Heirloom Tomato Upper Crust Pizza (AU$19). Left half with extra toppings for a ‘Joe special’ – potato and chorizo.

Regular readers will remember earlier this year Jac and I joined some of Perth’s food bloggers at a pizza party at Crust Gourmet Pizza in Mount Lawley, where we had great fun as pizza-chomping pizzarazzi.

Last week, Michelle and Joe, who run Crust Gourmet Pizza Mount Lawley invited Jac and me to try Crust’s new seasonal menu. The menu consists of two limited edition items: the Heirloom Tomato Upper Crust Pizza (AU$19) and Caramelised Fennel Salad (AU$12.50). While placing our order, Joe asked if we’d like any extra toppings on our pizza. He told us he’d tried it the other night with potato and chorizo, which sounded excellent – so we chose to have half as a ‘Joe special’.

The salad is made to order and consists of a delectable mix of sweet, savoury and salty, with plenty of crunch and chew – caramelised fennel slivers, shaved prosciutto, whole roasted hazelnuts, fresh pear, mixed leaves and a very fragrant South Australian blood orange-infused extra virgin olive oil dressing. Vegetarians can order it without the prosciutto, just like carnivores can order the otherwise vegetarian Heirloom Tomato pizza with extra meat toppings. The salad is quite substantial and would make a light meal on its own.

The Heirloom Tomato Upper Crust Pizza is a fancified Margherita pizza. The pizza Margherita (or “margarita” on some menus) was originally created in honour of Queen Margherita of Italy when she visited Naples in 1889 – the special pizza featured the colours of the Italian flag (green – basil; white – mozzarella; red – tomato). I don’t usually order pizza Margherita – I’m more likely to choose a less traditional pizza (purists may call abominations) – a fully loaded meatlovers with BBQ sauce; ham and pineapple with mushrooms; or lamb with garlic, feta and lashings of yoghurt-based sauce.

Crust’s Heirloom Tomato pizza features classic Italian pizza toppings: a tomato sauce base, fresh tomatoes (in this case, in-season heirloom tomatoes), a combo of three locally-made mozzarellas, smoked, buffalo and stretched, cured mozzarella, and oregano verde and a sprinkling of both dried and fresh oregano. Apart from a couple of orange ones, the tomatoes on our pizza looked like baby Roma tomatoes – I was expecting more of a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes (green, orange and black, as well as red), but these babies were gorgeously sweet and juicy.

The oregano verde is magical stuff and I wished there was more than the tiny blob per square. It’s made with pine nuts, fresh oregano, garlic, parmesan, olive oil and lemon juice. The recipe is available online – see Crust’s oregano verde recipe.

Heirloom Tomato Upper Crust Pizza (AU$19)

Heirloom Tomato Upper Crust Pizza (AU$19) – it’s relatively simple by design, but it’s one good-looking pizza.

The Heirloom Tomato pizza is currently the only vegetarian Upper Crust pizza on the menu. There are four other “regular” vegetarian pizzas on Crust’s menu. I can appreciate a good vegetarian pizza – and this one is right up there with its simplicity, bold colours and harmonious flavours – but I must admit my meat-loving tendencies mean 1) I preferred the half with chorizo on it and 2) I’d still probably choose other pizzas over the Heirloom Tomato pizza – probably the Mediterranean Lamb or Gourmet Smoked Ham and Pineapple (Crust’s version of the Hawaiian pizza has Brie on it!). It’s worth a try, though a little voice is urging me to type “with bacon!”

But potato on pizza – why don’t I have this more often? I know it’s carb on carb but when done right, adds an extra layer of toothsome pleasure. It will be tempting to add potato to my Crust pizzas from now on. As is standard, extra costs apply for extra toppings.

The left half – with potato and chorizo.

We left with full bellies and leftovers – two squares of pizza and half a salad. I claimed the pizza for breakfast and Jac took the salad to work for lunch.

Thanks, Michelle and Joe for shouting us a taste of the new seasonal menu. Perth readers, read on for the seasonal menu giveaway and info about the next weekend’s Beaufort Street Festival.
