Bacon and egg roll – and eating favourite bits last

April 16, 2009

in Reflections, Takeaway

A lightly toasted sesame seed knobby bun, filled with bacon, egg with a soft, gooey yolk, and tomato sauce.

Bacon and egg roll

Just look at the egg soaking into the bread, and the four layers of bacon!

Bacon and egg roll

A perfect mouthful.

Bacon and egg roll

I love buns that have a knob on top. I believe the proper name for these buns (well, according to what I see at bakeries) is “knot rolls”. I call them knobby buns because I think of the little bump on top as a knob. I like eating the knob best of all, and last of all.

When I was a kid, I always saved my favourite bits to eat last, so I could take my time, eat them on their own and really savour the tastes and/or textures that I loved so much. I did this with pieces of chicken especially. We’d typically have dinner consisting of a piece of chicken (or two, if they were particularly small pieces), some stir-fried vegetables and rice. I’d eat the rice with the vegetables and save the chicken to the end so I could eat it all by itself, tasting and enjoying it on its own without the flavour of anything else. I did the same with beloved dishes like minchee – the rice and vegies would be consumed first, and quite quickly – the minchee would be eaten slowly, at the end. :)

These days, when eating KFC, I take the skin off my chicken pieces and leave it all in a pile on the side of the plate to eat last, on its own. Do any of you guys do something similar with your favourite foods? Or do you do the opposite – dive straight in and devour your favourite bits first of all?

Time for bed – big day tomorrow, Jac’s brother’s wedding. I’m wearing a dress – eeek!

That sandwich looks delicious!

I also save the best for last (such as eating all of the crust around a sandwich first or peeling off all of the chicken skin and eating that at the end, which drove my parents insane). Someone once told me this means you have a lot of self-control, since you’re willing to delay this gratification.

The only problem with doing this is that my dad used to try to snap up the best bits still lying on my plate after he was done. My mother used to joke that at the end of the world, I wouldn’t stand a chance.

when i’m eating something especially delicious, i always make sure to leave a perfect last bite. so if i were eating an awesome egg and bacon sandwich, i’d eat around the corners first so that my last bite is one of yolky, bacony goodness. :)

i have always eaten the thing i like best last–my reasoning is to get the food i dislike out of the way first and savor what i enjoy.

actually i think this is my life philosophy.

have lots of fun at the wedding!

Hope you are enjoying your hols.
I do the opposite, I’m quite a slow eater and get full easily so I eat my favourite bit first in case it gets cold or I get full!

I’ve had the same habit since I was a kid, saving the best for last! Isn’t it an old saying that if a guy gives you his last bite of food, it’s true love? I guess it works both ways cuz if I give someone my last saved bite, I’d better be in love!

Wow what a sandwich! I love gooey yolks, especially with bread and bacon.
My boyfriend also saves the best bites for last. It looks quite funny when he’s eating something messy like a hamburger, because he will deliberately eat around what he thinks is the best bite.

Eeeeek! :) Have fun.

That sandwich looks like heaven. “Food at it’s porniest” indeed.

I always save bits of my favorite stuff for last. Definitely a carryover behavior from childhood.

And with fried chicken, how could you not eat the fried skin by itself?!

i tend to leave the best bits of my meal til last, but sometimes it can work against you if you get too full early on in the meal and then you cant enjoy them properly

I eat my favorite parts first. I don’t know if you have the Charlie Brown cartoon there or not. But once when I was little, Linus told Charlie Brown to always eat the frosting first in case there’s an earthquake or something so that way you know you didn’t miss anything.

I apply that philosophy to anything I’m eating, lol.

lol so she talked you into a dress huh? no fun! oh well at least you got to get away from everything for a bit.

I tend to save the good bits till the end as well. like with candy that comes in multiple flavors ill eat the gross yellow and orange ones first and save the strawberry and cherry ones for the end but that leaves the husband to believe that i dont like them and will steal them if i dont hurry >_

I usually start with the best parts and regret it afterwards. Except when I eat chicken but I still devour the skin first and then whish for more skin when it’s all gone. Also I always imagine an invisible orchestra playing a sad melody when all the skin is gone… yes I’m weird :D

Haha knobby bun, that’s great XD. I’ve only recently begun to like runny yolks, used to eat em solid as a rock. I’m never going back =D.

a dress…. double eeek!

I think your crazy – jk – I always eat my food in a systimatic way, one bite of each thing in order till it is gone… no saving the best for last… enjoy it the whole way through…

how did the dress go? :)

and to answer your question, i do like to leave my favourite bits for last! if i order seafood pasta for instance, i’ll eat the pasta and leave the seafood behind. and i tend to eat veggies first because i’d always rather eat protein than veggies (although i like veggies) so that i do get all that good stuff into my body!

Leigh,
Heheh, it’s good to know I’m not alone in that pleasure!

Lena,
My mum would always say, “Oh don’t you want your chicken skin?” (or whatever it was I had stockpiled on the plate) She knew very well what I was doing, she just liked to tease me. It probably is a sign of highly developed self-control… or perhaps masochism! :)

Jacqui,
Oh yes… I like to make sure the last mouthful is just perfect… and I chew it slowly, to savour the taste.

Thanks, leigh. I am just uploading photos from the wedding / holiday now – there are a lot of them! When I was a kid I always ate the “yucky” bits like the vegetables first, and saved the “best” bits like the chicken for last. Now I am older and vegetables aren’t necessarily “yucky”, I still save chicken to the end, as chicken is still the best!

carmen,
Oh yes – I love sausage! Sausage patties like in McMuffins, or sausages… mmmm.

kissy,
Thanks, we had a great time. Oh yes – that is absolutely an important consideration – I always make sure I will have enough room left to fully enjoy the last/best bits.

Cookie,
Luckily, true love in our household also means understanding your loved one’s need to leave favourite bits to the end!

Megan,
I always make sure to get a bit of everything in each bite when eating a burger (but of course I’ll save any bun knobs to the end!). It’s funny when we actually examine how we eat/enjoy food, I reckon.

Melissa,
My mum and I have always wished that you could just buy KFC Original recipe skin on its own, in addition to the usual chicken and other items. It would be great to be able to grab a Skin Pack to go with the usual assorted chicken pieces, chips, gravy and coleslaw.

milky,
It takes careful planning, and a good understanding of your own appetite/eating capacity. :)

Nicole,
I guess that philosophy is actually a very good one! Yes, we have Peanuts cartoons over here. I haven’t watched / read any in a long time, though.

Amanda,
Heheheh, good one!

jetgirl,
I’m lucky with lollies – Jac likes red ones best (usually raspberry) but I prefer green (usually lime), so we don’t have to compete for those.

Rudi,
Wouldn’t it be great if we could smell or eat off our screens sometimes?

Sven,
I’m weird too – I think about the soundtrack to certain moments too. the soundtrack or the narration.

Kagenosuke,
That’s excellent (or perhaps egg-cellent – too corny!)

Bryan,
No matter how we eat our food, as long as we enjoy it, that’s the main thing, right? :-)

dea,
The dress was fine. I’ve actually worn a dress to the last few weddings / semi-formal social events I’ve attended. It was tricky moving around to take photos on the wedding day, though – I was worried I would flash bum or bosom at people depending on the angle! :) Eventually I got into pool though, so spent the rest of the day in my board shorts and rashie.

I do exactly the same thing with KFC, and everything! Always have saved best till last, cant understand people who eat the nicest first.
I love the name of your blog, my friends are always saying that food is my porn lol.
