Lemon pepper fish with steamed vegetables

in Home cooking

A recent dinner, of panfried lemon pepper fish (snapper fillets, I believe) with steamed vegetables – carrot and cauliflower, and one of my least favourite – baby brussels sprouts! It’s my own fault – I saw the bags of baby brussels sprouts in the supermarket and said to Jac, “Look! Baby brussels sprouts!” Silly silly TFP. The rest is history. The fish was great, the carrot and cauliflower sweet. The brussels sprouts were… brussels sprouts. They are just so smelly to me! Jac took pity on me and only gave me a few baby brussels sprouts. I ate them all first to get them out of the way so I could enjoy the rest of the meal. :-P

Haha, good for you, cleaning your plate despite the brussels sprouts! My best friend won’t eat them on account of how they look like little brains. Ditto for walnuts. :)

The fish looks great! Did she coat it in flour or anything, or is it just seasoned and pan-fried?

I love steamed brussels sprouts but my fiance thinks they’re smelly too. He’ll eat them if they’re roasted in the oven for a long time with good seasoning though.

I have always been a hater of stinky brussels sprouts, but then a friend made some that were roasted and they were FABULOUS! She took fresh sprouts, cut off the hard end, sliced them in half, coated them with olive oil, sprinkled them with kosher salt, spraed them in a shallow baking pan (uncovered) and put them in the oven on a low heat setting (around 300 degrees F) for about an hour.

I became an instant convert.

Haha! I actually love brussels sprouts, and have gotten my boyfriend to like them too. Favorite way is to pan fry them with chopped bacon and onions! Although the last time I made them, the second my boyfriend walked in the door, he accused my cat of going to the bathroom outside his litter box because of the funny smell!

I’m no fan of brussel sprouts either. The most appealing I’ve yet seen (in a magazine) were fresh and sauteed with caramelized onions, then sprinkled with slivered almonds.

I may have spoken before about how much I also loathe the sulphurous horror of Satan’s Testicles aka brussel sprouts. I do not care how fresh or young they are or how many fancy schmancy recipes involving copious quantities of butter, bacon, garlic etc there are. Apart from I will eat a small quantity in bubble and squeak, there is no way of converting me to this vile veg.

I had a friend who used to put brussel sprouts into veg curry. That to me is the epitome of pure culinary evil.

Hahahaha poor TFP. I can relate to that. Brussels sprouts and me have a hatred for each other that goes waaaayyyyy back :D. But hats off to you for eating them anyway, I wouldn’t have done so most likely.

We have a Jello Art Show here which also features a “tacky food buffet”. One year I made blue Jello eggs cut in half with a real-egg deviled yolk filling piped in. But the best was the year I lightly steamed small, evenly trimmed Brussels sprouts, dried them off, then dipped them totally in chocolate coating and let them dry standing up on their flat bottoms. I presented them as “Belgian Truffle Surprises” and just about wet my pants laughing as people took these delicious-looking chocolate truffles, bit in, and found a whole Brussels sprout inside! A culinary triumph indeed.

Hey everyone,
Jac has cooked brussels sprouts with onion, garlic and butter, and they were surprisingly good. A friend of ours also cooked them for us once with bacon and onions, which helped with the stinkiness.

Erica,
I believe she covered the fish in seasoned flour (flour, salt, lemon pepper) before frying… either that or just rubbed it liberally in lemon pepper. Sorry, she’s not here right now for me to ask, but I know she’s done it either way before.

Cookie,
One reason I will eat them is because Jac loves them, but won’t buy them if I won’t eat them at all. So I figure I’ll eat a few and then she can feast on the rest to her heart’s content.

Brandi,
That sounds pretty good. I’ve told Jac about that so maybe she’ll try that method next time to try and convert me. :)

Megan,
The funny thing is a lot of people don’t like cabbage or cauliflower either because of the smell, but I love cabbage and cauliflower! It’s just the unique brussels sprouts smell I don’t like. :) See my first response above re: bacon and brussels sprouts!

Cindy,
That sounds interesting. Though I am not a fan of slivered almonds in savoury food – I prefer slivered almonds pressed into the iced side of a cake. :)

jetgirl,
I’m sure I’d like them battered and deepfried too. Maybe you can get them at the Texas State Fair. :-P

clekitty,
I’ve always done that! When I was a kid my mum or grandma would jokingly threaten to take my chicken away, because I must not like it as I’d left it uneaten on my plate.

Greenlady,
LOL Satan’s testicles! Jac would probably sneak them into a curry, but I’d find them and be horrified! :)

Sven,
Well, it wasn’t like she’d served me a whole big pile of them. It was easy enough to eat those couple very quickly.

kissy,
Mmm, that sounds nice! I’ve passed your suggestion on to Jac.

Thanks, evie, but no need to SHOUT.

deborah,
That really would be surprise! For some of us though, Belgian Truffle Shock. Or Belgian Truffle Dismay. :)
