A fun weekend dinner! Jac seasoned turkey breasts with salt and pepper then panfried them. She lightly toasted hot dog buns, then added mixed lettuce, a little mayonnaise and the turkey breasts to make sandwiches. She served the sandwiches with sliced fresh tomato, cucumber, carrot sticks and a handful of potato crisps. It looked like a meal you’d serve a little kid! Fiona, you’ve made the comment before that I’m like feeding a little kid – I guess this is further evidence to that! :P
I was eager to bite into my juicy turkey breast sandwich. Jac had toasted the hot dog buns to a perfect chewiness. Why hot dog buns, you ask? They just happened to be left over in the fridge and Jac wanted to use them up. We didn’t have wieners, but we had turkey. But I could smell something else cooking… something that smelled delicious!
Jac had made a garlic pizza! She used a pre-made thin pizza base, drizzled olive oil, cracked fresh black pepper and salt and sprinkled fresh garlic on top, then baked it in the oven until the pizza base was crispy and the garlic browned and fragrant. It smelled fantastic!
Just a little reconfiguration on the plate to fit a couple of slices of garlic pizza. No cutlery required. It was a tasty and fun meal. I think I smiled the whole time I was eating it.
What “kids meal” do you enjoy eating as an adult?

I eat a lot of soft-boiled eggs with soldiers. I’m a little more grown-up about it than I used to be, but its still no fun if you don’t dip all the toasts in the lovely soppy yolk.
Vero,
I love love love soft-boiled eggs with soldiers! But funnily enough I didn’t eat eggs and soldiers until I was an adult!
I loved mac n cheese as a child – although I must say that my current version is probably more ‘adult’ than ‘kid’ :)
Same here.. My mom used to put only half the packet of “cheese” so when I moved out for College and made it myself with ALL the “cheese” it was a real discovery and has been a favorite ever since! Add any meat and veggie and youve got yourself a meal! My favorite is bacon and green onions. yum!
Lisa,
I like mac and cheese too. I really like the stuff that comes in the blue Kraft box as well as mac and cheese made by my sister Juji. Both are treats I really enjoy.
Dallya,
When I moved out of home for the first time my flatmate and I used to eat a lot of mac and cheese. We too liked to add stuff to it, like bacon or ham. And, through my influence, SPAM. :)
That looks sinful but so good for the soul all at once :D
I’m also a big fan of gooey egg soldiers
gigglesigh,
Haha, another gooey egg and soldiers fan! We are everywhere!
Sometimes I like to fix a big version of what I feed my buddy…given I can eat whatever he is eating. :D
jetgirl,
If I was a mum I would totally do that too. But you’d have guessed that already. ;)
Oh, I definitely still enjoy PB and J! I haven’t had that for a while since we’re out of J, but I think some reliving is in order :D Oh yeah, and I think that I DEFINITELY need to try that garlic pizza. It sounds like awesomely glorified garlic bread :D
Wei-Wei
Wei-Wei,
It is like a fancy garlic bread, yes! We had a cheesy chewy version at lunch at the Broken Hill Hotel last year that was delicious.
Mmmm! :-) My fav “kids’ meal”…would be Chef Boyardee pizza mix & sauce fixed into a cheeseburger style pizza (the scent of the unbaked dough and the tinned sauce bring back memories). With gooey melted slices of Velveeta cheese on top. My mother often made that on cold autumn/winter evenings. Served with cold ketchup on the side. ;-)
Cindy,
That sounds really good, especially on a cold night! I would totally eat that.
I love eating yogo with chicken nuggets and a little choc milk. Have it at work most days and people call me the office child! I’m 45 by the way.
Also love fish finger mornay, party pies and mayonaise on my cheese sticks. Same stuff I’ve been eating for the last forty years! LOL
Yours looks good but would probably be a bit healthier without the crisps! Wouldn’t be as good though!!!!! YUM
I’m 45 too. Eat whatever I enjoy (within moderation). My sis-in-law occasionally teases me about liking cookies; well yeah, they make me happy. ;-p Give me cookies and milk any day, it tickles the inner child!
Colin,
Ohhh I love chicken nuggets – in fact, on the weekend when I was feeling peckish I had some Inghams nuggets for a snack. We always have a pack of “Family nuggets” in the freezer. :) I love choc milk but can’t drink much of it because I get very gluggy (I am somewhat lactose intolerant – can take some dairy but have to be careful how much and some things have a very bad effect on me – like choc milk). We love fish fingers and party pies and party sausage rolls too – if it’s finger food/kids food Jac knows I will absolutely love it. I’m very easy to please, really.
You know, I made the same comment to Jac about the crisps! We laughed and ate them anyway. :)
Cindy,
Jac is 44 and loves milk and cookies too. She even pours the milk into a little plastic tumbler, the same ones we use for kids when they come to visit. :)
Always a soft boiled egg with soldiers … I always feel like a little kid when I have them .. but do I enjoy it .. hell yes …
justonemorebite,
It’s just such a comforting, pleasurable meal to eat, isn’t it?
The crisps with your sandwich take me back to lunches eaten with my family in England, where a sandwich wasn’t quite complete without a side of crisps. I never quite understood this but munched my fair share regardless.
I guess my biggest kiddy treat is an ice cream on a stick. My freezer is never without icecreams on sticks. Funny Faces would be more kiddly but why have icypoles when you can have ice creams?
Your ice cream treats reminds me of another: Push Ups. In the States, that’s a cylindrical bar of orange sherbet on a stick. Encased in a very light cardboard tube (white w/polka dots), with a peel-off top. Just push up on the plastic handle and start licking at the sherbet. Love those, the ultimate sick-day comfort food. As a kid and today…
Conor,
I prefer ice creams to icypoles for sure. Oh Funny Faces, I remember when they were all the rage in primary school. Funny Faces, Frosty Fruits and Billabongs. In those days I was partial to grape flavoured Hubba Bubba bubble gum too. :) In high school everyone loved a Calippo. When Paddlepop did their Lick-a-Prize promotion my dad would buy boxes of Paddlepops in the hope between all the kids we would lick our way to the grand prize. We never did, LOL. Oh and you know what else I haven’t had since I was a kid? Neapolitan ice cream.
Cindy,
As a child when I was sick my Grandma would never allow me to eat ice cream. That’s why being sick as an adult is so much better! If I want ice cream or a burger and fries, I can have it!
I’ve mentioned my love of bologna sandwiches before, but, I also love macaroni with butter and parmesan cheese. Sometimes now I make pasta with olive oil and garlic. Nothing takes the place of good old macaroni with butter and cheese! The Kraft cheese, not fancy fresh!
kathy,
Yep – Kraft cheese has that special taste that fancy cheese just doesn’t have. :)
I love kids’ food, actually.
Spaghetti & meatballs, cheese and vegemite toasties, mini anything (muffins, quiches, meatballs, sausages)….I love them all!
But the one thing I really loved when I was a child and rarely eat anymore is this potato patty my aunt used to cook for me whenever I stayed over at her place. I don’t quite know what went into it…but it was potatoey and savoury and delicious with ketchup.
Dea,
Yep – everything you have listed above, I love! My mum makes pork and potato patties – she used to cook them as a treat when she had a day off and we would eat them fresh and hot out of the pan with tomato sauce.
Kraft Macaroni and Cheese… ohh I love it! but I feel like a 5 year old sitting on the couch eating it…
Bryan,
Haha, you’ll see above I have mentioned my love for Kraft mac and cheese! I love sitting on the couch eating it too – just me, the bowl of mac and cheese and a spoon. I eat it slowly to make it last as long as possible.
I love pigs in a blanket (hot dogs wrapped in crescent roll dough and baked). I have been experimenting with different types of sausages like polska keilbasa etc to see how they taste. I use my kids as an excuse to make these…yum!
