Roasted pork belly, Chinese New Year 2012

Happy New Year! Kong Hei Fatt Choy!
We get together for our family reunion lunch at my parents’ home on Chinese New Year eve.
We begin the meal with yee sang, a raw fish salad (in Chinese, “yee” means fish, “sang” means raw). Yee sang is eaten by many Chinese Malaysian families at new year as ...

Green chicken curry, Chat Thai Thaitown, Haymarket, Sydney

We’ve been warned about the legendary dinner queue at Chat Thai. A couple of Sydney locals even suggest turning up for dinner well after 10pm.
For me, two things come to mind.
First, in Perth at 10pm, many kitchens are closed, if not the restaurants. I remember on my graduation night on a Wednesday, how ...

Top Spot food court, Kuching

After a brief rest and shower, I take this photograph from the window near the lifts near my room on the 16th floor. Our group meets in the hotel lobby and then we’re off on a walk along the Kuching Waterfront. Dinner time approaches.

Another view of Kuching from another hotel window

The Chairman and Yip, Civic, Canberra

Vanilla panna cotta with passionfruit sauce

Restaurant review. Fusion cuisine with silver service. The chef’s tasting menu was a glutton’s delight featuring seafood, pork, beef, mushrooms and the delicious signature duck and shitake pancakes. Exquisite desserts. Highly recommended.

Havana Restaurant and Bar, East Perth

27 August 2010
Marsala veal porterhouse from Havana, East Perth

The food at Havana is not OMG expensive, but it’s definitely not cheap. We enjoyed garlic prawns, marsala veal porterhouse, a chargrilled marinated half chicken and house-made desserts. The tiramisu didn’t fully satisfy, but the banana crepe with chocolate sauce was delightful.

Alpine Restaurant, Carlisle

Authentic wiener schnitzel, Alpine Restaurant, Carlisle

Restaurant review – delicious German/Austrian food (magnificent authentic wiener schnitzel and chips!) spoiled by extremely slow service. So slow, in fact, that we left without ordering dessert, fearful it would take another hour to get to our table. We just couldn’t bear more waiting. That was the theme of the evening – waiting, waiting, waiting.

Portorosa Cafe, Fremantle

28 April 2010
Scotch filet steak with prawns and creamy garlic sauce

Restaurant review – unfortunately, the most memorable aspects of our meal were negative: the inedible garlic bread rusks we were served; the steak placed on chips; how we almost didn’t even eat at Portorosa. But I did enjoy my garlic prawns.
