Monday bento – chai tow kway, oyster sauce vegetables with cocktail wieners, fruit

24 November 2008

In addition to my takeaway yong tow foo, I bought a serve of chai tow kway (also known as radish cake, or carrot cake – see Wikipedia entry on chai tow kway) from Fook Kee at Spencer Village. I thought it would be perfect for a bento lunch. To go with the chai ...

A trip to Spencer's

22 November 2008

Last Sunday I caught the train to Thornlie and to have lunch at my favourite food hall, Spencer Village (Spencer Road Shopping Centre, Thornlie) . As I walked across the bridge from the railway station, I could hear talking behind me. I turned around and saw two old Chinese women, two poh pohs, walking ...

Friday night curry

21 November 2008

Another dish I tend to cook when Jac’s away is green curry chicken. I cooked this last Friday night for my dinner, using green curry paste from a jar (I used Valcom brand curry paste, which is made in Thailand), coconut milk, a little sugar and fish sauce (as per the instructions on the ...

Lunch at Mai's Vietnamese Restaurant

20 November 2008

Last Friday was a shocker of a day, and J and I escaped from the office and had lunch at Mai’s Vietnamese Restaurant (51 Bennett St, East Perth). We were very lucky and scored the very last free table – everything else was taken or reserved.

We shared a serve of pork spring rolls. They ...

Thursday bento – fried rice and salad

20 November 2008

Thursday’s bento lunch consisted of fried rice and salad (cos lettuce, rocket, spinach, cherry and golden tomatoes, and baby carrot sticks). I love this bento box as it was my first proper bento box, but it is on the small side. I realise that’s good for portion control, but I could’ve easily eaten twice ...

Another version of fried rice with SPAM

20 November 2008

For dinner last Wednesday night I made fried rice with SPAM, green beans, corn kernels, onion, garlic, egg and oyster sauce – that’s probably my favourite combination of fried rice ingredients. I cooked enough for a decent feed and for bento the next day.

Tuesday bento – sandwiches

18 November 2008

I made sandwiches for my Tuesday bento lunch – three fairly normal sandwiches, and one experimental one (starting from the top, you won’t have any trouble spotting the experimental one! :))

Curried egg and sliced cucumber
Honey leg ham, swiss cheese and english spinach with wholegrain mustard and mayonnaise
Curried egg, cucumber and strawberry jam (yep, you read ...

Baking muffins on a Monday night

18 November 2008

I really felt like baking mini banana muffins on Monday night, so that’s exactly what I did. The recipe I use is Banana Muffins II from Allrecipes. I couldn’t find my old printout of the recipe, so I googled it to get another copy. I’d just weighed out the flour for sifting ...

Monday bento – chicken dish, stir-fried lettuce, rice, tomatoes and fruit

18 November 2008

For my bento lunch last Monday I packed myself leftover rice and my latest chicken dish with no name from my dinner the night before. I also quickly stir-fried myself some cos lettuce with garlic and soy sauce. I’ve always love stir-fried lettuce – Jac’s not keen on it as the lettuce does ...
