Just SPAM and white bread

July 23, 2010

in Home cooking, Reflections

I really wanted a SPAM sandwich. Just SPAM, fried to crispy on the outside, with fresh thickly sliced soft white bread. No lettuce, no mayonnaise, no butter on the bread, nothing else whatsoever. It was so good, exactly what I wanted. One of life’s simple pleasures. What’s your simple pleasure?

Mine is very similar…
fresh white bread, but with lots of marj, panfried Hands Austrian Salami (when you can find it), and tomato sauce.
Myy other favourite is fresh white bread, again, lots of marj, grated cheddar cheese, thinly sliced tomato with salt and (the only occasion I like) pepper from the shaker.

I’m sure there are more, but off the top of my head I’d have to say instant noodles, but the proper Chinese ones not the normal supermarket ones. (BTW It seems in Oz you can get decent noodles in the supermarket, I’m referring to South African supermarkets.)

Yes, the range of noodles (including Asian brands) available in supermarkets is pretty good here. But when I buy my favourite Maggi chicken flavour instant noodles I always buy them from the Asian supermarket – the Maggi noodles from Malaysia, rather than Australia. The Malaysian ones seem to have a better texture. I find they are more tightly curled (which I prefer) and the broth tastes better than Maggi noodles from Woolies and Coles etc. I also buy my Indomie Mi Goreng by the carton from the Asian supermarket, which works out much cheaper than by the packet from Woolies or Coles.

Guilty pleasures for me are : Off the top of my head.

Chicken Parmesean
Alfredo noodles
Chicken Men Fei
watermelon mixed with cheddar and cottage cheese (don’t ask.. so good)
Cheesecake with homemade strawberry jam.

These are what I can think of right now. I’m sure there are more but I’m just tired .

“watermelon mixed with cheddar and cottage cheese (don’t ask.. so good)”

That sounds interesting; cool, refreshing, mix of textures. I might give it a try!

shirin,
Ooh, I’ve never had instant noodles with a squeeze of lemon on top. My first girlfriend liked to cook up Maggi instant noodles, drain them (served without the broth), then add some butter and a splash of soy sauce. It was strange but surprisingly quite good.

Fried egg on a hash brown for breakfast..
Tomato and red onion sandwich with loads of cracked pepper for lunch.
Sour cream mixed with hot chili/garlic sauce made to dip consistency and slathered on cooked pappadums. It’s yum…really :-D

Not even a teensy bit of chilli sauce?

I quite like butter on digestives. My mother taught me that combo. There are many more but this is the simplest I can think of. Oh, and Spam and rice. :D

Su-Lin,
I rarely eat chilli sauce on anything! :)
Oh yes, I like butter on a milk arrowroot biscuit or two. With a cup of tea.

Fresh white bread straight from the bakery with lots of butter & vegemite.

Or the same bread made into a sandwich with cold roast chicken and lots of mayo.

Seems white bread is a common feature in simple pleasures.

Yes, interesting, isn’t it? I like other breads and probably eat multigrain most out of all the breads, but plain old white bread always hits the spot. :)

Left over cold rice with hot green tea poured on it, and a can of tuna with soy sauce and wasabi. I crave the stuff! Mostly for breakfast!

My simple pleasure would be bacon and rice. Crispy fried bacon, served with freshly cooked, white rice, preferably right from the rice cooker. Sometimes I add nori and make it into bacon onigiri but just bacon + rice is sooooooo good. I also love cubes of cheddar cheese dipped in sugar. It sounds strange but I love it.

I love bologna on oatmeal bread and yellow mustard. My mum always packed them when we went to the beach. The taste takes me right back to my childhood! Add a bag of chips and an icy cold Coke and I’m a happy girl!

Umm..

Freshly baked french-loaf (those fat, crispy on the outside, loafy on the inside type) – just have it plain

Maggi Mee – Assam Laksa / Curry

White bread with salami, pepperoni and picnic ham slices, “undressed” and stacked like Eiffel Tower

My simply pleasures… Absolute must haves, especially if it were my last supper (or breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea-time etc…)

Right now for lunch (while reading and typing this), I’m having white rice, clear vegetable and fishball soup, accompanied by a piece of fried fish…. makes me feel like a 3 year old all over again :)

Mmm, I have a lot of simple pleasures:
-Dill pickles straight from the jar
-Instant ramen noodles
-Salami (by itself)
-Waffles you make in the toaster
-Brie cheese, either by itself or with smoked salmon
As you can see, I love salty things!

My favorite simple snack is Triscuits and extra sharp Cheddar.

Funny coincidence: I posted about a similar meat-experience today on my blog…

http://jpv206.wordpress.com/2010/07/22/my-kingdom-for-a-fried-egg/

A few weeks ago a Brit friend of mine posted appauling news on my facebook that Hawaiians make sushi with Spam… shocking news, since a lot of my friends are Hawaiian, most of my non-Hawaiian friends back in Seattle are all familiar with spam musubi!

Mmm, spam musubi…

Wow, I think I might be the first person to mention fruit! I love frozen chunks of watermelon or banana, even in winter.

My favourite thing at the moment is to mix a sachet of Jarrah frothy hot chocolate with about 300ml of water and freeze it overnight, then leave it in the fridge to defrost slowly during the day. I crunch my way through the ice/liquid after dinner.

I started doing this while I had a cold and a really sore throat…

Maybe because fruits, on its own, is not comfort food to most :)

Just my guess. I love fruits, but they’re not exactly something i crave for. Heh!

I found out from a naturopath this weekend that craving ice is a sign of iron deficiency!

Also realised after a late night out on Friday that we have a pattern of stopping at Macca’s or Fast Eddy’s on the way home for something greasy and savoury like a BLT!

Beautiful bread especially. Looks like it’d make a *fine* French Toast. My simple pleasure…not quite as simple as your sandwich: Cold chopped chicken or turkey on white bread with smear of butter, sprinkle of salt/pepper. And an ice-cold Diet Pepsi or orange juice to wash it down…

Mi goreng with plenty of chilli flakes, washed down with a cup of hot Earl Grey tea to make it burn so good.

And good mayo (not Kraft!) on toast.

Toast with gooey peanut butter. I slather on the peanut butter, stick it in the toaster for awhile and it comes out melted and gooey and delicious. The only way I ever like peanut butter.

Soft boiled eggs with dark soy and black pepper, with kaya toast for dipping. A cheap and delicious start to weekends at the local coffee shops.

A piping hot char siew pao.

Fresh tropical fruit.

And hot gooey sunny side up eggs on piping hot rice with kikoman! Ahhh so simple and so gooooooood.

I have two – the first is parmesan toast. Thick white bread (called Texas Toast here in the US) brushed with melted butter, then dusted with fresh, finely grated parmesan cheese. Toast just the cheese side until brown. Soooo good.

The second is Pastina. Tiny pasta (most common are the little stars, but I prefer the kind shaped like a melon seed) boiled in chicken stock until soft, then stir in a beaten egg and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese. I like this best when I don’t feel well – it’s not a soup, it comes out thick and custardy. If it weren’t so late here, I’d make some right now!

So many simple pleasures!

I love getting the Continnental pasta packets, in sour cream and chives. Cook it with proper full cream milk and butter (no lite milk and marge!) and chuck in some salt and a tin of John West chili tuna.

I also like the Satay Rice, with the same tuna added. Ive lived off these for yearss!!

Plastic cheese singles are something I got back into a while back too!

* Dipping Arnotts Savoury shapes in full fat philidelphia – EVIL DELICIOUS!

* Fresh warm crusty bread with sesame seeds and lashings of butter.

purringgirl,
Oh yes, I love Kraft singles! Haven’t eaten any for like, over 10 years (really)! I love to fold it in half and again and again until I have a pile of squares (like 1.5cm squares) which I then eat one by one. I also like a Kraft single on a piece of white bread, microwaved just to warm the bread and start the cheese melting.

corned beef (tinned) fried rice
egg and soldiers

Another of my favourite simple pleasures is a dinner I make for myself on evenings Jac is out at hockey: rice, Sirena sliced tuna in chilli oil, and corn kernels. I could eat that combo every week!

And of course, I love love love fried SPAM and egg with rice.
