Coffee Club, Cannington

in Eating out, Reflections, Restaurants

We ate brunch at the Coffee Club at Carousel Shopping Centre recently. The Coffee Club is a franchise chain in Australia and New Zealand that serves coffee, cake/sweets and light meals.

Jac was in the mood for a bacon and egg sandwich, so she ordered the gourmet bacon and egg Turkish roll (AU$12) – bacon, fried egg, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cheese and barbecue sauce in toasted Turkish bread. The egg was overcooked but Jac enjoyed the sandwich. The bacon hanging out of the sandwich in this photo reminds me of the tongue sandwiches Patty and Selma served to Bart and Lisa in an early Simpsons episode (anyone else remember that? It’s the episode called Homer Alone, where Marge goes to stay at Rancho Relaxo).

Gourmet bacon and egg Turkish roll

I ordered the turkey and bacon club sandwich (AU$16), a triple decker sandwich with turkey breast, crispy fried bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion and cheese on toasted white bread, served with a “garnish salad”.

Turkey and bacon club sandwich

The garnish salad consisted of a handful of mixed greens, cucumber, tomato, red onion and curls of carrot and beetroot, all drizzled with a light tangy vinaigrette. It all tasted fresh and crisp but I remarked to Jac how much the flavour of fresh beetroot reminds me of dirt. “An earthy flavour?” she suggested. “Nope, just plain old dirt!” I said. :)

Salad garnish

My club sandwich was delicious. The bread was toasted perfectly – crisp on the outside but still chewy and soft in the middle. I hate being served hard toasted bread because I always cut my palate on it as soon as I bite into it. Hard toasted and hard baked breads are dangerous, dangerous I tell you! If I had a complaint about the sandwich it was that there was more bacon than turkey in it, making bacon the dominant flavour overall. That’s not a terrible thing by any means, but I’d have enjoyed 50-50 turkey and bacon.

I’d eat at the Coffee Club again for sure. Next time I want to try the “lifestyle chicken fillet burger”.

Thoughts about foods that repeat on you

As we ate our sandwiches (I tried Jac’s sandwich and she tried mine), we noted the presence of red onion in both sandwiches. Raw red or white onion can taste good in a sandwich or salad. But I’m not so fond of the aftertaste that won’t go away even if I brush my teeth, chew parsley or minty gum, or eat peppermints. And the onion burps – enough said! We refer to foods/flavours like that as foods that “repeat on you.” For example, Jac likes sour cream and chive potato crisps but I don’t because they always repeat on me – incidentally, that’s why I like boring original flavour potato crisps best. I’m not necessarily talking about foods that smell bad – more that they come back to haunt you after you’ve eaten them! If you’re not from Australia, do you use that phrase or do you have a different way to describe foods with flavours that linger?

What are your favourite foods that repeat on you? :P

Let me start with a few of our favourites:

  • Indomie mi goreng (we are big Indomie fans, but in our household we refer to Indomie affectionately as “stinky noodles” or simply “stinkies”)
  • Jac’s favourite potato crisp flavours – barbecue, sour cream and chive, and cheese and onion (there’s a fancy version of this she likes – “vintage cheddar and red onion”, very tasty but oh so much repeating afterwards! :))
  • Pizza
  • And I’ve mentioned before, Jac always orders her burgers from Hungry Jack’s with heavy lettuce and onion. I find the standard amount of onion in a Whopper provides more than enough “repetition” afterwards, but Jac just loves her onions. :)

We were in KL recently on holiday and we ate at a gorgeous place for dinner. For dessert I had durrian icecream (the waiter whe he took my order actually said to me ‘You know what Durrian is , right??’ I grew up in Singapore – so yes!) It was really lovely home made icecream and the flavour was out of this world…. but burps of durian over coffee the next day? SERIOUSLY BAD. :-&

Oh oh DURIAN repeats so bad. I mean, it’s a food that can repeat in a fridge even though it’s been 3 days since you took it out. But chilled durians are da bomb. :D
I have a love-hate relationship with garlic, especially garlic chilli dips. Tastes good, but burps not so well.

LOL oh yes, durian repeats. But I love durian so am willing to put up with them. :)

Jessie, You’ve totally made me crave durian ice cream! Instead, I shall have to be content reminiscing over this old post – durian gelato ecstasy. :D

I want to go to Rancho Relaxo :(

My most recent unpleasant food-repeating experience was following the truffle degustation at Incontro a couple of months ago. Truffle burps galore. Quite disturbing, but I guess quite gourmet burps too.

Yes, I need to go to Rancho Relaxo right now.
I have never eaten enough truffle in a sitting to suffer the aftermath of truffle burps. I don’t know if that is a good or bad thing!

Thanks, Anita. I’ve been chuffed with the results using the new camera. And once I actually learn what all the controls and settings do, I reckon I will do even better. :)

Thank you! I’ve been trying to convince my friend who loves beetroot that it tastes like dirt! she doesn’t believe me but at least im not alone on that opinion lol :-)

Haha, yep! My opinion is that it tastes like dirt and it just so happens that some of us don’t like the taste of dirt, while other people (apparently) don’t mind it when it comes in the form of a beetroot! I think most people don’t want to admit they like the taste of something that tastes like dirt. :)

Yes we refer to it as “repeat” as well.

Meatballs tend to do it to me. Which is a problem because I love meatballs. I had the problem especially with the IKEA ones which is going to be a real problem since I like them so much! :-)

And I also don’t like raw onion in my food for the same reasons.

Yes, meatballs do that to me too. When Jac makes meatballs she always uses lots of garlic so they taste wonderful but repeat terribly! Still, I love them and it doesn’t stop me pigging out on them.

Bell peppers and eggs ALWAYS repeat on me! It’s not nice when I have eggs for breakfast then something sweet like toast with jam… then I burp and it all smells like eggs and it’s a little bit gross. But onions are a big one, too. And – I think that I would have been glad to have LOTS of bacon ;)

Wei-Wei,
LOL yes – the dreaded egg burps! A boy I knew in primary school used to eat these sandwiches for lunch: sliced fresh green capsicum (bell pepper) with sliced raw onions. They were his favourite, much to everyone’s disgust! But then, having said that, he was the same boy who told us all he tried eating dog biscuits one weekend because he wondered what they tasted like. :P I mean, sure, do that if you’re curious – but telling everyone all about it? I wouldn’t be doing that!

Fiona,
Heh, not good when you’re both repeating in each other’s presence! In the car is the worst! LOL.

Wow, look at the photos! Instant gratification! :)

Foods that repeat – chicken rice. The breath. Food itself is oh so good though. Mmmmm

Charlene,
YES! How could I forget chicken rice! Mega repeats! Though I find the worst of the repeating comes from the garlicky chilli sauce they serve with it.

The Coffee Club is everywhere in Brisbane and I find them overpriced (especially their coffee!) so I don’t like going there. However, the sandwiches do look yummy. :) Onions and hard boiled eggs are definitely ‘repeat’ items! I try to avoid onions whenever I can, especially raw ones, but I love eggs too much!

Probably shouldn’t admit it, but I’ve never watched an episode of “The Simpsons.” Probably makes me a bad American. ;-p As for foods that “repeat on you,” an uncle used to quip: “Bring it back up again and we’ll vote on it!”

Foods which do that to me: Chili (soup). Beef (whether burgers or steak; which is why I now seriously avoid beef). Soy-based cereals (once was enough; highly unpleasant). Red onion. Your sandwiches look good, but I’d have to nix the red onion.

Karaage chicken from Taka’s is a menace for burps! And don’t watch a movie after eating foods that “repeat” afterwards… cause the burp travels downwards and hits the person around you. LOL! Not pleasant!

A slice of Haystack pizza covered in Sriracha sauce. Yeah, I can always taste it the next day, but it’s worth every second. So nice, it burns you twice!

I call it the aftermath….

Beans and garlic both do it for me… so I absolutely will not eat either one of them – I know how much you love garlic anything so forgive me ;-)

I can’t stand bad breath or constant burping… so gross… the pleasure to eat them is not worth the pain later…

Onions! I love raw onions; but, if I have something on the next morning, forget it! I feel like the whole next morning I have to keep brushing my teeth and chewing mints. I forgo the onions and enjoy them when I have time to recover. :)

I have been a lover of garlic since I first started cooking. My parents would come home after work, inhale and say ‘Jess has been cooking!’.

But recently, the garlic has been working against me, in the form of repetition. Too much of a good thing?

Indomie indeed!! I’ve never really termed them as “repeats”..but basically just food that “stays” in my mouth for as long as it lasts… *urk* Chicken rice…durian…cempedak…onion…garlic…maggi mee (any flavor at all for that matter!)…

Sapphira,
I’m sure I will eat there again, but it wasn’t so amazing it will become a regular eating place for us – especially when there are so many places out there to try. I love eggs too – in fact, Jac in the kitchen right now making savoury eggs (devilled eggs). The smell of eggs and mayonnaise is making me want to sneak into the kitchen and steal some.

Cindy,
LOLs at your uncle! :) I’ve been a Simpsons fan since the first season, though I find the more recent episodes are becoming too silly and are often disjointed. Sometimes I will pick the onions out of a sandwich or salad. When I do, I will just pass the onions straight over to Jac.

Michelle,
Yep. It’s great to hear there are others who agree!

Katstar,
I’ve eaten the karaage chicken from Taka – I love it! But yes, it can repeat too. Agreed, eating repeat foods before going to the movies is not very considerate!

Chef To False Metal,
Eww! Hahahaha. That’s the thing, isn’t it? The foods that repeat taste so good it’s worth experiencing the repetition afterwards.

Bryan,
That’s why I always have mint gum on me. :) But if I know I will be doing certain things e.g. job interview, presentation at work, meetings, going to a party etc I won’t eat garlic or other smelly/repeat foods.

kathy,
Exactly! I do the same (see reply to Bryan above).

Jessica,
Jac’s mum doesn’t like the smell of garlic on people and is very sensitive to it – she will always comment on it if there’s a hint of garlic smell on anyone! I’ve become quite self-conscious about it and always make sure to brush teeth and chew mints etc after eating it (well, I was always careful to chew gum etc after eating garlic but now even more so).

Peky,
I haven’t eaten much cempedak in my lifetime but everything else you’ve listed has me nodding in agreement. They’re all things I love though!

I’ve eaten here a lot but I’m not happy. There seems to have bee a lot of staff unhappiness. Twice I’ve been there when they’ve been swearing at each other. I also found the staff can be rude (not all of them) but a couple of the girls who make coffee.

The foods good but the quality of the coffee is unpredictable.
