Jac's Wednesday bento – sausages and salad

December 3, 2008

in Bento

The note I drew/wrote for Jac’s bento last Wednesday said it all…

Jac's bento note - Welcome home!

I didn’t need lunch, as we were going out to lunch to farewell our workmate L, who is moving on to a new job. For Jac, I packed sliced chicken sausage, salad (mixed greens, our homegrown cherry tomatoes, blanched snow peas and green beans), bread and butter, a pack of mini sesame snaps and Babybel cream cheese. In the “tasty” container is smokey barbecue sauce to go with the sausages. The bread is “Four Seed Loaf” from Woolworths, made with linseed, kibbled soybeans, canola, and kibbled wheat. I find this bread too seedy and grainy, and too savoury in flavour to eat with my favourite sweet spreads like strawberry jam, or kaya, but Jac loves this bread – we buy it for her, rather than for “us”. We often buy separate bread products for her and for me – I like multigrain bread, plain bagels, fruit loaf; she likes four seed loaf and many other large heavy-duty seedy, grainy breads which I find too bitsy and savoury. :) Are there particular foods that you buy when you go grocery shopping, but only you eat, or only your partner eats?

hehe pretty much all/any vegetables I buy (excluding frozen) are all for me as my husband is “allergic”, I sometimes hide/mash them in certain meals so he doesn’t know he is getting nutrition! such a child.

Definately…

I prefer multigrain or light rye bread and Blake gets white (although I love white but trying so hard to be good!!)

We used to get chocolate icecream for him and vanilla for me… but now we get the one with choc, vanilla and strawberry yum :)

Oh I get skim milk, he gets full cream

And if he has been good.. he gets a box of fruit loops (he is 25 but still loves these hehe :)

Yay!!! the return or the cute notes!

Oh, there’s a few things we buy together, but for one of us only, like minced meats, and soft cheeses.

I finally found mini sesame snaps in the local organic shop (couldn’t find it anywhere previously) and they were so good! I like the the coconut variation one, have you tasted that before? :)

i buy separate breads as well, husband likes the dark grainy breads while i cant get over how dry they are. as well he likes breads with milk in them, i have to hunt for a white loaf that doesn’t have it.

other than that, i get spaghetti for myself all the time, husband hates it to death and its my favorite food so i make it when he works late or whatever

I buy broccoli for only me – no one else in the house will eat it….. and beef jerky! I love knowing my snacks are safe from others!

What a great question. We always go through the weekly shopping almost on autopilot, not realizing that there are certain items that only one of us consumes.

We always buy fresh orange juice for my love as I will never pour myself or order in a restaurant a glass of juice. But it makes him SO happy and completes his day :)

Me and my boyfriend eat totally different foods so most of the stuff I buy is for only 1 of us. For example, I LOVE broccoli but he won’t touch the stuff and he puts Ketchup on EVERYTHING and I don’t like it at all! I think the only food we both eat salsa! (Condiments count right?)

Strangely enough, it’s meat!

Hubs is a vegetarian, so we eat veg at home – once in a while, I’ll steam some fish for myself if he’s eating a fake meat product, which I don’t care for.

Whenever we go out to eat, 9 times out of 10 I’ll choose a fairly meaty dish to get my fix!

hell yes and i really really hate it. i’m the only one at home eating SPAM, ruffles chips and enoki mushroom. very sickening because i will be stuck with a bag of chips or a tin of SPAM for at least 1 or more week and i hate to eat food that i can’t finish fast =(

Well hubby has a sweet tooth and mine is salty. That covers a lot of stuff, but the thing that sticks out the most in my mind is his stash of Mike and Ikes and Cherry Twizzler Nibs in the nightstand. :-D

My boyfriend doesn’t really eat Asian food, which makes me really sad. But I think I’m slowly getting him to like it – he had a piece of my takeaway spicy tuna roll a little while ago and thought it was really good ;D

I do most of the grocery shopping in our household and your question has made me realise how much of what we buy is just for me! That might be because I make my breakfast and lunch to take to work, and he’ll buy it (unless he keeps bread or English muffins at work to toast).

We usually agree on what to have for dinner and he’ll eat most of the salad items I buy except for cucumber, sugar snap peas, broccoli and cherry tomatoes. His salads at dinner are usually just spinach leaves, mushrooms and capsicum (which is not enough for me, I need more).

The mini Calippos and lemonade icy poles in the freezer are usually consumed just by me. I used to buy the Weight Watchers mini icecreams but have stopped eating those (ice cream doesn’t seem to sit well with me anymore), and he is slowly getting through the stock in our freezer!

We each have our favourite chocolates/biscuits/snacks that we buy ourselves whenever the mood strikes.

I’m a definite eggaholic and I absolutely must eat them everyday for breakfast, scrambled and drowning in ketchup. My boyfriend was never really an egg guy until I introduced him to the pleasure of eating a toasted fried egg and cheese sammie haha! The look on his face as the yolk burst and dribbled down his chin was utterly priceless. “Whoa! What the…? Oh wow, mmmmmm! Can I have another one babe?”

Then there’s rice cakes. my boyfriend won’t touch ‘em, but I love all the different flavours they come in, and they’re perfect for nibbling when a sweet or salty craving strikes. I looooooove the caramel chocolate chip and cheddar varieties from Quaker.

Fantastic responses, guys!

Hi Leigh,
Welcome, and I’m glad you like the blog!

Ranee,
Jac used to think she had to hide vegetables in our meals, but I never have a problem eating them as long as the protein part of the meal is good. :)

Linda,
I like white bread too, but I figure since it is so bad for us I’ll be happy to stick with multigrain. Oh, I love that ice cream (we call it neapolitan ice cream)! But generally speaking we don’t buy ice cream at all. I love Froot Loops too and eat them straight out of the box just as they are – but haven’t eaten Froot Loops since I was a teenager.

Jaz,
Heheh. I knew you guys were hanging out for more notes. Jac buys all sorts of cheeses – she loves cheese, especially stinky cheese. I’m boring with cheese – I like tasty cheddar and swiss. I’ll eat other not-too-stinky cheeses, but don’t actively buy much cheese.

Lydia,
No, I haven’t tried the coconut one (don’t think I’ve ever noticed it!). I must check it out. I love the little snaps for a quick snack.

jetgirl,
Yeah, Jac hasn’t been eating SPAM for sometime, so I save cooking SPAM meals for when she’s gone out or gone on a trip.

Tiphphinne,
Jac loves beef jerky and will occasionally buy it for herself. She knows it’s safe from me, as I can’t stand the stuff. :)

Denisse,
We both drink the same fruit juices at home – apart from tomato juice and cranberry juice; Jac buys those just for herself.

Cookie,
Of course condiments count! :) Jac loves horseradish cream, which I don’t care for. She loves slathering tartare sauce on her fish when we get fish and chips; I eat the fish without sauce but eat lots of tomato sauce with my chips. The only time I eat tartare is when I order fish in a restaurant and the dish happens to come with tartare.

Carly,
It would be tricky if Jac were vegetarian, I think! But then maybe I’d be motivated to cook for myself more often. I don’t mind vegetarian meals, but don’t really like the fake meat products. Jac likes the vegetarian mince and vegetarian sausages, but I’m not so fond of the texture of fake meat products.

katherine,
I’ve frozen SPAM before when I couldn’t get through a whole tin. I do eat chips a bit at a time (that, and chocolate), but that’s just me trying to portion-control my intake of bad foods. :) Jac is disgusted that it takes me over a week to finish a chocolate bar as I just nibble a little off each time.

Michaele,
Heheheh. I think Jac and I are both salty toothed, but she craves desserts after a good savoury meal more than me… though I think my sweet tooth has grown a little over the years we’ve together. I don’t like to eat in bed, but Jac likes to munch on crisps or chocolate in bed. Last night she munched on Reeses Peanut Butter Cups in bed. :)

Steph,
I’m lucky that Jac loves Asian food, and now cooks it even better than me! :) Certain things she is still not so fond of though – like durian. :D

Beauty,
Yes, that is correct. Koala’s look like bears but are not bears at all. :)

Thanks Amy, will check your blog out.

Lauren,
We usually talk about what to have for dinner, but often Jac will just decide during the day and pick up any required ingredients on her way home from work. When I get home, it’s usually to delicious smells from the kitchen, as she’ll be cooking up a storm. I’m like you – I need more in my salads, otherwise they just don’t satisfy. :)

Jenny,
Jac definitely has an affair with cheese! LOL. She often eats cheese on toast, welsh rarebit etc. She loves nothing more than cheese and crackers with pickles and cold meats… I have to be in the mood. :)

Mana,
We both love eggs, but I think I eat them more often than Jac. One way I eat them that she doesn’t is broken into my Maggi two-minute noodles, all gooey and soft. But we both love scrambled, fried, boiled… oh but another difference in our egg eating is I rarely eat poached eggs when we have breakfast (I always choose fried or scrambled)- but that’s Jac’s favourite way to eat eggs. We don’t mind rice cakes, but don’t buy them often. I like corn cakes too – I’m a big fan of corn.

dea,
I don’t mind yoghurt, but Jac loves it and buys and eats it regularly. She’ll cook with it too – I never bother. :)

Oh my goodness, everything! Boyfriend will not eat sauce, cheese, vegetables, pasta, pizza, where does the list end!

Reply

22 Kali December 5, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Oh, yes! I prefer the simpler grained breads myself, but the fiance’ is all about finding the ones that, well, yes, there are better, but they don’t taste like anything one would want for a sandwich!

But also to be fair, I am an American Southerner and I heart pimento cheese while he gets grossed out about it!

Of course, he’s Canadian and I pretty much think they’ll eat everything.

My other half doesn’t like Okra and Orange juice with pulp. But when we go shopping we buy orange juice without pulp. Coz I can live without pulp :P

24 Holly December 6, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I think the main thing for me and hubby is tea and coffee. I can’t live without my tea and he can’t manage his day without a coffee to kickstart his morning. Apart from that, I’m slowly getting him to enjoy veggies. :) Yay!

Kissy,
Ooh-er! What does he like to eat? :)

Kali,
I don’t mind the grainy/seedy breads if I’m making a savoury sandwich, but lately I’ve been eating sweet spreads with bread, like jam, and those savoury breads take over the sweet flavour I’m craving. I can’t say I’ve ever eaten pimento cheese – Jac would probably like it as she’s into cheese. :)

Mathew,
Neither Jac nor I like okra. She likes fresh juice with pulpy bits in it. I like fresh juice as long as it doesn’t have too many chunky frothy bits in it. When we use the electric juicer, I give her my froth and pulp after I’ve drunk the rest of my juice. :)

Holly,
Jac drinks the occasional coffee, but we both drink tea or Ecco, which makes things easy. She’s been enjoying a teaspoon of honey in her tea, while I have no sweetener at all, but I like honey on a toasted bagel, so we both enjoy the honey.

Hi Lovely Foodie!

There are many many things I buy that my picky partner does not eat! I happened to live with a lovely looking man with exceptionally persnickity food tastes. While I love eggs, am fond of mayo, and think ground turkey breast is delish, my love is repulsed by all three. He will only eat an egg he says “if it’s in a brownie”….Little does he know! ;-)

Hi Alise,
What grosses him out about eggs? Is it a texture or smell thing? I can totally understand if it’s a smell thing – I love eggs, but don’t like the eggy smell of meringue. Ground turkey breast is an interesting one… the only meats I’m not into are offal, which Jac loves. Give her organs any time and she’s in heaven. The only organ I like to eat is skin. :)

28 Alise December 16, 2008 at 11:30 pm

He says and I quote, “that eggs smell farty.” haha I know horrible. As far as offal, goes I’m with you sister, absolutely no thank you….but crispy skin is delish!

Reply

29 The Food Pornographer December 20, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Alise,
Hahahaha, they do smell farty sometimes. When you boil them, for example. But there’s no farty in scrambled eggs! :)

This is a great question and one that really got me thinking… I live with my sister and 1 year old nephew and there are definitely some things that go into our trolley that only one of us eats noteably:
Me only – Hot hungarian salami, green curry paste, pappadams, canned tuna, Burger Rings, blue cheese, tom yum soup paste, enoki mushrooms, greek natural yoghurt, chilli, ginger, stone fruits of any kind, fish and tomatoes.
Sister only – broccoli, frozen green peas, instant macaroni & cheese, neenish tarts.
