Dinner – chicken and mushroom-filled savoury pancakes

August 23, 2010

in Home cooking

Jac made savoury pancakes filled with chicken and mushroom for dinner. They were tasty! I love pancakes and would happily eat them every week, savoury or sweet. Or savoury AND sweet – as you know, one of my favourite combos of all time is pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. What do you like to eat with your pancakes?

Chicken and mushroom filled savoury pancakes

We prefer thinner, crepe-style pancakes to fluffy flapjack-style pancakes – but I’ll happily eat any kind of pancakes any time. I don’t know why but ever since I was a kid, eating pancakes has always felt like a special treat.

Those crepes look great! I love savory fillings in crepes. For regular pancakes, I like bacon, sausage or ham. All three works, also! Good maple syrup and lots of butter. Fresh oj and good coffee. Heaven!

I’ve never thought of pancakes as savoury – I always thought that they would be naturally sweet (but now that I think about it, the sweetener usually goes on but not actually in the pancakes…) I guess it’s the same concept as crepes! Or… waffles?

Looks good. :-)

“What do you like to eat with your pancakes?”

If it’s crepe style, I like Swedish pancakes with lingonberry butter. If the fluffy flapjack type, just good ol’ butter and syrup; maybe a bit of peanut butter on the side too. And of course a tall glass of cold milk. ;-)

My favourite savory crepes are Crepes Miramar – stuffed with shrimp, chicken, fruit cocktail (really!) and a curry sauce made with celery, onion, apple, chicken broth and cream. They’re topped with hollandaise sauce.

Your crepes look yummy and I will have to try them.

Hi Ann,

I have been looking all over for a recipe for Crepes Miramar. They are my absolute favourite. Do you have a recipe you could forward to me?

Thank you.

Jan

The last time I had crepes they will filled with cooked apricots and topped with whipped cream in a small restaurant in Jerome, Arizona, they were delish! As for savory crepes, I don’t know if I’ve seen them offered in a restaurant, I think Americans always have sweet crepes, but I live in the southwest we’re not a sophisticated as the New York crowd :0) !

I love savoury crepes, especially with mushrooms and melty cheese. That has to be my favourite way of eating pancakes. But if I must have sweet pancakes, I like mine plain and simple, with butter and honey. Or with a scoop of ice cream. :)

The best pancake topping in the world is bananas foster sauce with big chunks of fresh banana! I would be big as a house if I ate that so… sadly… I don’t… it’s been ages since I have had a pancake…

kathy,
That sounds like heaven to me too. I love thick slices of ham, thrown into the fan and lightly fried on each side. Even better if it’s honey glazed ham. :)

Wei-Wei,
Yes – same kind of idea! But you can of course make flavoured pancakes, crepes or waffles – like chocolate pancakes made with cocoa, or even cheese and herb waffles with cheese and waffles actually in the waffle batter. :) So they can be savoury or sweet even before you add the toppings/accompaniments.

Cindy,
Either option would make a great photo! :D

Ann,
We would totally try crepes miramar! :D

AZ,
I’m not a big fan of apricots, but in a crepe with whipped cream… I could probably make an exception. :)

Dea,
Ooh yes, mushroom and cheese crepes would be wonderful. Jac likes simple pancakes with sugar and lemon. My simple is with maple syrup and nothing else.

Bryan,
Oh yes, I’ve heard about bananas foster but never had it. I don’t eat half the stuff I’d like to (though it may seem that I eat everything in sight)… because I would be the size of three houses by now if I did. :)

When I was younger all pancakes seemed to come with sugar and lemon juice. Now I know that just about anything goes in pancakes. Definitely an improvement.
Great blog.

When I was a child, cook always made pancakes with semolina rather than flour. They were beghrir, a type of moroccan pancake which looks like a normal pancake on one side but are all little bubbles on the other side. Lovely and melty – served with pomegranate or orange honey and cinnamon chopped nuts and always lashings of yoghurt, they remain my favourite comfort food! When it comes to crepes however – sweet mascarpone and raspberries are my ultimate filling.

Your love for the combination of savoury and sweet immediately made me think of a menu option that McDonalds offers here in Canada: McGriddles (I’m not sure if the golden arches in Australia has them?) I’ve never tried it but it’s a sandwich of bacon, egg, and cheese, only with maple-flavoured pancakes instead of a bun.

As for my favourite pancake toppings? Butter and strawberry jam =)

years ago i worked at Pancake Kitchen – a great old fashioned pancake place. it shut down years ago, but i always remember it being the top spot when ever sailors were in town. they used to make the best savory pancakes with buckwheat and served with a spicy mince somewhat similar to chilli con carne type sauce. they also did some great ones with grilled pineapple. Pancakes @ Carillion is a poor comparison as they’ve let their ingredients slip over the years. I perfer my homemade sweet pancakes made with eden valley biodynamic WA flour served with organic butter and organic maple syrup. there is nothing better!
