Work lunch – chicken katsu burger with fries

November 15, 2009

in Eating out, Takeaway

We have noodles, curry, Japanese and sandwiches in East Perth but what I’d like is a real burger place. Or even a junk food franchise burger place. I know having easy access to junk food would make bad days so much better. Of course, I’m not talking “nutritionally” better – I’m talking about the shameless, indulgent “better” that comforts you when you’re cranky and feeling like crap. But until that happens, every now and then I will get a burger from Sushi @ Royal (Shop 2, 131 Royal St, East Perth). A chicken katsu burger does make a fine, comforting lunch on a bad day, even if it doesn’t feel as naughty as a McSomething burger.

Chicken katsu burger

I love that this burger has sliced cucumber in it, as well as tomato and lettuce. The cucumber makes it like a mini garden salad, not just a garnish! And that there’s barbecue sauce and mayonnaise in it too. And the burger is assembled right in front of you. It’s all part of the experience. I have no objection to watching my food being prepared – I much prefer to watch than make my own. I like getting lunch at MYO from time to time, but sometimes it just feels wrong paying to assemble my own sandwich.

The fries are great because 1) they cook them to order so they are fresh and crisp and 2) you can choose between plain salt and chicken salt (chicken salt for the win every time!).

Fries with not enough chicken salt

So until McChicken moves into East Perth (probably never) I will continue to love these chicken katsu burgers. Well, if McChicken happened to move in, McChicken, chicken katsu burger and I would all be great friends. :-P

hey TFP
If you guys ever find yourselves freo way, flipside in north freo does seriously good burgers and chips. You can also sit in the funky bar next bar (over a lemon, lime and bitters!)and they’ll bring it through for you.
good stuff!

I have a feeling TFP that East Perth is one of the suburbs in Perth that has laws (or some kind of official policy anyway) in place to prevent the opening of chain fast food restaurants like McDs and Red Rooster. I’m pretty sure that Nedlands/Dalkeith has the same policy.

On the upside, I’m sure that a katsu chicken burger is probably no better for you nutritionally than a McDonalds burger, so you’re in luck when you need that greasy hit! :P

That sandwich does look good. :-) I’m surprised there’s no Mc-anything in East Perth? Here in the States it’s **everywhere** — lol. Yeah, I think the price of a meal shouldn’t include self-assembly either. We all have those “I want junk food and no apologies” days too. :-)

For years I’d been curious about Perth. Your blog fills in some basic questions. It’s a place I’d like to visit someday (likely never will); but the 14-hour time difference would probably be a nightmare to deal with.

…whoops: Make that 15 hours (we change the clocks by 1 hour twice a year; last week was one of those changes). I’m posting Sunday at 6:35 a.m. and it’s 9:35 p.m. your time.

Well at least there’s a greater variety of veggies in that yummy looking katsu burger than there is in a McChicken burger! :)

O.k., help out the American. What’s chicken salt?

My assumption is that it’s something along the lines of what we call seasoned salt (it’s salt, paprika, white pepper, garlic, probably MSG…all mixed together. It has a distinctive red-orange color and makes everything taste better).

I think it’s a blessing in disguise that there is no McDonalds in East Perth. That chicken katsu burger looks really good, better than a McChicken I reckon :)

Used to be in the east perth area a lot.. Sushi @ Royal never did burgers when I was their =( – Definitely something I agree that was missing from the area.. one day I guess. The Katsudon their was pretty awesome though.
