On Saturday of the recent long weekend, we went to Claremont Showgrounds to see the Perth Adult LEGO Society display. It was a good excuse to have lunch at Claremont Quarter and eat at Grill’d Burgers – we’ve wanted to try Grill’d for ages.
It was busy and we grabbed the last free table outside. We ordered two burgers and a regular serving of hot chips to share. Our plan was to go next door afterwards to Koko Black for dessert. Burgers, chocolate and LEGO – a perfect Saturday afternoon with my sweetheart. :)
Jac ordered the Baa Baa burger (AU$12.90), with a grilled lean lamb pattie, mashed avocado, tasty cheese, salad (tomato, lettuce and thinly sliced red onion), relish and herbed mayo. You can choose a panini or “traditional” wholemeal blend bun – we both chose traditional buns. There are buns on display at the front counter to help you decide which to order (both looked really good, though – tough decision).
The lamb pattie was flavoursome and juicy. The cheese could’ve been a little more melted but Jac enjoyed this very tasty burger.
The thick-cut chips were sprinkled with salt and Grill’d’s special herb mix. Jac wasn’t so keen on the herb seasoning but I really liked it. The chips were hot and crispy and I couldn’t stop eating them.
To go with your chips you can choose herbed mayo, tomato relish or sweet chilli mayo (70 cents each). Be warned – the herbed mayo and tomato relish dipping sauces are the same as the herbed mayo/relish that are in many of the burgers. The herbed mayo was creamy and moreish but in hindsight between our burgers and the dipping sauce there was just a bit too much herbed mayo. I really should’ve chosen sweet chilli mayo. I’m not a fan of charging extra for chip dipping sauce though.
I ordered the Summer Sunset (AU$12.50), which features beef, mashed avocado, bacon, pineapple, salad, relish and herbed mayo. They forgot my pineapple but quickly fixed that when I told them it was missing.
I love pineapple in savoury dishes – pineapple on pizza, pineapple in burgers. I love to get a deep-fried battered pineapple ring along with my fish and chips. My favourite chicken pack at Chicken Treat is the Hawaiian Pack (quarter chicken, chips and pineapple fritter). How do you feel about pineapple in your burger or pizza?
Grill’d burgers are cooked to order and “Made with Love”. Their aim is to make healthy, wholesome and nutritious burgers the old-fashioned way using fresh ingredients sourced from local small family producers – this is a philosophy I wholeheartedly support!
The beef and lamb patties are made using 100% lean meat blended with herbs and Grill’d’s signature tomato relish, with no fillers like breadcrumbs and no preservatives. The chicken burgers use fresh lean chicken breast. Their veggie patties are 100% vegan and rather than a token vegetarian option, there are three veggie burgers on the menu – the Field of Dreams (AU$11.50) sounds good, even to this carnivore: grilled field mushroom, roasted peppers, basil pesto, tasty cheese, salad and yes, the herbed mayo.
The burgers don’t look very big but they were certainly satisfying. They tasted wonderfully fresh – the cos lettuce was crisp (so much better than the floppy shredded iceberg lettuce often used in burgers), the patties were meaty, juicy and delicious. The buns held together very well despite the mashed avocado, salad and generous lashings of mayo and relish – they dripped with every bite. We took bites from each other’s burger and really enjoyed our meal.
We’ll eat at Grill’d again for sure.
So, Grill’d versus Jus Burgers – who wins?
Both had flavoursome meat patties. Both used burger-strength buns. I preferred the Turkish bun of Jus; Jac preferred Grill’d’s traditional bun. I plan to try a Grill’d panini bun next time. I liked Grill’d’s chips better than Jus Burger’s chips – they were more crispy and I loved the special herb seasoning – but Jus Burger’s onion rings reign supreme. I preferred the baby cos lettuce in the Grill’d burgers. Jac still talks about Jus Burger’s fresh lemon juice.
For me, they’re both winners and I want to eat at Jus Burgers and Grill’d again. And there are other burger bars around Perth I must try. So many great burgers, so little time.

I love Grill’d! I voted no on the pineapple though, I was the child who always asked for jelly and ice cream in separate bowls…. :D
Katie,
Haha, I didn’t eat jelly and ice cream until I was a teenager on a school camp. What a revelation that was! Vanilla ice cream with lime jelly, I remember.
I had lunch at the Mount Lawley store yesterday – I love those herby chips but also feel frustrated about being charged extra for sauce when I have just spent nearly $20 on a burger and chips. I wish I had a ‘Made with Love’ tshirt for my 2 year old :) It would be great advertising for them.
Sarah-Jane,
“Made with love” would be a great slogan for kid-sized T-shirts!
Each looks delicious. And especially the chips! And I love the little bag they come in. :-) You wrote: ” I’m not a fan of charging extra for chip dipping sauce though.” Me neither. As a kid, a local McDonald’s charged 5 cents for a tub of ketchup; perhaps 2 tablespoons’ worth. I still can’t believe a charge for *ketchup*?? Just hand out packets as customers request it; that’s good quality control.
Regarding the pineapple question: On pizza, definitely! It’s not pizza without pineapple (and a friend of mine in Detroit has just uttered the word “blasphemy!” — lol). I’ve not yet tried it on a veggie burger (Morningstar or Boca); might consider it. ;-)
Cindy,
When I worked at McDonald’s we didn’t charge extra for sauces. I remember when the American sailors came to town, they absolutely loved tomato sauce/ketchup with their fries and used to go through LOADS of those little packets of Fancy Ketchup.
I’m happy to eat pizza without pineapple but I enjoy it more if it’s included.
Businesses have to pay for sauces and every other condiment. Most of us don’t charge for bags, serviettes and whatnot, but we need to recoup some money somewhere. You don’t just go to the supermarket and expect a bottle of free sauce if you buy a bag of frozen chips, now do you?
Christina,
Of course I expect businesses to recoup costs – I presume the cost of napkins, straws etc are built into the costs we pay for food and drinks.
No, I wouldn’t expect to get “free” sauce with a bag of frozen chips at the supermarket. But in a restaurant I’d prefer to get at least one dipping sauce with the chips for no extra cost – just as you wouldn’t expect to pay extra for sauce to go with a steak. The price of the steak includes the cost of a sauce. I guess it’s all about whether the sauce is an extra or part of how a restaurant wants to serve its dish. For me, I like sauce with my chips and don’t think of the sauce as an extra. Restaurants may choose to charge separately for sauce – all I was saying is I’m not a fan of that. I’m not so naive as to think “free” sauce on a restaurant menu is ultimately truly free anyway. :)
Mmmm I do love their chips ^^
Lil,
They are good…I wish I had some right now (not a very convenient craving at 8.22pm as I sit in bed yawning and typing this on my iPad)
The Baa Baa burger is my fave burger from Grill’d. And the sweet chilli dipping sauce is the bomb!!
Krissy,
So many of the burgers sounded appealing to me. I have so much more burger eating to do…
In regards to the question you asked if you prefer jus burgers or grill’d. Jus burgers wins by a long way for me.
That is not to say that grill’d don’t do a tasty burger and i do actually prefer the chips and grill’d to the ones at jus. However i go to a burger place to have a burger and to me the pattie at grill’d kind of seems ’steamed’ like fast food burgers.
As i mentioned in my jus burgers review i loved the texture of the pattie at jus and i also loved that it was served medium rare resulting in beef juices exploding when i took a bite.
Simon,
I’ll need to eat more burgers from each place before I’ll be able to form any conclusions.. :) Jac’s lamb pattie in her Ba Ba burger was pink in the middle and very juicy. I did think the Jus burgers had more of a chatty flavour. Hmm, more research is required, I think.:)
We’ve been meaning to go there too. We *nearly* went there the other day, but steak won out over burgers! Perhaps next time we’ll go for burgers!
They do look good.
As for pineapple. I love pineapple, and I love pineapple on burgers and on pizza, but I have to be in the mood. I certainly like a good burger with pine, but I also like a good burger without!
You guys and your steaks!
You’re so lucky to be trying out food the same as TFP!
I’m glad too! :-)
Craig, would love to hear what you guys think of Grill’d once you’ve tried it.
I’m always in the mood for pineapple in a burger and on pizza!
I LOVE Grill’d.
I’ve been there a couple of times in the stores around Melbourne :)
It’s just so tasty and fresh, and I love how your photos captured that.
I also love how it stacks up really high, and it’s quite fun to eat :)
The crispy cos lettuce, with the crunchy onion makes beautiful burger music!
Also, with the dripping of meat sauce/herb sauce or whatever, try dipping the chips in it. It sounds weird, but “beef juice” is so nice. I know, it sounds weird and all that, but it’s really addictive.
Also, they have free tomato sauce and some other “normal” sauces. They have that here, though. So I’d assume there would be. I absolutely adore the tomato relish :D
It’s so tasy.
Christina,
Oh yes, I relish the pleasure of wiping the plate with chips to soak up the beef juice drippings :)
Thanks, glad you think my photos captured the freshness of the burgers. That makes me feel happy!
That is one fine looking burger, with a burger strength bun to boot! The chips look tasty and are like the ones in our Red Robins chain here in Canada. The best part about those chips – they’re unlimited! Last time I went to Red Robins, my friend asked for a side of mayo to dip her chips rather than tomato sauce. I don’t think they charged her; depends on the place I guess. I like the contrast of the pineapple with savory foods, but then again being Vietnamese, all our cuisine is based on mixed flavours.
After seeing McDicks in the related links, I just remembered something. I’m not sure in your McDonalds have Angus 1/3 pounder burgers, but those are pretty good for fast food.
Jon,
Not sure about 1/3 pounders but the Angus burgers are going strong. Still Jac’s new favourite fast food chain burgers.
Unlimited chips? Oooh…
I LURRRRVEEE the graphic design work. As a former wannabe graphic designer, I am still a sucker for clean, eye-catching but effective design, especially typography. Love the catchphrase too. :) And the food looks amazing. Herbs + salt on chips? I am sold, baby.
Dea,
I wish I could’ve taken some pictures of the artwork on the interior walls too but it was just too busy for me to sneak pics without people in them. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the chips but was well and truly pleasantly surprised.
Went to grill’d on Monday up at Joondalup mainly thanks to this post since I had to get lunch somewhere up there… must say I agree they are just as good as Jus but in their own way =] Love the traditional buns, much preferred over turkish buns or for burgers IMO.
paninis
Pleased they are expanding in Perth.
Cool, Squee! I love it when people visit places after reading about them here. :)
Pineapple is as essential on pizza’s & burgers as bacon is! Nom nom nom.
As for the Grill’d vs Jus debate, Grill’d all the way, but I do have a soft spot for Flipside burgers too.
Great post… I would lean towards the Grill’d side. Huge fan of the pineapple on pizza and burgers so you ticked a big box there.
I enjoy the new(ish) Burger Bar in Leederville too. However I find it disconcerting that they do not offer avocado… *sigh*
Not a fan of Grill’d and I have had different experiences at different Jus Burgers. So I vote for Flipside as the best place for burgers. Their Blue Cheese Burger takes the cake..
