Dinner – Lenny pops, potato bake and leeks

September 6, 2010

in Home cooking

Jac was at the shops, looking for some dinner inspiration. She happened to walk past Lenards chicken shop, saw these things called “Lenny pops”, crumbed chicken on sticks, and knew straight away that I would like them. If it resembles kids’ food or fair food, it’s a pretty safe bet I’ll like it!

Lenny pops, potato bake and leeks

Jac served the Lenny pops with a creamy potato bake and baked leeks. She cooked everything in the oven. In general I’ve enjoyed Lenards’ chicken products but have sometimes found them on the salty side (and I say that as a person who likes her food well salted) – but this was a delicious and fun meal. I really enjoyed dipping, rolling and slathering the Lenny pops in the potato bake gravy, and they were good with tomato sauce too. Food really is much more fun on a stick!

And speaking of fair food, we won’t be able to go to the Canning Show this year because we’ll be in Canberra! Can any of you guys suggest where we should eat in Canberra?

“I really enjoyed dipping, rolling and slathering the Lenny pops in the potato bake gravy…” I’d be doing that too! Au gratin potatoes go with anything.

Canberra; I always automatically read it as “Cranberry.”

Hahaha, it would be cool to live in a city called Cranberry. Kind of like a a favourite cafe called Toast. Or as I live in hope, a cafe called Bacon.

kinda going off the tangent, but i like it hw u declare that its nt a sponsored post. It gets upsetting sometimes when u see ur fav bloggers get more ‘glammed up’ and then suddenly they r commercialised and all, changing their style of writing, the things they write about etc.

Tfp, noe that we love u for u and hw u have been so far, pls dun ever change or get too commercialised!!!

Those look yum!
I want to cook with leeks, but since I never have, the thought of it overwhelms me.

Come eat at my place :p it’s in Canberra.

Barring that – you have to try Kingley’s chicken on the theme of this post. ;)

While in Canberra, check out Silo Bakery/Cafe for French(ish) cuisine, pastries, amazing breakfasts and the best bread in Canberra. Brodburger burger van. Dobinsons does great bread, pastries, sandwiches and meals as well. Cornucopia is another great bakery/cafe option. Check out Debacle for fab pizza/massive beer list. Oh, and Pizza Arte, a great backyard pizza joint. Charcoal Grill is a good steak place that’s been around foreveeerrr. Tilley’s cafe and Gus’ are both Canberra institutions, and great for breakkie.

For fancier dining.. my favourites: Artespresso, Rubicon, Flint, Parlour, Chairman and Yip.

Arghh, I could go on and on. Sometimes I feel like I’m single-handedly keeping Canberra’s restaurants in business!!

Alternatively, come over to my place :p

But wait! There’s more!

Can’t believe I forgot… Rama’s Fijian Indian, which I’m lucky enough to have as my local Indian takeaway, is incredible, and pretty famous around Canberra (when giving people directions to my house, I just have to say ‘it’s near Ramas!’). Must eats – vegetable kofta, lamb korma, chicken korma, pumpkin and coconut roti parcels, vegetable pakoras, and as many breads and sides (especially the green beans, coconut and banana, and raita) as you can squeeze in!

A Bite to Eat is another local for me. Great meals all day. Interesting twists on classics and wonderfully eclectic.

If you feel like a nice little springtime drive out into the countryside, definitely check out Poachers’ Pantry. Absolutely lovely. Their store, full of meats and stuff from their smokehouse, is also great.

Pulp Kitchen is a favourite of mine for good, up-market comfort food with a bit of a twist.

My favourite Japanese place in Canberra is probably Iori. They now have a more casual off-shoot, Coo, but I’m yet to try it. Tasuke is another good little casual hole-in-the-wall type Japanese place.

Whew, okay, I’ll stop now. That should keep you well-fed for a while!! Enjoy your time in Canberra! :)

Ooh, that potato bake looks really good. But it would’ve left me with a tummy ache for sure. Creamy foods and I aren’t best of mates.

It’s Labor Day here in Fl. It’s pouring out. I actually don’t mind it. An excuse not to go to cookouts and snuggle in for catch-up reading and movie watching! Not that I’m anti social; but, sometimes staying home is just more fun. I made an experimental spaghetti sauce with linguicia sausage and I think I’ll make lasagna with it. Something about the spiciness of the sauce and the creaminess of the ricotta seems like it would compliment each other very well. I’ll let you know. As for your post, I love anything on a stick! Happy week!

I love your blog and all your family events! =)

If you ever find yourself in Chicago, IL let me know and I’ll take you and Jac eating!

You must go to the Chairman and Yip, if nowhere else – best Asian-style upmarket restaurant I’ve ever been to. Also, Boffins at the university is lovely – but maybe a little intimidatingly posh.

hy,
It is important to me that my writing remains honest and is a reflection of myself, my experiences and my opinions. So although there will be sponsored posts from time to time, whatever I write IS my opinion. This site has evolved naturally over the years and will continue to evolve. But it still reflects “me” and what I like to eat. I intend to keep it that way.

Sarah,
Jac doesn’t cook leeks very often – I think this was an experimental dish which worked out quite well. :)

sangeeta,
It was great! Jac took the leftovers to work the next day and enjoyed it very much.

Krissy,
Sorry, at this stage, no, I don’t have a recipe. Jac didn’t actually follow a recipe when she made it, so she would have to sit down and write out what she did. If she does sometime down the track, I will post it. She doesn’t tend to write her recipes down.

Fiona,
Is that an invitation? ;) Mmm chicken.

Lizzi,
Thanks for all the recommendations! A couple of people have suggested Iori and Chairman and Yip. It’s going to be a good eating trip, I think!

Dea,
I can’t eat a lot of cream/dairy myself, which is why I savoured this meal and left Jac the leftovers. :)

kathy,
I’m totally anti-social! I wish I had more time at home with nothing to do, but I always have blogging or processing photos or replying to comments/emails or chores or SOMETHING to do. I crave more nothing time!

Lila,
Cool! Will keep that in mind. Would love to visit Chicago (would love to visit most of the US). :)

Cheers, Jules. Chairman and Yip is definitely on the list.

Faye,
Hope you liked the Lenny pops. Yay for food on a stick!

TFP, I must tell you, the linguica sauce lasagna =FAIL. Too intense and not in a good way. Shall stick to my regular lasagna and keep the linguica for eggs or the grill! >:)
