Dinner at Sapporo

in Eating out

We had recently had dinner at Sapporo (186 Rutland Avenue, Carlisle). We’ve eaten at this tiny restaurant run by a little old couple (he cooks, she serves) many times now. It’s simple, homestyle delicious cooking.

We ordered prawn dumplings, called “shu mai” on the menu. They came with a big blob of wasabi and a dish of soy sauce for dipping. The dumplings were filled with minced prawn meat and smelled too fishy for me. I just had one, and left the rest to Jac.

I had my current favourite dish from Sapporo, the chicken and vegetable stir-fry, with a large serve of rice. There was even a little zucchini in there this time. Jac ate some of my stir-fry too. The stir-fry sauce is so deliciously, irresistibly, intoxicatingly* drinkable – Jac usually finishes eating before me and sits and watches as I drink every last drop of sauce down. :)

Jac ordered the sashimi plate, with tuna, salmon and mackerel (we think). She really enjoyed this, and polished it all off. She knows when she orders sashimi it’s 100% all hers – I’ve never liked the taste nor the texture of raw fish.

I didn’t write the prices down, but it all came to AU$35.00. This was a really good dinner – delicious and satisfying without being too heavy.

*Not in the getting drunk sense. As in – not me getting drunk. The sauce was getting drunk though… by me. :)

Funny, I hadn’t thought before about how you don’t like sushi. You have such similar tastes to me in everything else I choose to eat out – noodle and rice dishes, mostly Asian food of one kind or another, fried things :P – but no sushi. Blasphemy! ;)

I don’t know which I would jump on faster though, the fish or your stir fry. Yum.

Hi TFP,
Siew Mai with wasabi? That’s new! Must try!
I can’t help but notice that the plate was too big for the 6 siew mais don’t you think? It made it look so sparse!

Wonderful, mouth watering looking meal! Is there anything better than raw fish in hot weather?

Melissa,
I don’t mind sushi but do not like sashimi. Most of the time I want a hot meal, which is why I don’t choose sushi. A hot meal is so much more satisfying to me, somehow.

tunadip,
I suppose as they are dumplings made in a Japanese restaurant, they served them with wasabi. I didn’t think about the sparseness of the presentation, to be honest. I was too busy diggng into my stir-fry at the time. :)

Stylopath,
Jac would say “cold meat and salad”. That’s her favourite meal for hot weather. Sashimi will probably be somewhere near the top of her list too.

sashimi does require a developed taste, as I myself won’t eat it when I was little. Now, I really
love it, espiecially raw salmon being my favourite. I’m not too keen on the mackerel.

Hi, we stopped at Sapporo yesterday (Sunday) afternoon to look at what times it was open. Unfortunately it only seems to open mon-sat 11:30am – 2:30pm, quite unusual that it’s only open 3 hours per day. My husband is Japanese and he was quite miffed that they are not open any other times because he has to work during the day. I’d like to go there and try it some time though… :) I was surprised to find your review!! We didn’t know if it was just a take-away but thanks to your review we can see it’s a restaurant. As an aside, I grew up in the area of Carlisle and as a child that shop used to be a deli.
