they could do it the way malaysian malay hawkers do with their 'ayam percik'. either tie it with a pandan leaf or a very thin strip of bamboo. :)

Thanks all, for your comments (especially re: the rubber band!). The rubber band always seems intact and not melted at all. I've never been that worried about the rubber band being a rubber band - my concern has always just been with its horrible aftertaste (I guess that's how a glutton's mind works!). This particular chook came from an IGA supermarket. It's always so tasty, apart from the rubber-flavoured chicken ankles!

jessi,
Your lolwut moment story cracked me up, good one! Good to see the foor porn diverted hubby from the porn interogation! XD

Greenlady,
I love baked beans with mashed potato as well as with rice! I love baked beans with Jac's leftover garlic mashed potatoes the next morning for breaky. So good.

jetgirl,
You've already seen my responses to that line! I will spare everyone else with further quotes from that song! :-P

erin,
Interesting... I would've thought the Supa Valu way was a more economical way! Who knows...*shrug*

Beauty,
On this occasion, no! :-P

Rubber band?! That's disgusting. Won't they melt in the oven and it's toxic too!
Which supermarket is this?! Hoping it's not Woolworths or IGA!
I think someone should write a letter of complaint over this. I am really concerned!

Ours uses a rubber string; at least the string is coated with cotton and leaves no flavor. It is like a gift tie. I think they have to bind up the chickens to prevent flappage of parts and subsequent overcooking of said parts. Speak up to them!I am sure they want to make a product that tastes good. Some people do the same with Maine lobster (not that I can afford it!)...they band the claws with a thick blue rubber band (in the old days they pushed a little wooden peg into the joint). Then they cook it and chill the lob WITH THE RUBBER BAND STILL ON! Who is that lob gonna pinch once s/he is cooked? Makes for some nasty rubber-flavored claw meat.

Using a rubber band is rubbish. I used to work at Supa Valu in the deli, way back when I was in first year, and we would just cut a slit under the chicken skin, down near the end of the drumstick, and thread the other drumstick through the hole. Voila, no bands, no kitchen string. Not that hard. I can't believe they're allowed to use rubber, to be honest. Surely it's not the safest material when heated up?

I'm guessing the rubber band nonsense is due to health and safety regulations, they probably aren't allowed to use something more sensible and less unpleasant like various forms of string.

I keep meaning to try baked beans and rice, I think the only reason I haven't yet is because I am too fond of baked beans and mashed spuds !

this comment has little to do with the food in this post, but it seems like it should go here since this was the entry that inspired the craziness:

dad: what're you looking at? food on flickr?
me: yeah, i'm on a food blog, and this is its picture stream.
dad: oh, what's it called?
me: "the food pornographer"
dad: how did you find it? googling porn?
me: uhh...?
dad: oh, man, that chicken looks good.

random lolwut moment in my house. ;) thanks, tfp. xD
