Dinner – chicken, green bean and chilli stir-fry

April 13, 2010

in Home cooking

Jac cooked this dinner recently – a stir-fry with chicken, spring onion, garlic, green beans and fresh red chilli, served on rice. The chicken thigh pieces were juicy and springy to bite, just how I love chicken to be. The beans were lovely and crisp. The chilli came from our garden, and it was hot! As I ate, my tongue burned and tingled, and my nose started to run, but it was so yummy I didn’t want to stop eating. Towards the end, I picked out the chilli and chilli seeds as I ate. Yes, I am a chilli wuss – no way could I keep up with the chilli-eating feats of my chilli-loving friend Charlene, who orders her laksa extra-extra-extra hot with extra chilli on the side, starts eating it and then looks around for more chilli. You are my chilli-eating hero, Charlene! :P

Chicken, green bean and chilli stir-fry

So, are you a chilli wuss or a chilli hero?

PS. Jac knows I am a chilli wuss but I told her to go right ahead and use as much chilli as she wanted – yes, silly me! I did eat the leftovers for breakfast the next morning too (it really was so yummy I wanted to eat more of it) – so maybe I should change my descriptor from chilli wuss to chilli masochist! :P

Definitely a Chili-wuss. I wouldn’t even be able to handle that. Sweet chili sauce is as hot as I can get. D:

Never too hot for me. I like Thai chiles the best and in fact I ate spoonful upon spoonful on top of my stir fry at lunch today.

For some reason, I thought you were a chile head TFP!

That looks great!
I love spicy, but not too spicy–I want to taste my food not feel my tongue on fire.

Oh, I’m a total chili wuss, though quite often, I stupidly order the hottest food I can, even though I know I won’t be able to handle it

I’m somewhere in between…

I love things with a bit of a kick, like Mexican salsa roja (red hot sauce, specifically found in taco shops). But, when I go out for Thai or Indian, I order mild-medium. Props to those who can handle Thai-hot or Indian-hot! :)

I’m a moderate as in everything else. But dear hb is totally a chilliefreak. For him the hotter the better. If its not hot then the food is tasteless. Because of that, my tolerant towards chilli goes up higher than when I was in Malaysia.

Definitely Chili hero. The hottest thing I ever ate was sichuan hot pot with hot chili oil spitting out. You really need a lot of water afterwards.

Oh my, how I miss my grandma’s balacan……..I was a chili hero when I was young (20s) and only a random one now, if the food is really good to brave it! Hahahahaha………

Neither! I love spicy food and willingly put myself through bowls of tom yam soup, and add plenty of chilli flakes to even my pasta, but I’m selective about what I like to be spicy. Certain dishes need the chilli kick and others don’t. But I am very partial to a good, spicy-hot sambal belacan. Give me that, and a bowl of steamed rice and I’ll demolish it all. But on the scale, I lean more toward chilli hero than chilli wuss. :P

Used to be a chilli hero but having lived away from Singapore/Malaysia for so long now, the tolerance levels have dropped a couple of notches. Still, am more than willing to suffer the heat for some yummy, dishes like tiger crying or devil curry :)

I’m out of practice. Went to P’s place the other night for dinner – her hubby made Hainanese chicken rice *died happy* and this super duper chilli to go along with it, but it was also really hot (he must have used extra-power chilli padi i think). Hotter than anything I’ve eaten in a good long while – my sinuses got a good clearing out that night! However, almost everyone around the table was trying not to gasp audibly while eating, so I didn’t feel so bad, since they’re all serious chilli eaters.

That dish above looks awesome, just the kind of thing i like to eat for lunch. What’s in the sauce that Jac cooked it in?

Lovely looking food! :-) (As always…)

I guess I’m somewhere in between. I can take hot chilli but dont necessarily like it too hot. Chilli temporarily renders your tastebuds useless and my rule is simple. If the food is so hot that I can no longer taste the food (which is the point right?) then that is the point that it is too hot for me.

That said chilli tolerance is increased the more you have it, so some people will be able to tolerate more heat while still tasting their food. These people are not chilli heroes. They’re chilli SUPERheroes, and should probably go around wearing tights and a cape! :-)

Definitely a chilli ( or chile ) wuss. I like just a little chili in my food and definitely can’t hack eating loads of raw chili in a dish. It’s hard when eating out as I love loads of spice and flavour but NOT tons of heat :(

Heheh awesome, guys! Looks like we have a good mix of wusses, heroes and in-betweens. :) I think Jac is an in-between herself.

Maine and Charlene,
Jac tossed the chicken in a little cornflour and flavoured it very simply, with soy sauce and white pepper. The garlic and spring onion added a lot of flavour too. It was quite a dry dish overall with no sauce to speak of.

While I found this dish very hot, I could definitely taste more than just chilli, which is why I enjoyed it so much. So maybe I’m not quite as wussy as I thought I was. :P

I like pickled green chillies but not chilli padi (birds eye chillies, the tiny super hot ones). And I’d never be brave enough to try habanero chillies!

I’m hoping we have two little chilli heroes in the making in Ruby and Zoe. At Chinese New Year, Ruby and Zoe both ate my auntie’s curry puffs, and asked for more! Zoe’s eyes watered a little as she ate, but she kept munching away. I was very impressed. LOLs at Craig’s chilli superheroes, with images of Ruby and Zoe in masks and capes. XD

Yet another beautiful dish by Jac.

I have to be careful with “Asian” chillis. The types of hot peppers used in local Mexican food is usually no trouble [habanero is the hottest], but for some reason the chillis used in local Chinese restaurants can *really* get me. I recently had no trouble with spicy plum chicken, though needed extra steamed rice to help “cut the heat” — lol.

More the chilli the better. Whatever I eat I try and push myself hotter…. it will be my downfall one day!

I was in a Mexican place a few years ago and got such a hot pepper, that I could hardly catch my breathe! All conversation stopped while I choked and tears were flowing down my face. The waiter apologized and didn’t know how it got in there(?!). After that I was wary of anything hot. I got over it in time. I find I like food spicier, the older I get.BUT… I’m careful and sort of explore food before I just dive in! I’d say I’m a hot pot, while treading carefully! Jac’s meal looks great as usual!

You can flick your extra chillies to me, providing you are careful not to flick them into my eyes, and make sure I have lots of tissues at the ready :D

Looks like some perfect eating for our sudden onset winter. I kept myself warm with huge chunks of delicious cheeses last night. Winter eating, oh yes!

*sighhhhh*

This new site of yours works a treat! I’m now going to sneak back on some of your ‘reviews’ and see where I’d like to eat haha ;-)

Hope all’s well with you and yours TFP – oh – and happy belated birthday by the way!
Cheers…

Hehe, I like those terms, chili hero and wuss! i love spicy foods but don’t have a terribly high tolerance for them, so I’ll often end up over-reaching myself with spicy food. I think my tolerance is higher than a few years ago though, and I do like the taste (vs the heat) of chili. Sometimes when I’m in the mood for something chili-ful, I’ll cook up a dish that my boyfriend will claim I’ve “ruined” with chili powder!
