear and bunny for me and give her car. Not sure how she will feel about fish. :)

She didn’t need lunch on Wednesday as she had the day off and was planning to go shopping and grab a bite while she was out, so I just had to organise a bento lunch for myself.

So this is what I had- leftover beer battered chips (some of you may think this is gross or weird, but I love eating them cold!), mushroom, blanched sugar snap peas, hard-boiled egg, soy sauce (notice the bunny theme? :-P), sour gherkin pickles, baby cos and cherry tomatoes. I was a little paranoid about my egg “unbunnying” itself, so I’d left it in the egg shaper in the fridge overnight.

From my bento - bunny hard-boiled egg and other goodies

I packed my matching yellow chopsticks this time, as I’d need them. I ate the entire lunch cold. I always put my bento in the fridge as soon as I get to work, but I then take it out twenty minutes or so before and let it de-fridge a little before eating. I really enjoyed this meal. The noodles were a little slippery for those wee plastic chopsticks, but I managed. :)

OMG! The bunny is SOOOOO CUTE! I absolutely LOVE it. I’ve seen those things before in other bento sites and on Flickr but I don’t know why I find it extremely cute here. Must be the bunny themed bento! I would totally eat that, face or no face. I think the bunny is the cutest of all the egg molds.

hey tfp!!

i think you really caught on the bento vibe. it’s quite a trend for modern moms here in S’pore too. used to make my own ones to work and school (save money and i hate canteen craps) but they are definitely not as exciting as yours. the egg moulds are darn cute!=)

btw… i’ll melt if a person makes me bento everyday with love. lucky jac! =)

Although, maybe my kids would eat boiled eggs today had I those when they were little…

I got no problem eating stuff with a face (hello, fish head curry!), but i think i just like the traditional hard boiled egg shape too much – nice smooth egginess – for shaping it differently. Might affect enjoyment ya know, eating a weirdly shaped egg ;)

Having said that, your egg shapers are really cool!

sormuijai,
From what I have observed, these are pretty popular, especially amongst bento lovers. I just had to jump on the bandwagon. :)

Peky,
Yeah good point – an egg that looks like a rabbit sounds so wrong somehow! :) It is a pretty cool gadget.

Lydia,
I will, don’t you worry!

Hannah,
Thanks – glad you enjoy it, hope you keep enjoying it! So what’s this online group that you’re a member of? I’m just curious. I hope the next post will meet your expectations!

bella,
I saw them on other people’s bento blogs and knew I had to try them for myself.

dea,
Heheheh. Yeah, out of the four, the bunny’s my favourite (which is why I tried it out first).

Hi katherine!
When I get into something, I really throw myself into it! :) Yeah, I’ve really been bitten by the bento bug. Heheheh.

arundathi,
Heheheh. I can see it would be really appealing for kids. Jac wants to use the molds for hard-boiled eggs the next time she packs a picnic for her niece and nephew.

Bryan,
Heheheheh. That’s a funny sight to imagine.

pam,
LOL, hope you do! It was really fun using them and eating the egg.

mooiness,
I suppose because I boil the eggs the night before I actually plan to eat the eggs, there’s no rush on my part, so it’s easy enough to go through the molding process.

Cellobella,
Heheh. I didn’t think I could love boiled eggs more than I did before, but adding cuteness has made them even better!

G,
I reckon so too!

C,
I think they’ll be lots of fun to use. I also love the smooth natural egg shape. I’ll have both “natural” hard-boiled eggs and molded ones… I like a bit of variety.

daphne,
It sure would!

I really enjoyed your bento box posts and I’m totally in love with the animal sauce bottles and the food picks. The egg moulds :-) I have looked at them repeatedly as they are simply to cute for words. Bryan’s comment was hilarious. I kept laughing along with you during the video and your enthusiasm and happiness at your purchase was so infectious! hehehe I’m going out to get a Bento box for Hazel this weekend. Thanks for sharing and the comments from your readers were great. I think most of us were jumping up and down in excitement, squealing away at the cuteness. E.

joanh,
Yeah, they probably would! You’re luckier than me if that’s the case; over here in Perth, Western Australia I have to buy all my bento stuff online.

I recently bought a tovolo ice cream sandwich maker set that can also be used for this. All you need are a few rubber bands and you’re ready to go. I got the farm set that has a chicken, pig and cow. Love it!

Love the egg moulds – very funky idea.

I also like eating leftovers cold, I thought it was just me as I often get funny looks.

I’ve commented on this before – the moulds are still so cute.

But I’ve just had an idea.

Firstly it’s the year of the rabbit, so you have an excuse to use the bunny more often, but also since you like soy sauce on your egg, you could get a dropper or a tiny brush, and paint in the bunny’s eyes, nose, mouth and ear indents with soy sauce. That would look cool, and probably freak Jac out even more! ;-)

Craig,
Yes, you are right, I SHOULD use the bunny more often in the year of the rabbit! Jac will be OK with that as long as I don’t make her any bunny-eggs. :)
