Hazelnut Roll, RIP

October 9, 2009

in Reflections

I posted a link on the TFP Facebook page to a news story – Nestle buyout kills iconic ice creams. I was devastated to find out that the Hazelnut Roll ice cream will no longer be available once the current stocks run out. I don’t eat a lot of ice cream, but there are two ice creams I absolutely love – one is the Pine Lime Splice, and the other is the Hazelnut Roll. If you’re not familiar with the old Hazelnut Roll, as it says on the rainbow foil packaging, it’s a “choc coated vanilla and hazelnut flavoured ice cream”.

Hazelnut Roll

The chocolate coating reminds me of Ice Magic (see Wikipedia entry on Magic Shell) – it crackles just like Ice Magic when you bite into it. It’s one of the sensations I associate with my childhood – my childhood once we we’d migrated to Australia, though; we never had Ice Magic in Malaysia.

Hazelnut Roll, before the first bite

I love the ice cream inside because it’s not too sweet. My only complaint was that Hazelnut Rolls should be longer, or available in a jumbo or king size. Well, now my revised complaint is they’re no longer making them. So sad.

Hazelnut Roll, nom nom

You can still find them in the ice cream freezers at some shops – only as individual ice creams, not in the 4-packs – so if you like them, or want to try them, I’d hurry – there are not many left out there.

If you want the Hazelnut Roll to make a comeback, Like this Facebook page so we can all tell Nestle: Bring back the Hazelnut Roll! ***

Didn’t Nathan and Nat (from Nova) have a campaign a few years back to save the Hazelnut Roll?

That’s so sad! I hate it when processed foods become discontinued because there’s no way of recreating them. I went through a similar withdrawal a few years ago when they discontinued Planter’s Cheez Balls here in the States.

Oh! I’ve been in Australia now for about 9 months and I have never seen these before? I must look out for them and try one before they soon all disappear :(

This is one of my childhood favourites. Sad to see it go too. My other favourite is a lime split (something like the pine-lime splice).

Oh gee… I didn’t know they are removing this. I like this one too! Not that I take ice cream very often though..

I’m sorry this will soon be unavailable to you. A fond childhood memory association is always poignant with food.

i_love_eating,
Yeah… they’re definitely disappearing FAST.

Krissy,
Not sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did!

Megan,
Yeah – that’s the worst thing. There really is no substitute. :(((

clekitty,
It’s a tough situation – if you never try them you will never know what they’re like. If you try them, you may discover you love them, but then never be able to enjoy them again!

Chrissy,
Yep. So sad.

dea,
I love lime Splits too. But since they’re hard to come by at corner delis, I discovered the Splice, which is become my favourite.

Peky,
I don’t eat ice cream that often either – definitely not as often as I’d like to!

Cindy,
Yeah. And I didn’t mention that the Hazelnut Roll was the first ice cream I ate when we came to Australia – so there’s definitely a sentimental element to it for me too.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I only just found out about this when I went looking for one a week ago and couldn’t find any. I am so disappointed. They have been my favourite icecream since I was a kid. I am really craving one at the moment. Wish there was something I could do about it.

OMG is it still around even today? Im in Australia, and I emailed all the ice-cream companies here about 5 years ago searching for this ice-cream. We haven’t had it for a good 15yrs, it was the BEST.

I cant believe you’ve been enjoying this all this time.

I LOVED these as a child and was talking about them this morning — they haven’t been in AUSTRALIA for years! YUM! So good to find your pictures online – a blast from the past. They were the most exotic icecreams when i was growing up. If you’ve been eating these, you are lucky coz we have missed them!

Very disappointed, same as Mish, I re-discovered the Hazelnut Roll ice cream bar in 2006 at Prevelly Park store and wzs so excited I took photos, I hadn’t seen them for years either in the Eastern States, I loved them as a child. Currently back in WA and on the hunt for another Hazelnut Roll fix, but alas can’t find them anywhere, so thought I’d google and see what i found, to my horror they’ve been discontinued…..HATE THAT…R.I.P HAZELNUT ROLL…….

I can not believe it.
Do you think if enough people contacted Nestle they would
consider bringing this iconic icecream back into existence?

Ohhhh i love those they bring back fond memories of perth, where i grew up, last 1 i had was in 2001, went back for a few days in 2006 & forgot to look for them, too busy stocking up on spearmint milk. to me they are almost like a dessert, they are so yummy esp the hazelnut icecream mmm, god it sucks the way they discontinue nice stuff, but some of the rubbish they do sell, i wouldnt buy anyway. damn those overseas companies.

For those of you who are die hard fans of the Hazlenut Roll, you can buy them in Singapore under a different name tho…

I thought you could still get hazelnut rolls in WA, but I went over there searching and didn’t see any.
Are they now extinct? Very Very sad if so.
There needs to be a movement to get the Nestle people thinking about a come back thats creates media coverage.

Shane, they have definitely been discontinued here in WA. I’ve started a Facebook Page so we can tell Nestle: Bring back the Hazelnut Roll!
