Scrambled eggs on multigrain toast and the foods we miss

March 22, 2009

in Eating out, Reflections

Looks like my old trick of starting a post about something and finishing with something else!

Jac had an appointment with the doctor one morning recently and decided she’d have breakfast with me before dropping me off at work. We went to Ba Ba Black (Shop 25, 60 Royal St, East Perth – next to The Royal pub). She wanted a simple, light breakfast and just had Vegemite on toast. No photo, I’m afraid – she got stuck into it before I even had a chance to switch on the camera. Another time, perhaps!

I felt like a fairly simple breakfast too – so I ordered scrambled eggs on toast. I really like Ba Ba Black’s toast – the bread is nice and thick, and it’s still quite chewy. Regular readers will know very well that I prefer chewy toast to crispy, brittle or crumbly toast. My scrambled eggs were more well done than previously – see the photos from my first breakfast at Ba Ba Black for a comparison. These scrambled eggs reminded me of McDonald’s Big Breakfast scrambled eggs, which I still miss dearly – see these old posts: RIP, McDonald’s Big Breakfast and Soft, rubbery, crispy, spongey… delicious. I don’t think I’ll ever get over the demise of the McDonald’s Big Breakfast, or the dark meat McNuggets! Over the years, I got very good at picking the dark meat McNuggets out of the batch without needing to bite into them first. It was usually a race between my brother and me to get the dark meat ones first. He loved eating them with lashings of sweet and sour dipping sauce.

Scrambled eggs on multigrain toast

And while we’re reminiscing, I discovered Once Upon a Win: Epic wins from we were kids this weekend – I spent a good while reading all the posts. So many memories! Sticking with the food theme, who remembers these?
Warheads – I wasn’t into these, but they were all the rage when I was in school.
Planters Cheez Balls – so moreish!

Besides the Big Breakfast and dark meat McNuggets, I miss the sweeter, non-sesame seeded, round-topped but mostly squarish buns you used to get at KFC in a Dinner Box (two pieces of chicken, potato and gravy and a bun). And up until a number of years ago, I thought Space Food Sticks weren’t available any more – until my sister Juji told me you can still buy them from Woolworths! I don’t eat them very often, but I really like them. Something else I miss, not because it’s not available any more, but because I don’t buy it any more as it’s just loaded in sugar – Kelloggs Frosties. I love Frosties! I love how the milk that’s left at the bottom of the bowl has been sweetened by all the sugar frosting from the cornflakes. I don’t buy these any more as I get terribly TERRIBLY addicted to them – haven’t eaten them for maybe 15 or so years! As you can see, the things I miss are all junk food-related or not particularly nutritious! If I think of any more, I’ll add to my list.

So here’s today’s discussion topic: what food item(s) do you really miss?

A&W Root Beer float! And A&W ice cream waffles. I used to eat them after school with my classmates while we talked all afternoon. I grew up overseas in Asia during my primary school days, and it used to be so common. Now, almost every A&W outlet has closed down.

Those jaffa choc top biscuits (arnotts)and the chocolate liquorice, flat staps and twists (liquorice) that were on counters in delis. SO devasated when I discovered they no longer make these:-( I agree about the KFC bun too. Terrible!

Is it true that the guy behind the counter at Ba Ba Black is unpleasant and rude?

I was allways too scared of the warheads to ever try one. lol. we used to get the can of cheese balls all the time, they stank and were delicious at the same time, that strange staleness that the can gave to them was amazing.

this one is too easy for me, I miss pizza, cheese, milk chocolate, and ice cream when i became lactose intolerant at age 14 . the soy versions are just a tease but I eat them anyway. ^_^

I miss heaps of stuff, like Tarax Sars in the brown cans with the barrel on it (other brands just arent the same) and bbq Ruffles.. and ages ago at KFC they used to have a chicken patty thing with cheese & maybe ham in it. I don’t remember the ham but it makes sense to have both in there..

Poptarts. Strawberry danish flavour. Which has flaky latticed pastry and a little drizzle of white icing on top.

They got me through high school.

Though you can still buy pop tarts. Just not in Perth. (Well, not everywhere – and I am a fan of convenience!)

I miss Blue Raspberry Blow pops, frozen burritos, Slurpees, nachos – with cheese that comes from a can, twinkinks, Raspberry ice tea… and so many other things. I know most of them you can still buy in the states, alas I can’t get them here in the UK without paying an arm and a leg for some of them.

As for the buns from KFC you can make them at home pretty easy. They’re called Buttermilk biscuits …. They don’t serve them here at KFC either:(

A&W waffles, coney dogs, root beer.. i miss A&W because I grew up eating that as fast food and not the junk of which is Macdonalds and KFC. Since A&W pulled out of singapore years ago due to “poor sales” and “stiff competition” from other multi-national food conglomerates like macs, the only time i get to eat A&W is when i head up north to either KL or malacca. :(

Haha Juji, I miss the same thing for the exact reason! Only I devoured the apple flavour danish.

I’d eat them every morning, and dream about them all afternoon in class, just sitting in the cupboard at home, waiting for me. -sigh-

There’s a brand new strawberry milkshake flavour, I wonder if you can get them in Australia?

There exists a type of soda called “red cream soda” which tastes just like cream soda, but “red”. I don’t know how else to describe it, but if you’ve ever tasted it, that’s the best way. Anyway, it’s still available out west, but I haven’t been able to find it in VA or any neighboring areas. The last time I was in Utah, I bought an entire case to bring back. The kids and I enjoyed many red cream soda floats! It’s one of those things I took for granted as a child. It still reminds me of summer at my grandma’s house.

its gotta be my late grandma’s fried quail eggs. she just heat up a big pot of oil, break one quail egg into it and what comes out is a crispy, rich and extremely satisfying snack. i always dip those blobs of quail egg in honey or sprinkle some salt before eating.

grandma passed away before i turn 8. after more than 10 years i still remember every single part of it =)

I miss stuffed crust pizza! I haven’t had that since I was a kid! I don’t know if you’ve ever tried that though..but it’s AWESOME! Basically, it’s pizza but in the crust, they put a longgggg tube of mozzarella cheese through the crust. When it comes time to eat the crust, you get a goey/stringy/cheesy surprise! It was the best!

I miss “yumbo’s” from Hungry Jacks. A yumbo was a burger that conisited of many layers of ham and cheese. The cheese would melt and it was pure heaven.I don’t know why Hj’s stopped making them.

Michaels, I believe its Faygo red pop. It is quite delicious. I miss a lot of traditional chaldean foods. Stuffed dumplings in a yogurt sauce would be number 1.id eat the sauce like a soup, its the best part!

I miss Planter’s Cheez Balls too… I was actually just having a conversation about this in class and one of my classmates gave me the weirdest look, hehe.

@carmen Barq’s makes a version of red cream soda here in the states. I just don’t have access to it on the east coast. I don’t recall ever seeing anything called Faygo, but I’ll keep an eye out for it.

regan,
Can you believe I’ve never eaten a pop tart? I get the impression I’d find them too sweet. My sister Juji loves them.

sydneygirl,
Oh yes! I loved A&W root beer float and those round waffles too! These days I just get my root beer in a can at Spencer Village, but that’s it – no float, no frosty mug, and no A&W Bear. :)

emma,
So good to find someone else who understands about the KFC buns!

Aurelia,
There is a guy who has a harsh, loud voice, but I have not found him to be rude.

Linda,
Hope you managed to find the Space Food Sticks! The last time I saw them I only saw chocolate flavour though, no caramel.

jetgirl,
I shouldn’t eat dairy, but I do have some. I miss having Kraft Mac and Cheese from the blue box though – that is tasty stuff. But I get way gluggy from it, so I don’t eat it any more. So sad!

helen,
Really, they don’t make BBQ ruffles any more? :-O

Juji,
That should give you the motivation to travel over east more often! :-P

Tiphphinne,
I’m way too lazy to make buttermilk biscuits at home! :-P

zafirah,
A&W is one of my incentives for visiting Malaysia someday! I loved A&W as a kid.

Mana,
I just never got into pop tarts… funny how my younger sis loves them so much!

Michaele,
We can buy red creaming soda at any supermarket over here! My dad used to buy it all the time when we first came to Australia and I pretty much overdosed on it… which is why I don’t drink it any more!

katherine,
Fried quail eggs sound yummy. I have fond memories of my late grandma’s cooking. I think they’ll stay with me as long as I am alive.

Kagenosuke,
We can get stuffed crust pizza here, but I avoid it because it’s just too much cheese for me. I get way too gluggy from it! Having the normal cheese on the pizza is all I can take!

Carol S,
That is something you and Jac have in common. She has spoken fondly of Yumbos to me. I never ate one, but she loved them and misses them!

carmen,
I have never had stuffed dumplings in a yoghurt sauce, but it sounds interesting. I’d give it a go for sure.

Megan,
Heheheh. They were so moreish, weren’t they? Cheezels are nice, but not the same.

Linda,
They did re-release those for a while recently, but they’ve disappeared again. So frustrating!

Bitsy,
I used to like Chickadees. We have Mamee in supermarket now! I’ve seen packets for sale in Woolworths!

Ping,
I never ate much rojak. But I liked the smell of rojak paste.

When I was in Korea, I missed a few things…. Egg McMuffins (McD’s finally started serving breakfast in Korea in late 2007); grits; chicken pot pie (like a frozen meat pie, I guess); and places that serve breakfast 24/7 (such as Denny’s or IHOP).

Poptarts. I do buy them from the lolly stores, but they charge between $9 to $15 a box, and you can never get the plain strawberry ones. I lived on strawberry Poptarts during high school.

Kitta,
The Poptart phenomenon failed to capture my interest when they first appeared on the scene, I think because I didn’t really have a sweet tooth back then. Today might be a different story, so I am purposely staying away from them. ;)

Chik nix, Happy Snax, Pollywaffles, Chomp’s – no longer made in Australia…
My nana’s spaghetti bolognaise, roast lamb, roast potatoes, apple turnovers and late night vegemite sandwiches made with real butter – my nana is no longer alive…
Piroshki’s from Trader Joes in CA, BBQ brisket, pulled pork, Wendy’s burgers and traditional chewy ‘everything’ bagels – I no longer live in the USA
