Puffs
With my sister and her hubby in town from Sydney, Mum invited all of us “kids” and our partners to a curry puff making (and eating!) session. Jac usually joins in the curry puff making, but I must admit my curry puff shaping skills are hopeless. I was there more for the eating than the making. :D
The curry puffs were fried in batches in the wok on the wok burner. Someone asked me why my parents seem to always cook on the wok on the barbecue. Well, their wok doesn’t fit on their stove! There is a wok burner attachment on the stove but it’s right near the wall and will only fit a very small wok – so Mum cooks with her wok on the barbie. It’s good in summer – keeps the heat out of the house.
Not all the puffs were filled with curry. There were also puffs filled with corned beef – the kind that comes out of the tin you open with the supplied metal key (Fray Bentos corned beef, any one? :)). These were especially for Ruby, but to be honest, the rest of us loved them as much as she did. The edges of the corned beef puffs were marked with extra patterning made with a fork.
Some of the curry puffs were eaten, piping hot and fresh. Some of them were allowed to cool, then packed away in containers for us to take home for later.
Pies
In addition to the fresh curry puffs and corned beef puffs, there were pies, hot out of the oven! Out came the chopping board and a knife, and one by one, the pies were carved, shared and eagerly sampled. I had a bite (literally, a bite!) of most of the pies, sharing pieces of pie with Jac.
Jac is normally not a big fan of pepper steak (she never orders pepper steak – she’d rather have steak with diane sauce, bearnaise sauce or mushroom sauce any day). She was surprised at how much she enjoyed the pepper steak pie. As it turned out, the pepper steak pie was Jac’s favourite of the lot.
This strange looking pie was the Tex Mex pie. Before we cut into it I thought it looked more like a sweet custard tart than a meat pie! (It smelled like a meat pie, though!)
This was my favourite pie of the lot. The meaty gravy had a hint of chilli and Mexican spice, with beans and corn in it. There was a layer of thick gooey melted cheese on top of the gravy that oozed with every bite. According to the Mrs Mac’s website, this is a limited edition pie, only available while stocks last.
I also quite liked the curry pie. I’ve always enjoyed curry pies. When I was in high school I used to go into the art room on Saturdays, along with the Year 11 and 12 art students, to work on my paintings. For lunch, I would walk down to the closest deli and buy myself a curry meat pie, a bag of peanut M & Ms and a glass buddy bottle of Coke. :)
In curry meat gravy were cubes of potato and carrot. Mum tried a piece of the curry pie and said it didn’t taste like real curry, but then Mum has extremely high curry standards and isn’t so keen on “western” curries. :)
It was a similar style to the Tex Mex pie, with a gooey layer of creamy melted cheese, but without the Tex Mex flavour. It got the thumbs up from the all the cheese lovers.
The last pie we tried was the chicken, cheese and bacon Cruizer. The Cruizer is a long rather than round pie, specially designed for eating on the go. The longer shape means a smaller surface area and a narrower pie cavity, meaning less gravy leakage as you eat the pie, making it less messy to eat. I was pretty full by the time I tried this last piece of pie, but it was very good, my kind of pie – in the white sauce with the chunks of chicken and pieces of bacon, there were also mushrooms. Yum!
So there you have it. Curry puffs and pies!

It’s a good thing I indulged a gourmet chicken pie this morning around 10:00 a.m., because I’d be ready to attack the monitor and these photos otherwise!! :-p And yes, I thought of you/this blog while enjoying that savoury chicken pie with a generous sprinkling of black pepper.
God what a good pie filled post! Going to have to see if I can hunt down some tex mex pies. Those look really good.

“If it’s not a Mrs Mac’s, take it back!”Haha! To be frank, I didn’t enjoy Mrs Mac’s pies at all while I was in Perth, for some reason I can’t recall I remember being pretty grossed out at something to do with the pie. But they look so good here! And I was fine with Jester’s (loved their Footy pie) but when I tried one last yr it just wasn’t as nice anymore – soggy crust and bland innards. :( Or maybe I just don’t have a good pie palate?
BUT your mother’s curry puffs are DA BOMB, TFP!!How fun to have a curry puff-making session!! She should sell them, they’d go like hotcakes!!
I have the exact same plates as your mom! The one on the barbie. So weird to see something so familiar in a different setting half way around the world. My mom had bought these plates in Canada back in the 80’s.

You know what did it for me, seeing the pics of the pies opened with all their gooeyness visible to the eye … if you had just taken pics of the pies unopened I wouldn’t have been fancying a pie !!

Another makan-makan gathering. Lucky you. Love that karipap pusing (spiral currypuff). Made me want to make one now. I’m not too good at making the filling though. Can’t really get the right combination of spiciness of the curry and the ‘wetness’ and texture of the potatoes. Need more try.

Mmmm the spiral curry puffs looks really yum! My mum used to make them but she always complained about the oily mess and we have heaps of leftover oil after that and everything that my mum cooks tastes like curry puffs.
I used to live in Malaysia but I live in New Zealand now and it is so awesome to look at your photos of Malaysian food because we try to look for yummy M’sian food but we don’t have heaps like chee cheong fun and that fried carrot cake stuff.
I love how you talk about your food. I was cooking creamy mushroom pasta with my sister today and I was telling her about how I found your website and how you like mushrooms because we really like mushrooms and eggplants. They’re like our fav vegetables. My sister was like “Are you sure you’re not talking about yourself? TFP sounds awesome, I have to go look at her website!” And I love how Jac likes experimenting with new recipes because that’s what my sister does too! And she cooks for me because I really can’t cook at all Hahaha I’ve just been raving about your website to her. So anyway..I’ve been backtracking and looking at your archives. I’m at May 2009 now so I’ll just get back to doing that.
Those curry puffs you make remind me of what my mom and grandma make. They take walnuts and ground them up and ad a little sugar to sweeten them and some cinnamon and maybe a tad of nutmeg?and then they make their own bread and fill them with the walnut mixture and they end up looking JUST like the curry puffs on the outside. They’re very tasty. Middle Eastern food rocks! haha. I also must say that those puffs, the pastry on them looks amazing when theyre fried, all flakey! That first meat pie, i thought it was a chocolate filled pie haha. I’m not a fan of steak honeslty, i don’t eat red meat but the chicken ones look tasty!

Wooow those curry puffs look freaking delicious! My mum prefers to deep fry stuff outside too, mainly because of the smell, the mess and we have a gas burner outside which gets hot faster than the electric stove in the kitchen. :)
The colour of the meat in those pies looks way to dark for my liking. Like almost a colour additive. The chunks of meat should really be grey. Either way you know old Kevin here would shove a couple of those down his throat before they had time to cool. I love hot pastry. Often I used to peel the skin of a sausage roll ( in high schoool) and dunk it in some choc milk and eat that before I got down to business on that beautiful sausage filling. I’m salivating like my pug Ronson just thinking about them. Mmmmm heavenly.

Glad you found the site (yes, mushrooms and eggplant rule! My other favourite vegies are green beans and corn). Hope you’ve enjoyed trawling through the archives! We are so thankful we have Spencer Village where I can have my chee cheong fun and chai tow kway fixes – not sure where else in Perth we can get those, so if the stall ever closes down, we are in trouble! :-P They usually close down for a couple of weeks over Chinese New Year and you should see the long line of people waiting on the day they re-open!

I don’t eat much red meat myself, but I’ve always loved meat pies. But yeah, chicken pies are my favourite. Whenever we go anywhere new to get a pie I will always try one of their chicken varieties. Jac will usually go for steak and kidney if they have it, if not, some other steak variation.

My books are not very well catalogued currently. I started cataloguing them using LibraryThing, but just haven’t had time to finish the task. I’d recommend LibraryThing for sure, it’s a great tool.

The plastic wrappers are specially designed so you can microwave or ovenbake the pies with the wrappers on. So the first picture you see of the pies still in their wrappers is how they looked freshly baked out of the oven. :) It’s surprisingly easy to remove the wrappers – the pie inside is hot, but the wrapper is not too bad to handle with fingertips.

YUM YUM YUM. I want one meat and cheese, pepper steak, country and chicken. The closest thing we have here are pot pies. They’re good, but nothing like the real thing.
