Sandwich bento

May 26, 2009

in Bento, Home cooking

If we happen to have fresh bread, salad and sandwich filling-type items in the fridge, I like to make sandwiches for our work lunches as I know Jac loves sandwiches. On this occasion, we had both wholemeal and multigrain bread*, so I used both breads. I poked animal picks into the sandwiches to help keep them together.

Sandwich bento for two

The sandwiches I made were (in the photo below, from left to right):

  • hard-boiled egg mashed with chopped spring onion, mayo and french mustard, and lettuce
  • seasoned roast pork, chutney, mayo and cucumber
  • honey ham, lettuce, mayo, wholegrain mustard.

And across the top:

  • roast turkey breast, avocado, raspberry jam and lettuce.

This is a close-up of roast turkey breast, avocado, raspberry jam and lettuce sandwich. I knew this one would be Jac’s favourite out of the lot.

So here’s the note I put into Jac’s Sandwich Keeper. I made the stars on the note multi-coloured to celebrate the return of the sandwich bento (and the little sandwich is all “yay!”) – it felt like it had been a long time since I made Jac sandwiches for lunch.

About the bento gear

*I prefer multigrain, Jac prefers wholemeal. Most times she’ll happily eat multigrain, but sometimes we’ll buy two loaves of bread – wholemeal for her and multigrain for me. I actually prefer white bread most of all, but we all know it’s not good for you, so I eat multigrain most of the time, and wholemeal sometimes.

Don't miss an update!

TFP, that is the best looking lunch EVER. Maybe it’s just my extremely grumbly tummy speaking (I went for a fair run earlier and haven’t really fed my tum yet!), but oh my gosh… I want those sandwiches. Please deliver to building x, room 118… :P

This is definitely going on my lunch inspiration list for next week!

The sandwich guy reminds me of the School House Rock videos we used to watch in school. :D

Yay i love bento! you may be surprised to hear that I have never had an egg sandwich! of any kind. I’ve never had egg in a sandwich but it sounds soooo delicious, i will definitely try it soon.

I agree with Jac though, the turkey sandwich looks so yummy, especially with the avocado which I wouldn’t normally think to add :)

I love egg salad sandwiches! Although mine only have mayo and sour cream since I don’t like green onions. I love your little notes. You’re such a good artist!

You’ve probably answered it before, but it looks like the sandwiches are cut into quarters, which’d only account for half a sandwich of each type. What happens to the other half-sandwiches? Breakfast of Champions? :)
(By the way, how embarassing, I failed the spam question the first time I did it! I’m saying it was a typo and sticking to that story!)

Beautiful sandwiches, as always. I like how you put so many different ingredients into each sandwich!
I like wholegrain bread better too… something about the textures of the individual seeds.

I really really love your bento posts, I think it’s kinda one of the reasons why I’ve been eating more sandwiches these days (I was surfing through your old bento entries a little while ago) =).
And the note is just …. awwww!

Like everyone else here, I love your sandwich bentos. The egg is my favorite. Well that, and your notes. I really should do that for Steve. I bet he’d be very pleasantly surprised.

This post has inspired me to make more sandwiches for work. Your combinations look lovely.
I love an ‘All Day Breakfast’ sandwich, sliced cooked sausage, cold crispy bacon, either sliced or mashed egg and sauce (ketchup is always good, this is so yummy but has to be eaten on rare occasions as its quite calorific!

If you ever decide to market lunch notes I’m totally buying them and putting them in my own lunch.

Linda,
Heheheh, glad you liked it!

erin,
It WOULD be nice to have gourmet sandwich delivery on campus. :)

jetgirl,
Obviously I never saw the videos, so I’ll have to take your word for it! :-P

Lucia,
You must try hard-boiled egg sandwiches. If you get the chance, let me know what you thought! I wouldn’t add the avocado if I was making the sandwich just for me – but I know Jac loves avocado in sandwiches. It did add an extra colour to the sandwich, which is good!

greenlady,
I try very hard to make them look good as I know they’ll be posted on the Internet for all your scrutiny afterwards! :-P

Thanks, Cookie. Mmmm, sour cream would be interesting. We only ever buy sour cream if Jac’s cooking a dish that specifically calls for it.

Thanks, leigh. Yep, it’s now back to the ordinary routine.

Daria,
I use eight slices of standard loaf bread to make four sandwiches, which I slice in half – so we get 4 different sandwiches each.

Megan,
If I’m making sandwiches for us I like to make them special so that 1) Jac will enjoy them 2) so they’re worth photographing and writing about on the blog and 3) so I’ll enjoy them too – I don’t really like very plain sandwiches – I like my sandwiches fancy!

No worries, Beauty. And there are more bento posts coming up. I hope you’ll like them.

Just Me,
Heehee, I thought so too!

Sorry about that, John. I guess some people have more trouble with it than others.

Hai-Ha,
I do like making sandwiches – as long as we have a good range of fillings, it’s very easy and relaxing making sandwiches early in the morning.

Bryan,
Jac likes avocado mashed and spread on toast, so it didn’t seem so strange to include it in a sandwich. What little character? It’s a speed cloud, to show the sandwich man is running. :)

Melissa,
Heheh. He would be surprised! It would be so cool if you did!

Stephy,
Yeh, time is a factor in the morning. I do have to get up very early to pack our lunches. :)

kissy,
That all day breakfast sandwich sounds fantastic! And yes – tomato sauce would top it all off beautifully!

Lisa,
You may have something there… stay tuned. :)
