My friend Charlene came over for laksa dinner a few weeks ago. Jac made curry laksa with chicken, prawns, fish cake, tofu, bean sprouts, rice noodles and egg noodles. She used Chilliz brand curry laksa paste. When Charlene and I walked in (she picked me up from work that day and drove us home), Jac was stirring the big pot of curry soup as it bubbled on the stove – the whole kitchen smelled magnificently of curry. It’s such a warm, delicious smell to come home to. Curry and roast dinners are my favourite “welcome home” smells. :)
Jac arranged chopsticks, spoons, chilli (freshly chopped and sambal) and soy sauce on a tray, all ready to go.
The chilli was mostly for Charlene (Jac had a little, I didn’t have any). I’ve mentioned before Charlene is a chilli hero – Jac and I are chilli wusses. We both like the flavour and bite that chilli adds to dishes, but neither of us can tolerate much heat. The chopped fresh chilli came from our garden – I don’t know what exact varieties they are, but one’s a big chilli and the other is very small (like cili padi).
After a few mouthfuls, she decided she needed more chilli. She added most of the chopped big chilli. “Mmm, good,” she said.
After a few more mouthfuls she added the chopped small chilli. After tasting again, she looked at us sheepishly and asked shyly, “Do you mind if I use up most of the chilli?” “No problem!” we beamed, “Use it all if you like!” As far as chilli eating goes, I shall live vicariously through Charlene! She stirred the rest of the fresh chopped chilli into her laksa. I must admit I rather enjoyed watching Charlene’s soup level get lower while its colour got more intensely red. I’d love to see her do one of the Man V Food chilli eating challenges. I reckon she’d do very well.
As we ate our dinner, the cats watched from the one of their favourite spots, the ottoman. Well – Billy Lee had set up camp on the ottoman and was most comfortable. Along came Pixel, eager to snuggle up for the warmth. She jumped onto the ottoman and practically sat on top of Billy Lee so she could fit on. Billy Lee wasn’t so keen to share and was not at all impressed by this turn of events. Immediately after I took this photo, Billy Lee decided she’d had enough, slapped Pixel with her paw and pushed her off the ottoman. Poor Pixel. Because she’s much smaller than Billy Lee, Billy Lee’s the boss.
The Chilliz laksa paste is excellent. It’s a favourite among my family and friends. No, this is not a sponsored post – it’s a personal recommendation. :)
It’s been very cold lately (well, by Perth standards anyway). Laksa is perfect cold weather food – it’s soup, it’s curry, and it’s delicious!

Hey that didn’t take you very long! :) Know what i’m eating while reading this? Laksa flavoured instant noodles, with an egg. Plus chili powder, and chili flakes. Heh!
wow that is a lot of chili! I am super impressed :)
Wow.. my mouth is salivating in response to all that chili, but I think it’s cause I’m a chili wimp as well.
Lol @ Pixel almost sitting on Billy Lee and getting pushed off! :)
I think I’m going to have some mi goreng for breakfast!
My secondary school tuckshop make the best curry laksa ever. Aunty Alice used to put sambal on top of her laksa. But of course its not too pedas/hot for us school kiddies and cheap too. It was only 60 sen for a bowl of her noodles.
I’ve never had soup made with curry, it looks delish, and I have to mention I love the red furniture. :)
Charlene the Chili Girl! I think she should make that her title from now on ;) But seriously, that is a LOT of chili. I usually find that there’s enough heat in the curry itself! Your meal looks great. :D
Wei-Wei
It looks a little more like curry noodles than laksa. This looks delicious! I love curry noodles (like curry gravy, yellow noodles, hainan chicken and all that yummilicious stuff that you have sliced up into your noodles). But am deathly afraid of laksa (think its the cockles and kinda like the way it smells). It just doesn’t look that appetizing here in Singapore though my entire family loves it. Even more deathly afraid of Penang assam laksa! Haha!
The laksa looks just like what you get in restaurants. Well done Jac. What noodles did Jac use? This is what I’d call a bowl full of surprises, as you just don’t know what’s going to come up in your spoon next :-D
YUM. That is all. :-)
Yum! I love chilli! I like the Chilliz vegetable curry paste (I think that’s what it’s called…the blue one), I’ll have to check out the laksa one.
I always dump a large dollop of sambal chilli into my laksa, but I never ever add chilli padi to laksa. I love putting a few slices of chilli padi into fishball noodle soup, or prawn noodle soup though. And when my mum whips up her tasty gingery fish slice soup, I always load up on the fresh chillies. I am definitely no chilli wuss. It takes a lot to make me cry!
I love adding chili padi with kicap/soy sauce into my kuay teow thng. It will gives a little kick to the soup. But of course I didnt add a lot. Just a lil bit. I’m a chilli wuss.
Poor Pixel! But I had to chuckle a bit at the dark humour of the situation. ;-) [If there's such a thing as feline karma, Billy Lee is in for a few lessons in the next of her set of 9 lives...!]
The laksa looks interesting. Never had it, so can’t comment much for lack of taste/scent orientation.
I also love the color change that chili gives a bowl of soup! I have a medium tolerance for chili though, so mine always stays a reasonable shade of red.
I also loved the cat picture. You can definitely see annoyance on Billy Lee’s face… poor Pixel!
Hi!! I can so relate to Charlene! :) Was exactly like her and then one day, my body told me enuff is enuff. Since then I had to tone down on chillies unfortunately. Reading your post reminds me of ME :)
Charlene,
Breakfast of chilli heroes!
Lisa,
Heheheh, so are we.
Michelle,
The Pixel and Billy Lee scenario is typical. They do get on very well, but on occasion (such as this one) Billy is just not in the mood for a snuggle buddy.
Jac and I had mi goreng for breaky one morning last week. We like it with a Chinese omelette on top. So good.
flower,
60 sen for a bowl of laksa, what a bargain, eh?
AZ,
Curry soup is lovely and so comforting and good on a cold rainy day. All the furniture was originally not red – we got them refurbished with the red fabric. The couch was brown, the bar stools were green and the ottoman was blue! :D
Wei-Wei,
Sounds like a superhero name! It was a yummy dinner, and even more enjoyable hanging out with a friend.
manda,
Well, this is curry laksa! My mum likes to make assam laksa, but I prefer curry flavour to assam. We don’t have cockles with our laksa – which is good, as I don’t like cockles at all.
Gcroft,
We just used thin rice noodles and thick egg noodles we bought from the Asian supermarket – the kind you just soak in hot water before using in your dish.
Craig,
Hahaha, yes, yum!
Sam,
We haven’t tried the other Chilliz pastes, but given how yummy the laksa one is, I’m sure we will in future.
Cindy,
Yep. Next lifetime Billy will probably be the runt of the litter! She is really bossy. Pixel tries to fight back but almost always backs down. Curry laksa is really worth trying. I hope you get the opportunity one day.
Megan,
Yeah, it looks amazing, really fiery! Yes… Billy Lee often makes that face!
My Simple Food,
If I eat too hot chilli I get a terrible headache and then have to stop, so these days I know not to get even close to that point. I just enjoy my mild wussy chilli. :)
Wow, I never thought I would find someone who seems to, from what I can tell, have a love of all things curry that rivals my own! I think I’m in love with you. Or maybe just the curries you have on your site. Yeah, I think it’s the curry. You’re pretty awesome too though. ;)
Well…. you can now even get the full range of Chilliz Curry Paste in Germany, just lock in to the internetshop of TRASIA under http://www.trasia.de
