We finally tried the box of Japanese golden curry mix I bought ages ago – this was the “medium” curry mix which, incidentally, tasted pretty mild :). Jac made chicken curry with it, with potatoes, onions and carrots. She didn’t crumb the chicken a la Japanese chicken katsu curry (see First taste of Japanese curry), she used boneless skinless thigh pieces – they turned out beautifully tender. Although it wasn’t spicy-hot, the curry flavour was just “wonderfully curry”! I liked this so much that I had the leftovers for breakfast the next morning. I love curry and rice for breakfast.

Ahhh! Japanese curry is one of my favourite things ever! Why am I looking at this, it’s 1.30pm and i haven’t eaten anything! Torture!
the ‘hot’ one is still pretty mild too. when i was in japan, i went to 100 yen shops and bought a lot of little japanese pre-made sauces, noodles etc. they were awesome.
theres a japanese shop down the road which carries a stack full of japanese groceries and best of all EVERYTHING has English labels.
I love ‘Golden Curry’ it’s my favorite Japanese curry brand. I agree it’s really not that spicy but has great flavor. I get the hot and always add a couple chopped up chill peppers to give the dish extra heat.
My favorite curry:
Veggie Curry (with big chunks of carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, and potato!) YUM!
That looks awesome love the japanese curry flavour, Katsu chicken curry is one of my favourite meals!! Yuki Japanese Restaurant on Collins Road makes a great katsu curry!
Sorry if you have mentioned it already but where did you buy the curry mix from? It would be great to actually try making it at home.
I love non-traditional breakfast food! I’ve only had Japanese curry once and LOVED it! Lucky you!
i LOVE curry! it looks delicious! did u just follow directions on the box?
Amycat,
Hope you got to eat something yummy not too long after reading the post! :-P
kat,
haha, awesome! There’s usually a selection of Japanese items in the asian grocery shops we go to, but it’s usually just a tiny section of the shop.
kim,
Yeah, we talked about doing a bountiful vegetable curry the next time – we have a box of “mild” in the pantry to also use up. Of course, Jac loves the idea of feeding me lots of vegies.
Ranee,
You can buy these from most Asian grocery stores as well as supermarkets that have an Asian food section. I got this from IGA in East Perth, but have seen it also in Woolworths.
Cookie,
Oh yeah. I wish I had some right now!
Tra,
Yep, pretty much! It was very easy.
they are so good, I used to make a whole heap and then freeze them for later. They’re pretty good with udon as a soup too.
jean,
Mmm, oooh, like a laksa! I must remember to try that next time.
oh my gawd i love that stuff.
