EDIT, 10 October 2011: I’ve been informed Crumpet has closed and will be opening soon under new ownership.
Crumpet in East Victoria Park has been on our list of places to check out and at last, we had breakfast there this weekend. It was great!
I’m sure you agree that it would be sacrilege to eat breakfast at a cafe called Crumpet that makes its own crumpets – and not order crumpets! We ordered a serve of crumpets with butter and honey(AU$3.50) to share. The crumpets were brought to our table very soon after we ordered (as speedily as you’d want the garlic bread to arrive at your table when dining in an Italian restaurant), and on that chilly Saturday morning, the warm smell of freshly toasted crumpets and honey was absolutely glorious.
Jac sliced the first crumpet into two, spreading butter and pouring honey over each half. You can order your crumpets with butter and Vegemite if you prefer savoury toppings to sweet.
A toasted homemade crumpet slathered with lashings of butter and honey may be one of the most perfect things ever. Crumpet’s crumpets don’t have the characteristic holes you get in commercially made crumpets, and they were a lot softer in texture too – but really nice.
I ordered a pot of English breakfast tea for one (AU$3.50) with soy milk (50 cents). Jac ordered an iced coffee (AU$5.00), which came in a spectacularly tall glass.
The iced coffee came with whipped cream and a big scoop of ice cream, and a sprinkling on top of fresh coffee beans, toffee chunks and what tasted like vanilla-flavoured rock sugar. Jac said the coffee itself was quite strong, but once you mixed it with the cream, ice cream and all those trimmings it was just perfect – sweet, cold and milky with delicious special crunchy bits.
At Crumpet, you can order eggs Benedict with leg ham (AU$12.50) or smoked salmon (AU$16.50) – Jac ordered the smoked salmon option. The salmon and poached eggs were served on a bed of fresh spinach leaves on top of a toasted English muffin, all smothered with a creamy dill and caper hollandaise. Dill and capers are, of course, traditional accompaniments to smoked salmon; with the leg ham option you get plain hollandaise.
The two local free-range eggs were perfectly poached – I’m sorry I didn’t get a photo of the yolks to show you just how vividly orange and beautifully gooey they were.
Jac declared she would definitely eat at Crumpet again.
Well, actually, the conversation went something like this:
TFP: So, would you eat at Crumpet again?
Jac: Hell, yeah!
I had the mushies on toast (AU$11.00) with a side order of bacon (AU$3.00). The sauteed sliced mushrooms were piled on top of garlic-rubbed ciabatta toast and served with lots of fresh rocket and crumbled feta. I thought the toast would be unpleasantly soggy underneath all those juicy mushrooms, but was surprised at how the ciabatta retained a lot of its toasty crunch. A garlic rub makes all the difference to savoury toast! Regular readers will know how much I love cooked spinach for breakfast – well, add fresh rocket to the list. The combination of mushrooms, toast, rocket, cheese and bacon was fantastic, in taste as well as texture.
I was really impressed with the bacon. Two enormous rashers with a yummy ratio of lean to fat. I’m pretty sure I told Jac a few too many times how impressed I was with the bacon.
Crumpet is currently in winter menu mode. I want to return for more crumpets with butter and honey. I’d also love to try the croque madame or dig into a fluffy stack of pancakes with fresh banana and chocolate honeycomb butter. I’m a savoury tooth but chocolate honeycomb butter sounds so decadent and so good!
At Crumpet, you order and pay at the counter. There are home-baked cakes, salads, tarts and bread rolls bursting with fresh fillings on display – it all makes you feel even hungrier! Service was great – very friendly and efficient, not overly chatty. The food and drinks came out really quickly and everything tasted fresh and delicious. The servings were generous. The homemade crumpets were lovely. Now that I’ve eaten Crumpet’s homemade crumpets I don’t think I will look at supermarket-bought ones with quite as much fondness as before.

Yum…yum…YUM! :-) And they serve breakfast all day?? Definitely a place I’d visit if ever in Perth. I do not like cold/iced coffee, but that which Jac ordered; mama mia! I’d make an exception. Dear Crumpet: Can you open a restaurant in my North America city? Please, *pretty* please? ;-)
Oh my – how perfect do those crumpets look! I have been meaning to try and make them at home for a while now!
oh my this is simply gorgeous.. the iced coffee is to die for!!
SMOKED SALMON! fresh-made crumpets! I’ll be visiting for sure! Nom, nom, nom :-) On a tangent, isn’t it a bit funny to see a fitness ad/place next door the the cafe..?
Oh my that looks so yummy!!
I love my crumpets with peanut butter and honey mmmmm
salmon eggs bene is my absolute fave breakfast food – will def have to try crumpets now! look delish!!
OMG – those photos make me wanna run there right now!!!
Great to see local food being publicised in all it’s glory.
Good job TFP :)
Love the name, love the photos, love the review, and have serious hankering for crumpets now!
Love the cute little place! Never had crumpets before to be honest…looks like this is where I’ll have to go…if….you know, I’m ever on your side of the world XD. I JUST MET AN AUSTRALIAN BAND TODAY! They were playing at our BFD concert in California; they were called “Violent Soho”…I don’t get it, but, they were cool haha.
American here, totally confused about crumpets versus English muffins. When you described Crumpets’ crumpets you said they didn’t have holes like the store bought variety, so I’m thinking okay crumpets are English muffins, but when you described the eggs Benedict you said they were served on English muffins, so that leads me to believe that crumpets and English muffins are not one and the same, can you explain the difference?
Couldn’t wait until tomorrow morning.
Dill and caper hollandaise. Dear god, stuffed with dim sum or not, I’d have some NOW.
Now, dammit!!
I want to go to there!
Especially for crumpets and eggs benedict.
Oh, dear. Those crumpets are simply killing me with their deliciousness… I love putting honey and butter on anything. (Not so sure about vegemite, though… :P) Both of your breakfasts look amazing. Mmm, smoked salmon… gosh! Thanks for making me hungry. Again.
Wei-Wei
Mmm, crumpets… (yeah I know that’s getting a bit tired now…)
Really though all that food looks pretty amazing!
And I like the words “Crumpet’s crumpets …” – Not sure why, I just like that combination of words! :-)
The Benedict looks absolutely scrumptious! A bold combination with raw salmon too! would love to try it, or try making it :)
I want to go to there too!
Though I just ate dinner I can hear my sweet stomach rumbling. The idea of chocolate honeycomb butter over pancakes is just too appealing.
In response to AZ’s query –
A crumpet is leavened using baking powder or yeast, which results in the little holes which are characteristic of crumpets. They’re not cooked in an oven – they’re traditionally cooked on a griddle (or girdle, depending on where you’re from in the UK), which results in the golden bottom. They’re made with wheat flour.
English muffins are yeast leavened, and contain cornmeal. They’re usually baked in an oven.
Thanks Juji!
THE.BEST.KIND.OF.BREAKFAST.EVER. :)
The honey and butter slathered on the crumpets looks deliciously lavish. But I must say that I am loving the look of the mushrooms and rocket leaves. Mushrooms on toast is one of my favourite meals, anytime of the day. Now I totally have to pair it with rocket and cheese salad! YUM.
Ooooo I love how Jac slathers her crumpet with butter and honey. Nothing tastes better than a hunk of fresh bake goods slathered in delicious, melty butter. Butter makes everything better.
There is a Diner in Calgary called Diner Deluxe, it has the most amazing hollandaise sauce ever! Everything I eat it I always think about TFP.
Usually in your posts there will be one item that I love in particular… but this one is really a toss-up because everything looks so delicious! I’m sad that this restaurant is halfway around the world for me, because I want to go there!!!
In my American city, the crumpets are in he canned biscuit section. They are with the more high end English muffins. I love them with butter and marmalade! TFP, your meals look outstanding!
O.M.G. Everything looks WONDERFUL, but those Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon and that dill and caper Hollandaise are to die for…. and (for Perth) the prices are good too! MUST GO next time I’m in Perth.
Crumpet is my fiancee’s favourite local cafe for breakfast on a weekend with a couple of mates… it’s less than a five minute walk from our place. I’ve only been once but the staff were kind enough to make me a fruit salad with yogurt and honey, even though it wasn’t on the menu.
And the prices are amazing!
Cindy,
I love places that serve breakfast all day. I love places that serve everything on their menu as long as the kitchen is open. Because my tummy and brain have a knack of craving breakfast food at lunch and dinner food at breakfast. :)
Lisa,
They were so good. It would be fun to try making some at home. But I think I’ll just return to Crumpet. :)
Christine,
That iced coffee was fantastic indeed.
Currie_lah,
I must admit I didn’t notice that fitness ad while I was there – I only noticed it when working on the photos! I must’ve been blinded by all that bacon when I was there.
pinkie pie,
I like peanut butter with butter. :)
emma,
Oh, crumpets are fantastic! I kind of wish I had a crumpet dripping with butter and honey right NOW.
Thanks angelbaby,
Oh yes, I’m always happy to publicise local food (as long as it’s delicious local food, of course!).
Thanks hannybanny,
Hope you got to eat crumpets!
Kagenosuke,
Well if you’re ever anywhere you can get a crumpet with butter and honey, I hope you try it! It’s one of life’s simple pleasures, I reckon. :) It’s even better to eat a hot buttery crumpet on a cold winter’s day.
AZ,
I hope Juji’s explanation below helped clarify the differences between crumpets and English muffins. Yes, typically crumpets have the little holes. These crumpets are a homemade variation without all the little holes.
Charlene,
You would SO love the smoked salmon eggs Benedict. I even said to Jac, “Charlene would so love your dish!”
Jay,
You guys would love it. I’d love to go back again, so if you’d be up for an excursion… :P
Wei-Wei,
I love butter and honey on bread too – on lovely soft fresh bread or on toast. Hope you got to eat something to get rid of that TFP-induced hunger. :)
Craig,
Hahaha in my original draft of this post I mentioned something about how I liked saying “Crumpet’s crumpets”… but I edited that out in the final version. :D
Boon Lee,
I’ve never been a fan of smoked salmon or eggs Benedict, but all the people I know who like those two items absolutely LOVE them combined.
Juji,
so when are we going? :P
Justina,
Hahah, agreed!
Dea,
The funny thing is, before we got there, Jac kept talking about mushrooms on toast. So much so by the time we arrived, I had a terrible craving for mushrooms! She switched over to the smoked salmon eggs Benedict as soon as she saw it on the menu, so I ordered the mushrooms on toast for myself. :) Yes – rocket and cheese ftw.
nina,
YES! I agree – butter makes everything better! I also think bacon makes everything better too! :P
Megan,
Sorry about that! That’s part of the torture of reading food blogs, I guess. :)
kathy,
It was a wonderful breakfast. Ooh, thanks for reminding me – in our fridge we have homemade marmalade made by my sister-in-law. Must eat more soon. :P
Rhonda,
Yes – you must try Crumpet next time you’re in Perth! You would love it!
Lauren,
Lucky you, living less than 5 mins walk away! *jealous*
OMG!! That Benedict with the smoked salmon is the best looking thing I’ve ever seen, and the first picture is, quite probably, my favorite of your shots on this site. I just cured my own salmon this weekend and there is tons leftover, I am SO making that the second I get home…
Cheers, Chef To False Metal.
I’ve tried to like smoked salmon over the years, but so far no joy. I want to like it, I really do…
Went for breakfast this morning. Crumpets were deliscious, eggs benedict was good. I just found it hard to have a conversation as it was very noisy….kitchen noises and the music.
Kate,
We sat outside when we ate at Crumpet, so we just had street/traffic noises to contend with. I did think when I was inside placing my order that it might get noisy if busy. I guess you’ve just confirmed my suspicion.
I ate here recently after a work mate recommended it! It was great, very well priced, great produce, perfectly cooked eggs. I completely agree with the rocket and feta that come with the mushies!
I’d like to say I recommend it but then im scared I won’t get a seat next time I go! :)
Does get a little noisy when its busy but still very very worth it!!
Now I am unable to buy crumpets at the supermarket also! The yummiest baked goods EVER are at Crumpets – I am catching the bus today to get more and am dragging more family members from the other side of the river for this brilliant brekky :)
I am going here this sunday with a girlfriend! I can’t wait to try those crumpets AND I am defo ordering one of those ice coffee’s. It looks amazing!
My work mates and I have been drooling over this review this morning. Nice work!
