I’m sure my friend C won’t be offended that I’ve called this post “breakfast of gluttons”! We know what we are, after all! :-D
We met up at Ba Ba Black (Shop 25, 60 Royal St – Cnr Plain St, next to The Royal pub) to start our day with a hearty feed.
C had one of her favourites – Ba Ba Benedict, a spectacular tower of toasted bread, spinach, smoked salmon, perfectly poached eggs all yellow and gooey-yolked in the middle, topped with a big blob of thick hollandaise sauce.
I ordered scrambled eggs on two thick slices of toast, with a side of bacon and a homemade potato cake. The bacon, eggs and toast hit the spot, but that potato cake was the worst $4.00 I’ve spent in a long, long time. It was dry, tasteless and burnt on the bottom – very disappointing. I do love Ba Ba Black’s scrambled eggs – they always give you a generous serve of perfectly scrambled, deliciously creamy soft eggs. It’s almost intimidating when that huge plate of food is placed in front of you, but C and I usually leave empty plates.
C sent me a text message later that day: “Still really full from breakfast. Declined free food, as even my greed has been conquered by that hollandaise.”
Heheheheh.
PS. thanks to those of you who’ve expressed concern regarding the fires in Victoria – as I mentioned at the end of my macaroni stir-fry bento post, please don’t worry, Jac and I and our families and friends are all safe. Jac and I live in Western Australia, on the other side of the country. Jac is currently in New South Wales with friends but is fine – we talk on the phone every night, and she’s nowhere near fires at this time.

I havea lot of difficultywith getting otu for breakfasts – I don’t like eggs! *wrinkles up nose*
These both look so good!
I am so glad you don’t have anyone near the fires, sadly I do and I feel so helpless being so far away, but they are ok at the moment.
Heh. I didn’t actually eat anything until lunch the next day. That’s how much hollandaise they gave me this time!
I’m sorry. I didn’t see that post till just now. I’m glad all is ok. I hope your friend will be fine too!
Both breakfasts look really delicious. Too bad about the potato cake, though. I hate disappointing food experiences. Everytime I see a post of yours with bacon, I wish we had bacon like that here in the United States. Well, maybe we do but I haven’t seen it. The ones I’m used to are a lot fattier.
Hi TFP
I’ve been lurking around your site for a while and thought it was time to comment. That breakfast, wow! Looks totally yummy. I could have that now for dinner! I love hollandaise sauce!
Just wanted to say what a great site you have. It’s changed the way I eat lunch and for the better. Thanks for sharing with us!
Cheers
Emma
Fiona,
I can’t imagine not liking eggs. But do you eat dishes with egg in them? Like custard, or cake?
Nikki,
That’s good that they are ok.
C,
Wow! That’s a serious glutton-slayin’. :)
No worries, Nicole, don’t be sorry! :) Our friend is doing ok. She is at the start of treatment for early stage cancer so we are all feeling quite positive at the moment.
Cindy,
This bacon was very good – a perfect balance of meat and fat. I hate it when bacon is too fatty, but I also don’t care for totally lean bacon. I need that band of fat there for flavour. :)
I have yet to eat good poached eggs, want to because those pictures look yummy.
Glad to hear your loved ones are well, especially Jac. So sorry to hear about the devastation.
I want the Ba Ba Benedict. Wow.
breakfast post! I love your breakfast posts, they motivate me to get my lazy butt up and cook a good meal in the morning. Sorry about that potato cake…sounds disappointing
Hi! i was just wondering whether the spinach was blanched or raw? Thanks!
kissy,
I like poached eggs, but usually choose scrambled for breakfast if I have the choice. My most memorable poached egg dish in recent years was this amazing meatball dish from the now defunct Marrakech restaurant, topped with a perfect poached egg.
Melissa,
Besides the cereal-type breakfasts including oats and muesli, the other breakfast item I can always say no to is eggs benedict – just because I don’t care for hollandaise. :)
Kagenosuke,
Oh yeah, that potato cake was nasty. I know now to stick to the standard items like bacon, eggs and toast – they do those very well.
zafirah,
I will have to ask C, or perhaps she will see your question and answer it. :)
hi TFP
Am new to world of blogs/ commenting. Was it rude of me to admit to viewing your site without making comments? Just wondering.
Still drooling over those eggs…..
OMG – I could drink hollandaise sauce… that is the thickest and most amazing I have ever seen… drooling here in the snow and rain…
Oh man! I love Eggs Benedict, and I love smoked salmon. That Ba Ba Benedict looks like it’d be a worth a trip to Perth – just for that breakfast!
emma,
Not at all. Most of my readers never leave any comments. :)
Bryan,
I’ve never liked hollandaise, so I’d leave you to drink it on your own. I’m glad it isn’t snowing or raining over here, but I would love it to be colder. I’m already tired of the summer heat. :)
Rhonda,
Oh well, next time you have to come up for work, maybe you can check it out. :)
