Mrs Mac’s limited edition meat lovers pie (product review)

A meat pie for breakfast on a chilly Saturday morning? I love pies and I love meat, so yes please! I love the smell of pastry, hot, fresh and golden-brown out of the oven. Note to self: stop breathing in that glorious hot pie smell – hurry up, take the photographs then EAT!

Mrs Mac's limited edition meat lovers pie

The Mrs Mac’s Limited Edition Meat Lovers pie features a rich meaty, spicy gravy with four meats: chunky steak, bacon, cabanossi and pepperoni. This really is a pie for meat lovers. I was surprised to discover that the gravy had a hint of chilli in it, which I really liked – but Jac said she’d have preferred a less spicy pie. Personally, I thought the chilli had a significant enough presence that it should’ve been mentioned on the front of the pie packaging (it wasn’t). So be warned, it’s not chilli hero hot, but if you really don’t like chilli/spicy food you may not like this pie. We both love a chunky meat pie, and the chunkiness of the meat in the Meat Lovers pie was so very satisfying, visually as well as to eat.

I ate my pie with tomato sauce. I’ve written about my favourite food smells before, many involving bacon. Another of my favourite food smells is that distinctive smell of hot meat pie – the smell of pastry, brown gravy and tomato sauce. The gravy was finger-suckingly tasty, so good I didn’t leave a drop behind on my plate.

The Meat Lovers pie is the third of a series of limited edition pies that have been released this winter as part of Mrs Mac’s It’s All About The Pie campaign. The Meat Lovers pie is available during June and August, so if you like the look of it, you’d better try one quick! Maybe if there’s enough interest, they’ll decide to make it part of their regular range (hint hint, Mrs Mac’s ;)). I plan to have at least another before the end of August!

Thanks to Mrs Mac’s for sending Meat Lovers pies for us to try.

Other posts featuring meat pies

As you can see from the list below, there have been lots of pie posts – and these aren’t even all of them! I really love meat pies and chicken pies.

Here’s a confession/fantasy: I’d love to be a judge in the meat pie category of the Royal Show. I’d be happy to extend my tasting services to the sausage roll and pasty categories too. Jac would love to judge the pickles and preserves! What category would you like to judge at your local fair/show?

Mmmm, meat pie is so delicious! I especially love big chunks of meat :) I hate it when it’s tiny itty bitty bits… why don’t you just have ground beef pie?! But this pie just sounds so good… :D

I’m such a potato fiend…where are the chunks of potato in that meat pie? ;-( That would be a nice early-morning aroma. Bet it was delicious! Ketchup on? I should think that’d clash with the spices within, but if you like it that’s all that matters. :-) (Ketchup and spices are very “iffy” when combined, to my taste buds).

“What category would you like to judge at your local fair/show?”

Cakes. :-D

I don’t think there’s a potato salad category, but if there were…that’d be next!

I myself never refuse a chicken pot pie! We don’t have pies like you guys; but, I make my own sometimes. If the smell of food could be put in a spray bottle, it would outsell all the lemony and piney ones, hands down!

Am not a huge pie fan but those pictures are slowly changing my mind!
Have just finished reading a book by an English food write ‘Eating for Britain by Simon Majumdar’, he was excited to get the chance to be a judge in a pie competition, when he arrived it turned out he was judging vegetarian pies! His reaction was probably similar to what yours would have been! He he!

There are several restaurants that serve chicken pot pies here in Arizona, one of my favorites is from KFC. What category would I like to judge at our local fair? Indian fry bread! To be more exact an Indian fry bread with beans, cheddar cheese, and salsa, or maybe the Indian taco with ground beef, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese, and salsa. Then again maybe the Indian fry bread with honey or powered sugar… :0) It’s all good!

I have to say Meat Pies are one of my all time most satisfying foods, and I love trying them wherever I go.

Beefys (a sunshine coast local franchise) are inscredible…

But I have found that having become such a pie fiend, and having tried so many amazing pies, that I get let down so often. Do you find this? It can be really disappointing.

OOOOOOH A PIE.

It’s about 1140pm now, I had a late meeting and got home around 1045 after failing to hail a cab several times, and I’m a little hungry. I need me a big fat meat pie!

That said, I would so love to judge the scones category. Although I think I would feel sick after all the cream and jam and dough. So, pies for me too. Savoury always trumps sweet. A curry puff category would be perfect, actually. Or sausage. Or french fries. I love these naughty foodie dreams.

Oh man…I could go for one of those right now. They’re not so readily accessible to me though where I live………pity…
The pictures you have of the curry tiger pie make it look like the winner out of the bunch that you posted XD.
At a fair I would definitely like to judge some kind of meat……beef for sure, probably steak!!!

Unmentioned chili sucks for wusses like me!

Exactly! I have no issue with chilli or peppery flavours, but I think they need to be more upfront about them, rather than assume everyone will like them.

Wei-Wei,
I don’t mind minced beef in pies, as long as the gravy tastes good, there’s a decent meat to gravy ratio and the gravy is not too runny.

Cindy,
I’d love some potato in it too, but generally you won’t find chunks of potato in commercially made meat pies. The tomato sauce/ketchup + pie combo is very popular here among meat pie lovers – it’s not just me having weird taste! :D You have to try it to appreciate it, I think! Mmm, I think I’d like to judge cakes but my preference would be for savoury categories first.

kathy,
Oh yes – can you imagine food smells in a spray bottle? Yum yum yum.

kissy,
Heheh. Vegetarian pie judging would still be better than no pie judging! But yes, I would’ve been disappointed initially when I realised they were not meat pies.

Iris,
I would miss pies dreadfully if I ever had to live in a land of no pie. We made meat pies in cooking class at school. They were pretty yummy. My mum still uses that same recipe to this day (though she doesn’t make them often).

WhiskeyJac,
I’d love to be fed homemade pies with tea too. That’s a nice image/thought…

AZ,
Ooh, judging Indian fry bread sounds yummy! I’d be right there next to you!

Bryan,
Mwahahahahahahaaa. What are you insinuating about my eating habits? :P

Lisa,
Cool, hope he likes them!

Rebecca,
Me too. Whenever we travel anywhere around the country I make sure to check out the local bakery. Yes, many times pies have been disappointing. Pastry too dry, or not too much gravy not enough meat, or gravy too runny… I wouldn’t have thought it was that difficult to make a reasonably good pie, but apparently it is. It makes the good ones all the more special and enjoyable.

Dea,
We often have frozen ones so we can feed such inconvenient cravings! :D I’d love a curry puff category! Oh yes, these kinds of dreams are fun to think about. Me, having naughty foodie dreams? Nooo not me! >:P

Megan,
That’s good!

Kagenosuke,
If you ever visit AU, make sure meat pies are on your list of foods to try! Oh yes – the curry tiger is pretty special. I wish I could get them here in Perth, but I can only enjoy them when in Sydney. Hahaha, after pickles and preserves, I’m sure Jac would also like to judge steak.
