Bento – SPAM fried rice, salad and grapes

February 23, 2009

in Bento, Home cooking

After my SPAM and egg and baked beans and corn with rice dinner, I cooked up a batch of fried rice for my next day’s bento lunch.

I fried up cubes of SPAM until they had crispy edges, and added chopped green beans and garlic to the SPAM in the wok. I threw the corn and rice into the wok next, then oyster sauce for flavour. Last of all, I broke an egg into the mixture and stirred it through until cooked. I love this dish – it’s simple to cook and very tasty hot or cold, perfect for a lunch box or picnic.

I made myself a small salad of lettuce, snow peas, mushrooms and the largest baby roma tomatoes I’ve seen in a long time. I also packed myself seedless red grapes and a pack of mini sesame snaps.

Fried rice, salad and fruit bento

Packing bento lunches the night before is a real time saver. Of course, certain things are much better made fresh in the morning, like sandwiches.

A bit of a hiccup with Jac’s homecoming. She’s not going to be home tonight. I’ll tell you more about it soon (don’t worry, everything is OK).

http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2008/04/tutorial-how-to-make-hawaiian-spam-musubi-sushi.html

my brother made them for the first time 2 weeks ago, they’re sooooo good, and by last saturday we came back for more! don’t worry about the musubi-maker, we just used a normal sushi roller mat thingy.

oh man now i’m craving spam musubi again :(

I LOVE SPAM. Have you tried Spam with bacon? I don’t mean a meal with a serving of Spam and a serving of bacon, but Spam that actually already HAS bacon WITH IT (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/jauderho/3118469081/). I have a can sitting on my kitchen counter and haven’t cracked it open yet. I’m afraid the world will implode when I take a bite of what’s sure to be an amazing piece of Spam.

Sorry I’m a little obsessed. Your awesome blog brought out my Spam obsession.

You know what? With spam chopped so small, it almost looks like normal ham – almost enough for me to try it!

…almost. :P

I love your photography and that keeps me coming back to your blog. Plus your refreshing honesty.

The clincher is that you make so many home-cooked meals just like my mum used to make, spam and egg with baked beans and rice, followed by fried rice and spam! I mean to most people that would be just weird, but to me, that is pure comfort food. You can take the gal out of Malaysia…lol

I’m sorry to read about all the c@@p that people post on your site. They are losers. Keep posting and keep your head up high!

Aw, sorry Jac didn’t come home as expected. I was just coming over here to see if you were happy to see her, darn it. But at least you said everything’s okay. :)

I would totally eat SPAM, but would have to have it in fried rice in little bits first, I think. Then maybe I could move up to eating a whole piece of it.

nat,
I’ve heard about SPAM musubi (a few readers have told me about it) but I’ve never tried it. I want to, though! I just haven’t been in the mood to have a sushi-making session at home, even though we have the stuff in the pantry (sushi rice, nori, sushi rolling maps, seasonings for the rice, wasabi etc).

Thanks, Jhangora. Glad you’ve enjoyed it.

Jeanny,
I think I’ll always cook and eat my simple comfort dishes. Sometimes after a bad day, all I need to start feeling better is a bowl of Maggi mee with a lovely soft egg in it… Mmmmm.

Beauty,
Yeah, looks great, doesn’t it? I hope I will get the time (and motivation) to try making it myself one of these days, since I don’t know of any Japanese cafes that sell SPAM musubi here in Perth.

thechiconomist.celine,
Oooooooh! SPAM with bacon! We don’t have that here, but I would definitely try it!

Katie,
I reckon everyone should try it at least once. And if you don’t like it, at least you know that from experience. Too many of my friends have this SPAM hate thing going on but have never ever tried it.

Thanks, Gigi. Glad you enjoy the blog.
To be honest, the crap from some people is tiresome, but I think it also provides very interesting reading! Not that I’m encouraging people to be nasty just for the entertainment value. :)

Melissa,
Yes, she is fine. She’s been getting back into the kitchen this weekend – she has really missed it! Lots of yummy smells in the air. I hope you’ll give SPAM a go sometime. :)
