Perth Malaysian restaurants

I get asked about Malaysian restaurants in Perth quite regularly. I don’t claim to know every Malaysian restaurant in Perth (far from it!) and this is not intended to be comprehensive or complete – but hopefully you’ll find some delicious Malaysian eats among the places listed (in alphabetical order by suburb).

Links are included if I’ve written a blog post/posts on a restaurant.

Bentley – Wong’s Hawker Food (The Bentley Centre shopping centre)
Haven’t dined in yet but Wong’s is one of our regular takeaway places. The nasi lemak and Hainanese chicken rice are favourites we order time and time again.

Bull Creek – Bull Creek Hawker (Parry Avenue shopping village)
Extremely popular on weekends – go early or be prepared to queue.
Dishes to try: chicken rice, laksa, loh bak (five spice pork roll).

East Perth – Munch Terrace
Go early on Fridays for their nasi lemak lunch special. If you like deep-fried chicken, the crispy chicken rice is a good choice. One of the sauciest Hokkien mees I’ve come across in Perth! They do a good curry laksa too.

Loh bak, Bull Creek Hawker, Bull Creek   Ais kacang, Suria Cafe, Girrawheen   Hainanese chicken rice, Tak Chee House, Northbridge

Girrawheen – Suria Cafe (Summerfield Shopping Centre)
Dishes to try: nasi lemak, satay, nasi biryani (weekend special). Housemade Malaysian kuih are available on Saturdays – but get in quick, especially when there’s apom balik (peanut pancakes). Check Suria’s Facebook page for updates on the coming weekend’s specials.

Murdoch University – Wok Inn
Located on the uni campus in the Refectory. Hainanese chicken rice (one of my favourite Perth chicken rice), char kway teow and curry laksa. I ate many meals here while I was a student and recent reports suggest it’s still good!

Northbridge – Hawker’s Cuisine
Especially busy at dinner time. My favourites include sambal kangkung and Marmite chicken.
The menu features dishes you don’t usually find on menus in Malaysian restaurants in Perth, such as kerabu chicken and Sarawak pork belly.

Northbridge – Amore Gelato
They make and sell durian gelato! It’s not in the main gelato display but there’s a sign on the counter. The durian gelato is stored out the back away from the other gelato flavours. It’s got a strong durian aroma and flavour and will satisfy your durian cravings for sure. Tell all your durian-loving friends so it remains popular and they keep on making it.

Northbridge – Penang Foods restaurant
One of my favourite places for curry laksa.

Northbridge – Tak Chee House
One of the frontrunners for best Hainanese chicken rice in Perth.

Thornlie – Kitchen Inn Cafe (Thornlie Square shopping centre)
A new kid on the block. Some teething problems reported. Very crowded at dinner time.
Dishes to try: kampua mee (a specialty from Sibu, Sarawak), Port Klang bak kut teh and Sarawak laksa (different to the usual curry-based laksa so many places serve).

Thornlie – Spencer Village food court (closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but open on public holidays)
This food court copped bad publicity a year or so ago when it was dubbed “food hall from hell” an article by the Perth Sunday Times due to its hygiene breaches. We’ve eaten there for years with no ill-effects. If you’re still interested:

  • my favourite stall is Fook Kee (which hasn’t failed a hygiene inspection) – they sell chai tow kway, chee cheong fun, popiah, loh bak, yong tow foo, glutinous chicken rice and sweet and savoury Chinese steamed buns.
  • Penang Cuisine is another popular stall, for hawker favourites including chicken rice, hokkien mee, fried beehoon, char kway teow and more.
  • Other Malaysian stalls include KL Foods (where you can get KL-style hokkien mee – very black with thick stubby noodles) and Straits Cuisine, where you can get claypot chicken rice.
  • The drinks stall has canned favourites like root beer and Sarsi, and you can get cendol, ais kacang, ais soda gembira, teh tarik and kopi tarik and durian smoothie!
  • Hainanese chicken rice and A&W root beer, popiah, yong tow foo
  • Popiah, chai tow kway, fried bee hoon, glutinous chicken rice, char siew pow

Marmite chicken, Old Cathay, Victoria Park   Cendol, Taurus Hawker Foods, Willetton   Port Klang Bak Kut Teh, Kitchen Inn Cafe, Thornlie

Victoria Park – Old Cathay

  • At lunch time, you can get hawker dishes including nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, char skew wantan mee and laksa.
  • At dinner time, you can still get Malaysian favourites like Marmite chicken, long beans sambal, assam king prawns and eggplant, pork and salted fish claypot.
  • The menu is mostly Chinese-Malaysian.
  • The jackfruit and coconut ice creams are great for dessert – pandan is available but not particularly strong in flavour.

Victoria Park, East – Rasa Nyonya Penang
Hawker rice and noodle dishes. Roti canai with curry. A good range of Malaysian hot and cold drinks.

Willetton – Taurus Hawker Foods
Hawker favourites. Warning – the “large” servings are very large indeed – best for sharing or doggy bags. Long tables with bench seats, cafeteria style.
In the same complex as Taurus – a restaurant called Bamboo. Similar menu, table service (I haven’t been there though – we always seem to stop at Taurus!)

Please don’t feel outraged if I appear to have missed your favourite Malaysian restaurant. As I’ve said, this isn’t intended to be a comprehensive guide, nor do I claim to know all of Perth’s Malaysian restaurants. If you know of any great Malaysian restaurants in Perth I should try, feel free to leave a comment and tell me about them. I’ll keep updating this page with more info.

How about Mahsuri in Vic Park? They do great sate and murtabak. They also have a delicious turmeric chicken salad whose name I’ve forgotten.

Thanks for the list. I’m always on the lookout for food from the old country :)
The Curry Fish Head at Penang Food is good. The owner used to run Sommerville.

Bamboo serves pretty tasty dishes if you order rice. Their hawker food could be better, even though they were the original owners of Taurus. Nice ambience.

Dear TFP,

I believe this list should also include Perth’s Malaysian food at Cambridge Forum Food Court in Wembley although it is not a technically restaurant per se.

Specifically, the char kway teow, chai tow kway (Malaysian and not Singaporean style as they do both), sambal mee-hoon goreng and Cantonese style egg noodles from the Malaysian stall are pretty awesome. In my opinion, the char kway teow is arguably the best I have tasted in Australia.

Thank’s for this awesome list. When you have a chance, check out Noodle Inn in West Perth. Not the Harbour Town one, the one next to ANZ on Hay st. Their laksa is my fav and their Chicken curry is very popular too. Everything else is so so. Thanks again.
