We had brunch recently at the Miss Maud Pastry House at Carousel Shopping Centre in Cannington. Jac ordered at the front counter while I found us a seat at one of the booths at the back. There are lots of pastries and cakes on display to choose from but we prefer to order the hot dishes, sandwiches or salads from the cafe menu. It was busy but our drinks and food didn’t take long to arrive. We each ordered a sunrise (AU$4.85), which consists of orange juice, pineapple juice, lemonade and “a touch of magic sunrise”, which I presume is raspberry cordial or grenadine. It’s a sweet, refreshing combination and probably our favourite drink to order when we go to Miss Maud. The sunrise drink reminds me of a drink we used to make for kids when I worked in hospitality – lemonade with a dash of grenadine to make a bright red fizzy drink we called a fire engine.
Jac ordered the smoked salmon Turkish bread sandwich (AU$13.95). The bread is lightly grilled and in the sandwich is smoked salmon, capers, cream cheese, red onion, mixed salad greens, tomato and Miss Maud dill mustard dressing.
I chose the chicken and bacon burger ($AU13.55) – a toasted bread roll with chicken, bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce and Miss Maud special mayonnaise. On the side was a tomato wedge, a couple of snow pea sprouts and one of my least favourite salad garnishes – grated carrot. I don’t know anyone who likes grated carrot. Tell me if you do! :P
The burger was pretty small but it was delicious! When I was a girl I thought food served with a toothpick flag was the epitome of fancy food. :)
Sometimes when we’re at the shops it’s nice to eat in a cafe such as this rather than the food court. Miss Maud gets pretty busy, of course, but you do get to escape temporarily from the bigger, noisier, busier food court crowd and the shopping trolleys.

I love their takeaway sausage rolls and pies, especially the chicken and vegetable pie, and the snack beef pie (slightly smaller than a full-sized one).

Miss Maud is famous for her Smorgasbord restaurant – I haven’t been for years. I think the last time was a big breakfast smorgasbord with my sister Juji before I began my PhD – late 2003 or so!
Miss Maud is also famous around here for her coffee bean poll. In the three or so weeks leading up to the election, customers at Miss Maud’s 18 outlets around Perth were invited to drop a coffee bean into the special beakers representing the major parties to indicate who they’d be voting for.
The 2010 Federal Election Miss Maud coffee bean poll results are in.

I like grated carrot! I’m always too lazy to do it myself, though, so rarely eat carrot at all (I usually don’t even bother to peel it, preferring just to give it a good scrub. Imagine all the chemicals and bugs I’m ingesting!).
love miss maud’s mushroom steak pie, they are yummy! You can buy the NQR (not quite right) ones at their bakehouse on Newcastle street in Northbridge on a saturday mornings between 7:30 and 10! Not pretty looking but the stuff tastes delicious.
Was the grated carrot raw or cooked? If it was raw, then… well, I don’t like raw carrots in general. There’s a sort of cold dish you can make with cooked grated carrots that involves blanching, then mixing with sesame oil, sesame seeds and salt. It’s delicious.

PS: I still can’t get over my camera jealousy. And the fact that I can’t win it because I’m not Australian. :(
I LOVE grated carrot! Especially in sandwiches, and on salads…. More for me if you hate it : D :D
I love grated carrot…coincidence….another Erin that loves grated carrot!! Hahahhah. How was the Smorgasbord like? Always wanted to try but never know if it was worth the price……
The Sunrise drink looks awesome. :-) Grated carrot…well, raw carrot upsets my stomach after a certain quantity of it. The only way I do like it though is in carrot-raisin salad. I’m not overly impressed with the sandwiches in the pics, but am curious as to other dishes offered by this restaurant; I’ll check their web site. :-)
i like grated carrot ;)
im impressed that you were served quickly at miss mauds. Last time i was there my friend and I waited 45 minutes for a toasted sandwich and a coffee, and the place was only half full :( oh well, hopefully it was just a one off but an experience like that can really turn you off a cafe/restaurant when the food a) wasn’t that great and b) expensive for what we recieved/ how long it took to revieve it!! That was in the city though… perhaps I’ll try another one sometime soon :)
I absolutely love grated carrot, even better when it’s mixed with a bit of pineapple. :)
Swedish hey? Do they do meatballs too, like IKEA? Mmm, that burger looks good anyway!
I like grated carrots too, it’s even one of the only way I like carrots.
But I like it in a salad with a lemony vinaigrette, and shaved fenel, or red onion, or something else for flavor.
I like grated carrot in a sandwich; but not on the side like that. It always looks kind of pitiful to me. I want carrots to be roasted and served with meat! Your lunch looks delicious.
Not a big fan of raw grated carrot (it seems more of an ingredient than a salad on its own!) Sometimes if we are eating a grilled chicken with moroccan spices i make a grated carrot salad with a dressing of chilli, cumin, garlic, honey, salt and squeezed orange juice which makes a bowl full of grated carrot disappear!
I was a bit worried about your bacon in the roll – it almost looked raw! But i know you love bacon so since you didn’t comment it must have been good!
hey TFP
I like Miss Mauds too. Old style but reliable too! I like the little ‘picnic’ sandwiches that come in take away packs. I Love grated carrot! Would never eat a raw carrot whole but I go nuts over it grated.
Great photos too :-)
Emma
Haha, so lots of you guys like grated carrot! :)
Erin,
I like raw carrot, but prefer it sliced into rounds or sticks. I love carrot sticks with French onion dip. I can eat a tonne of those.
Paul,
Oh yes! I forget about the Northbridge bakehouse! A friend of mine used to work there and she’d bring home slabs of cake and all kinds of delicious things. Oh yes – their steak and mushroom pie is great. I love all their pies!
Wei-Wei,
The grated carrot is raw. Mmm, that grated carrot dish you describe sounds yummy.
Kim,
Yes! Definitely more for you! :D
Erin W,
Hahaha, SNAP! The smorgasbord is good! As with all buffets it’s well worth it if you have a good appetite! At breakfast, they had pancakes as well as all the usual breakfast foods like bacon and eggs and tomato and mushrooms…. they also have pastries and fruit and smoked salmon, from memory.
Cindy,
I do like raisins, so I’d probably like carrot and raisin salad. I wouldn’t say the food is amazing at Miss Maud, but it’s always been pretty good when I’ve eaten there. I do love their pies a lot though. And they used to sell these awesome long skinny bread rolls called “flutes” – my favourite was the chicken and mayo flute – filled with roast chicken and a lovely rich creamy mayonnaise. Mmmm.

soph,
Ugh, 45 minutes! Not good. I agree, that would be a complete turn-off. I guess we’ve been lucky so far (or we’ve been to better run Miss Maud restaurants?).
Caroline,
Hmm, I Iike pineapple, so perhaps that would improve the grated carrot greatly. Sadly, no – they don’t do the meatballs. If they did, I’d be there every second week!
plume,
I think I prefer crunch, so my preference is for carrot sticks. :) I like carrots in a stir-fry or in a roast dinner. Grated is way way down in the list. :)
kathy,
Oh yes, roasted is one of the tastiest ways to cook/serve carrot! I LOVE it. Agreed, it does look a little sad on the plate like that with nothing but a tomato wedge.
Jessie,
That grated carrot salad sounds good. I think I saw something similar on Food Safari, which I thought looked pretty yummy. Don’t worry, the bacon wasn’t raw. It was good.
Thanks emma,
Oh yes, those sandwich packs are great. Jac loves those. I’d eat a raw carrot, but chopped into rounds or sticks. :)
Thanks for posting the links to previous posts, TFP. I did check the web site, but am sure your photos and comments will provide a lot more info. :-) I’m especially curious about breakfast items; it’s the best meal of the day. ;-)
They still do the flutes at the ones nearby me (Karrinyup, Warwick).. probably my favourite takeaway roll/baugette style, would be nice to see them at other places rather then just Miss Mauds. One each of the chicken and the smoked salmon… *drool*
Squee, cool! For some reason they don’t do them at Carousel any more – if so, it’s not as regular as it used to be as I haven’t seen them for sale whenever I’ve been there.
Grated carrot and grated cheese sandwiches! I would eat them every day if I could.
I was soooo happy when Subway added grated carrot to their salad choices – to me it lifts the freshness.
Alas I’m now wanting carrot and have none in the fridge *shakes her fist* =)
