Jac really enjoyed the sandwich bento I made for her on Friday and asked if I’d be able to make her more sandwiches for lunch on Monday. No worries! I made us both sandwiches for lunch on Friday.
- roast beef, Indian-style mango chutney, cucumber
- sausage, sour gherkin pickles, mayonnaise
- roast turkey breast, sundried tomato mustard, cos lettuce
- cheese, sweet pickles and corn relish(I enjoyed this combination so much on Friday that I wanted to eat it again. This time, I also included thinly sliced red onion in Jac’s sandwich – she loves a bit of onion in her sandwiches).
Here are our hers and hers sandwiches. The sausage I used was leftover from Sunday’s breakfast fry-up. Sharp-eyed readers may notice the sandwiches had a little bread crust left on them. I just felt like eating a little bread crust; I do once in a while. These sandwiches weren’t as dainty as the ones I made on Friday, but they were really tasty, if I do say so myself. :) I’ll probably make a sandwich and salad bento once a week.
Jac said she’d be happy with just sandwiches, but she wouldn’t mind a little salad. I chopped up some cucumber, tore up some lettuce, made carrot flowers and threw in baby roma tomatoes and sliced cooked mushrooms left over from Sunday breaky. Since I had more leftover sausage and mushroom to use up, I decided to make sausage, tomato, mushroom and lettuce skewers – one for Jac and two for me.
My lunch was pretty much the same as Jac’s, but with a slightly larger serving of vegies, and of course, snow pea sprouts.
I’m sure you’ve all noticed since I got into the bento thing I’ve really increased my vegetable intake – especially fresh vegies. I’m really enjoying it.

All of Jacs hardwork of trying to get you to eat vegetables, like hiding them in meatballs, bulking up pasta sauce with it etc etc. When all it needed was cute bento boxes, and you would do it all yourself! lol

“Here are our hers and hers sandwiches”
This is the cutest sentence to read on a Sunday night just before bed! :-D

I admire your eating vegetables. I hardly can swallow cooked veggies, let alone a fresh one. I could only eat fresh lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, and that’s it. So salad is not popular with me. But I’m trying to get myself like them and eat them more. For me, veggies must be accompanied with something fried. I guess I never managed to get out of my childhood habit!

Heya, how do you keep your sandwiches from going soggy? i always seem to have that problem…

Fresh veggies are so, so good. Tasty AND healthy IS good! :D I must admit I like looking at salads because they’re so colourful and so pretty. It makes eating them a lot more appealing.

Hi Food Pornographer and thanks for a terrific blog which my partner and I are enjoying very much! you do have a way with food ;-)
one question: do the bento boxes leak? we have had a hard time trying to find any kinda lunch box type item that won’t leak salad dressing or sauce all over the place when carried in your work bag. i know they come with their own bag usually but sometimes you just want to carry lunch in your work bag!
thanks muchly and keep up the great blogs :-)

hi, love your little notes that you attached together with the food that you prepared for jac. but just wondering won’t the paper become soggy after a while? i love to put love notes in my daughters food container but i can only selectively do so with dried food. any further advice to share ?

sormuijai,
Heheh, yeah, pretty funny eh? I still love my meat and fatty junky fried foods, but I feel good for eating lots more of the healthy stuff.
Jess,
Aww shucks! :)
bella,
I often do prefer fresh vegies to cooked ones, which is good, as it’s quick and easy to pack them into the bento box. I used to hate eating vegies too – but as I’ve gotten older my tastes seem to be changing (for the better, it seems!). I love vegies with something meaty and fried… but I’m trying to eat healthier meals so I’ve cut down on the fried stuff too.
karmalee,
I’ll post my tips for less soggy sandwiches soon. :)
dea,
I love colourful food. My salads are probably very boring as they are simple and often un-dressed, but I’ve really been enjoying the freshness and the colour.
Hi anne,
Glad you guys like it!
I’m planning to post some of my reflections on bento, now that I’ve been doing it for a couple of weeks, including the issue of leakage. Stay tuned!
Hi beauty mom,
I make sure to pack the notes in with the drier items. I have on occasion placed the note in a piece of grease-proof paper, which I’ve folded over the note to protect it. But generally speaking I usually have a food item that’s not too wet in the lunch box, so it’s easy enough to pop the note in with that. The other thing I have also done is stuck the note on top of her lunch box. :)

averil,
Thanks for the link!
Now you’ve given me ideas for the “functional” lunch box note! LOL. Just kidding. I’ll stick to soppy romantic notes as far as possible. :)

I knew those sausages would be back… mmm love the idea of a sandwich multi-pak!

Bryan,
Oh yes, I spotted their bento potential the minute I saw them. :) A sandwich multi-pak’s the only way I like them. I get bored if I just have one big sandwich.
