We had breakfast at the Cuckoo Chef cafe, Carousel Shopping Centre, on ANZAC Day morning.
Jac ordered the eggs benedict. The toasted Turkish bread, ham, poached eggs and spinach were smothered in thick, almost congealed-looking hollandaise sauce (see the creases in the sauce? Ewww, hollandaise skin!). The poached egg yolks weren’t as gooey as Jac would’ve liked, and she thought the hollandaise tasted like the commercially bought kind rather than made from scratch – it was okay overall, but I think I enjoyed my breakfast more than Jac enjoyed hers.
I had a hankering for a club sandwich. Not quite breakfast food, I know, but that’s the good thing about this cafe – you can order anything from the menu at any time. I was expecting the standard Australian flag toothpicks holding it all together, but it was nice to get cocktail umbrellas instead – more festive, don’t you reckon? :)
In the sandwich, there was roast chicken, bacon, lettuce, cucumber, tomato and what appeared to be Cajun mayonnaise. It was a very big, messy and ultimately satisfying bite. The bread was toasted quite hard, which made eating the sandwich even more messy (crumbs, crumbs, everywhere!). I cut my palate on a piece of bread that surprised me with its sharpness, but I did enjoy the sandwich. The chicken, bacon and mayo were the best bits. I like club sandwiches. I should eat more of them.
Bento lovers, I hear you! I promise, there are bento posts coming soon, complete with bento notes for Jac!

That’s too bad that Jac’s eggs didn’t turn out well–good eggs benedict are one of my favorites!
Your club sandwich looks fantastic though. I like how they used chunks of roast chicken instead of the standard slices.
The Hollandaise sauce looks like a big blob of melted processed cheese [the kind in burgers] due to those creases you pointed out!
I have fond memories of club sandwiches – I had one on my last day in New York City :D
Hi, just to say i love your site and even though im british (so dont eat much asian food)and vegaterian your pictures make me really hungry!
Eww, sauce with wrinkles! :P
That sandwich is mammoth! I can’t eat big sandwiches like that, because I have to use a knife and fork and for some reason Phill finds that embarrassing. My biggest sandwich fear is cutting my mouth on some bread. It actually happens more often than you’d think!
For a moment, I thought it was cheese on the poached eggs! Until you mentioned hollandaise…
That must have been a deliciously sloppy club sandwich… ;)
I love places that serve everything all day long cuz sometimes you just don’t want breakfast in the morning or you might want it at night. Customers shouldn’t have to limit their choices by the time of the day. Your sandwich looks huge and amazing!
The mini umbrellas turned your breakfast into a tropical cocktail-ish sandwich!! ;-)
Big breakfasts are always amazing, real indulgence!
I was away last week and had a fab breakfast, (in order) slice of black pudding, three slices of crispy bacon, another slice of black pudding, all topped with a poached egg. It was delicious, they poured over a creamy looking sauce which tasted amazing but I couldn’t work out what it was.
Megan,
Yes – the chunks of roast chicken were really tasty. They kept falling out of the sandwich, though. :)
Lucia,
Yeah, it does look like rubbery processed cheese, doesn’t it? Heheh.
Hi sophie301,
Thanks for commenting, and I’m always pleased to hear my pictures make people hungry!
Katie,
Tell me about it! I always cut the top of my mouth on sharp bread. Crusty bread rolls are the worst. I used to cut up my mouth like you wouldn’t believe whenever I ate a grilled chicken baguette from Hungry Jack’s. But of course, like a good glutton, it never put me off eating those baguettes.
Bangsar-bAbE,
It did look very cheesy! I think if it had been cheese, it would’ve been way too rich to eat! My sandwich was great – mayo leaking out the side, chicken pieces spilling out with each bite… very messy to eat.
Cookie,
Yes, I agree – and we often crave non-breakfast food at breakfast time – it’s so frustrating when you want a burger or something at 9am! :)
Denisse,
Hahaha, yeah! It was like a cocktail sandwich! Continuing on with the theme from our recent tropical holiday, of course.
kissy,
That sounds good – though I am not a big fan of black pudding. Three slices of bacon sounds fab!
