Zumborons, Manly NSW + macaron book/zine competition

After dim sum feasting at Marigold for brunch, Jac and I walk to Circular Quay where we take a ferry ride to Manly. It’s my first time visiting Manly.

At my urging upon arrival, we look for Zumbo Patisserie. We actually walk past it the first time. The recognisable black and pink “adriano zumbo” sign hanging off the grey building is modestly understated compared to the large neon-lit hot pink letters adorning the window at Zumbo’s dessert train at The Star.

Our tummies are still full from dim sum, and so three macarons (called “Zumborons” in Zumboland) seem doable. We cross the street to find a patch of lawn to sit, kick off our shoes, relax in the sunshine and eat the macarons.

It’s a beautiful day with a glorious blue sky. Manly is gorgeous.

So, the Zumborons.

First, the lime and mint mojito. We can definitely taste the lime and fresh mint. A light dusting of granulated sugar makes it a bit sparkly, a bit special.

I thought the cola macaron’s flavour was too subtle when I tried it at The Star, but Jac’s keen to try it, so we get one at Manly. Definitely too subtle. It would’ve been great to incorporate something fizzy in the cola macaron.

The raspberry caramel macaron is a winner, with chewy toffee meringue and the sweet ooze of raspberry jam when we bite.

1.5 macarons each is the perfect sweet snack. We spend a leisurely afternoon walking around Manly, checking out the shops and markets. Manly, next time I visit, I promise I’ll be hungrier.

My Sydney trip (2011)

I went to Sydney with my sister Juji and her fiancé Jay in November 2011. Jac joined us for the final weekend of the trip. See the list of posts so far, in reading order. We’re getting closer to the end of the series, but there are still a few more posts to come.

Win a macaron book and zine

This competition is open to all readers worldwide.
The winner will receive two items:

1. The book: Secrets of Macarons by José Maréchal
Murdoch Books, 2012, hardcover, 112 pages
From the back of the book:
“French chef José Maréchal discloses all the tips and techniques you need to make these little treats. First master the nine classic flavours, then create your own signature macaron.”

2. The zine: Macarons are not macaroons by Beck Vinci
2010, Collage/photocopy, 60 pages
I first saw this zine (What’s a zine?) while in Canberra back in 2010 and managed to track down a couple of copies. If you win this competition, one copy will be yours! The author writes:
“This zine is kind of like an amalgamation of the story of how macarons have irreversibly damaged my life & bank account, impressed my friends, made me seem more cultured at parties, and an instructional / cook book guide to making your own macarons and macaroons and how not to ruin your life in the process.”

The prize: Secrets of Macarons and Macarons are not macaroons

The prize: Secrets of Macarons and Macarons are not macaroons – these will be mailed to the winner
